 CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

A. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This days people are really prone to diseases just by simply touching a dirty thing, and
commonly our hands are particularly one of the suspects on why we usually has germs in our body
that sometimes causes us to be ill, that’s why our group decided to make an Aloe Vera Sanitizer.
Aloe Vera gel has alleged to be useful for dry skin conditions, cosmetic ailments, hair and scalp
problems and many more. First we scrape the gel out of the Aloe Vera so that our sanitizer would
be sticky .We used Alcohol, Aloe Vera Gel, and essential oil to make up to that sanitizer. We
mixed all the materials and then after that we stirred it and come up to a Aloe Vera Hand Sanitizer.
Aloe Vera Hand Sanitizer helps us to kill germs and bacteria’s in our hands. Aloe Vera Hand
Sanitizer will help us stay our hands clean and far from diseases that can harm us and lead us to
serious problems or even death. Even if in our study we haven’t conduct evidences yet from Aloe
Vera Sanitizer as a effective way to kill germs, but its also for the satisfactory of every person who
use the sanitizer.

B. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Can aloe vera be used as a hand sanitizer?

Sub- Problems

-Can homemade hand sanitizer can make our hands fresh and clean?
-What subtances present in homemade hand sanitizer to kill germs?
-Do homemade hand sanitizer is essential for our hands?

Hypothesis:
Ho : Instant aloe vera hand sanitizer does not kill a significant amount of bacteria and other
microorganisms. Many people use instant hand sanitizer to kill bacteria on their hands and a
satisfactory of every user

Ha : Instant aloe vera hand sanitizer does kill a significant amount of bacteria and other
microorganisms.
C.SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study will be of significance to the following:

Students: The Aloe Vera hand sanitizer will protect the student’s hands from bacteria.Also , the
hand sanitizer will clean the student’s hand and will give a good smell or scent or even make
them feel satisfied and comfortable

Future Researchers : The future researchers

D.SCOPE AND LIMITATION

It talks about the effectiveness of homemade hand sanitizer. The researchers are going to make a
homemade hand sanitizer so that the people will also prevent disease. This study is all about
environment, community, the student, and the people, but in our research we focus more on
students in the University of the Visayas.

The study will use homemade hand sanitizer as hand sanitizer. Because the researchers
want to help the students to make them feel satisfactory through sanitizing.

They will help by making an homemade hand sanitizer in it. This study can help the
environment to decrease infections in simple ways through sanitizing.
 CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

This section contains the review of related literature and studies. This includes the properties of
aloe vera ,benefits of aloe vera , other uses of aloe vera and the history of aloe vera. In addition,
it also includes theoretical framework and operational definition of terms.

Aloe vera properties make them very versatile. When ingested, they are incredibly soothing,
loaded with antioxidants, and offer countless other health benefits. Of course, the various species
of aloe will be composed of different compounds and properties. Even the inner and outer parts
of aloe leaves contain different properties. The biggest between most of them is typically the
amount and density of minerals, vitamins, and nutrients (Dr. Edward, 2016). In addition, aloe
vera properties includes Anti-Pruritic Properties and Healing Properties.

Scientific name: Aloe Barbadensis/ Vera
Family name: Liliaceae

The Aloe vera plant has been known and used for centuries for its health, beauty, medicinal and
skin care properties. The name Aloe vera derives from the Arabic word “Alloeh” meaning
“shining bitter substance,” while “vera” in Latin means “true.” 2000 years ago, the Greek
scientists regarded Aloe vera as the universal panacea. The Egyptians called Aloe “the plant of
immortality.” Today, the Aloe vera plant has been used for various purposes in dermatology.
 CHAPTER III

Research Methodology

3.1 Ingredients

The active ingredient in this hand sanitizer recipe is the alcohol, which needs to comprise at least
60% of the product in order to be an effective disinfectant.

• astringent
• moisturizer
• emollient

Ingredients

• Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) or ethanol

• Pure Aloe Vera gel
Vitamin E Oil
Tea Tree Oil
Aloe Vera Essential Oil (for scent)

3.2 Materials(consider ones that have additional anti-sceptic properties)

• bowl
• spatula
• funnel
• plastic bottle with pump or squirt top (cleaned)

3.3 Procedure

First we prepared the materials that are needed.

* Next we cut the aloe vera in to half and after that we scrubbed the gel of it and put it in a
container.

* After that we mixed the following: Alcohol, Aloe Vera Gel, Vitamin E Oil, Tea Tree Oil and
Aloe Vera Essential Oil for the scent.

* And lastly after mixing it we put it to a container

 CHAPTER IV

Results and Findings

At first we attempt to make an extraordinary essential oil made out of Aloe Vera. But, what
happened is our product is also good as a sanitizer and moisturizer so we reserched and proved
that it is also appropriate to use aloe vera as a hand sanitizer since personal hygiene should be
one of the most practiced and observed activity of every person.By having a good hygiene, you
can stop infection and can also eliminate germs. The result of the project revealed that Aloe Vera
is not only good for making hand sanitizers but also for many ways.The hand sanitizer made
from aloe Vera is a great project, other than using natural or organic materials this is also an easy
project to make and also this project promotes proper hygiene by producing an organic sanitizer
that would be more affordable and safer to everyone.
 CHAPTER V

Conclusions and Recommendations

Although, many scientific and professional research proclaim that hand sanitizers do in fact
prevent the spread of diseases, it is still an alternative for the MOST EFFICIENT WAY to
prevent spreading of diseases; HAND WASHING WITH SOAP AND WATER.

Although hand sanitizers do a great job of preventing the transmission of diseases, soap and
water is the best way to eliminate all forms of infectious bacteria. It is a safe, effective,
beneficial and overall chemical-free way of stopping transmission of diseases. It has a minimal
amount of disadvantages and still proves to be one of the best methods.

However, soap and water are not always available. This is where hand sanitizers come into play.
Hand sanitizers are the best alternative and they prevent the spreading of diseases almost as
good as hand washing through soap and water. Many hand sanitizer companies may claim more
than it actually offers, nonetheless, hand sanitizers work and complete its job effectively. Yes it
may have some negative aspects, but overall it is a good substance to use after exposed to
infectious areas like the hospitals and washrooms. The pros definitely outweigh the cons and its
a great daily use item, when we are not always near soap and water.

It is important to use the right sanitizer in the proper way. Alcohol-containing hand sanitizers
are the most effective, and it must be used in a dime sized amount, spreading it all over your
hands, between your fingers and covering all surface area. This is the only way in which, hand
sanitizers will fully complete its job and prevent the spread of diseases.

Why make our own hand sanitizer?

Some commercial hand sanitizers contain ingredients as scary as the germs they protect you
from, so why not make your own hand sanitizer from ingredients you select? You'll save money,
protect yourself from germs, and can customize the scent of the hand sanitizer so it doesn't smell
medicinal. We'll make a cheaper and more convenient product that could help a lot in a
community.
