Leadership Psychology

My name is Lauryn White and over the past semester I have grown as a leader and

rounded out my style of leadership. Through my experiential leadership internship, I have

gained the necessary leadership skills that will help me with my future dreams of become a

high school field hockey coach.

During an activity that I preformed I was able to model the way for my teammates by

giving a quick speech before my activity. My speech outlined what I was going to do, why it was

important, and how it will benefit us. Through becoming a leader on my team, I was able to

gain the skills of effective communication. Coaches need to know how to effectively

communicate to their team to become a successful team.

Each and every one of my teammates and I share the same vision. The vision of having a

successful season. The thing that dives that vision is our passion for the sport. I chose to do my

internship with the field hockey team because I knew that everyone on that team was as

passionate about the sport as I am. As a coach I will electrify my passion for the sport to my

future team, in hopes that they will gain the same passion that I have.

My coach has told us time and time again that we need to work on building our

confidence. I made that happen by preforming an activity that was designed to help build my

teammates confidence. I was able to take what my coach said and put it into action by finding

an activity built around getting peoples insecurities out. On a team, once people feel free to be

themselves without judgement, they gain confidence and the team begins to do better on and
off the field. As I go into coaching later on, my main focus will be to build my teams confidence,

I have effectively learned how to do this which is probably the most important skill to have as a

coach.

My next goal was to create a climate of trust through my team. In my activity they had

to write down things that they were insecure about. I knew that this would make people feel

unconfutable if they had to put their names down, so I made them amanous and had them

placed in a bucket before they were read by different people. That way no one knew who

wrote what. I have also, creating relationships with girls on the team before preforming the

activity. As a coach I will create relationships with my girls and make each feel like they are

wanted on the team. I will get my teams trust and respect through what I learned through my

internship.

I expect the best out of each and every girl on my team currently and will expect the

best out of my girls when I become a coach. Through my qualities of loyalty, kindness, and

open-mindedness, I will be able to encourage the hearts of my team. Most think that every

coach need to be tough on their team, but in reality, people just need someone who they can

respect and lean on. I am that person for my team now and will be for my future team.
