Problem 1 – (20 points)

Identify the type of each Op Amp circuit. Write the letter that best describes it next to each circuit:

a. Inverting Amplifier d. Difference Amplifier

b. Non-Inverting Amplifier e. Comparator

1C1A Circuit Type:____________

Note that the input signal is created from the

phototransistor and located at the wire above the
phototransistor. The 12 V is only acting as a
power supply and NOT an input signal.

Circuit Type:____________
Problem 2 – (10 points)

Design an op amp circuit to give an output voltage .

(a) Sketch your circuit and give values for each resistor. SHOW YOUR WORK.
(b) If the power supply for the op amp is , and ranges from -2V to +2V, does the op amp
saturate at any time?
Problem 3 – (35 points)

(a) Find Hint: One good way to do this is to take a Thevenin Equivalent. Also assume IDEAL op amp
model.
(b) If A=10(the internal gain of the op amp), does this affect the output value? Explain.
(c) Assuming an ideal op amp, if a resistor, , is placed between the output node and
ground, does the value found in (a) change? If so, how? Explain.
Problem 4 – (35 points)

Design a system that uses op amps to:

 Calculate where and are input signals.

 Output where
o if
o if
o if
 Use any combination of voltage and current dividers, inverting and non-inverting amplifiers and summers,
differencing (subtracting) amplifiers, op amp switches, voltage followers, etc.
 Assume the power supply for the op amp is . You also can use a 5V power supply in the design.

(a) Explain in words, “Blocks”, or using the system design side of the cards handed out in class a high level
explanation of how your circuit works.
(b) Draw the CIRCUIT DIAGRAM (the op amps, resistors, etc.) and how they connect to each other. Make
sure to specify the values of all resistors, etc. for your design.
