Description:
Theoretical • Lathe removes undesired material from a rotating work piece in the form of
Background: chips with the help of a tool which is traversed across the work and can be fed
deep in work.
• The tool material should be harder than the work piece and the later help
securely and rigidly on the machine.
• The tool may be given linear motion in any direction.
Taper turning attachment
• Taper Turning Attachment is very much popular and fits on all lathe machine.
In ordinary straight turning, the cutting tool moves along a line parallel to the
axis of the work, causing the finished job to be the same diameter throughout.
• When the diameter of a piece changes uniformly, from one end to the other,
the piece is said to be tapered. Taper turning as a machining operation is the
gradual reduction in diameter from one part of a cylindrical work piece to
another part. Tapers can be either external or internal. If a work piece is tapered
on the outside, it has an external taper ,if it is tapered on the inside, it has an
internal taper.
• In this method by using bottom plate or bracket, a taper turning attachment is
attached to the rear end of the bed. It has a guide bar which is usually pivoted
as its center. The guide bar has the ability to swing and it can be set in any
required angle. It has graduations in degrees. On either side, the guide bar can
be swiveled to a maximum angle of 10°. It has a guide block which connects
to the rear end of the cross slide and it moves on the guide bar. The binder
screw is removed, before connecting the cross slide, hence the cross slide is
free from the cross slide screw.
• Usually during taper turning, the job will be held in the chucks or in the centers.
To the required angle the guide bar turned.
• The angle is calculated using the formula, tanα = (D-d)/2l
• When the division is given in mm instead of degree, then the angular distance
of the guide bar to be tilted is given by Using the compound rest hand wheel
the depth of cut will be given.
• At an half taper angle the guide will be set. Using this method any taper turning
method can be done
Taper Turning Attachment Advantages:
• Fast and consistent accuracy up to 300 mm Taper Turning job.
• It’s useful in threading on work piece inside as well as outside.
• Any length of work piece can be tuned.
• At set position accessory can be left.
• With taper turning we can easily do narrow boring.
Calculation of taper angle:
Where d=25mm
L=300mm
D=32mm
Tan A/2= D-d/2L
PUTTING VALAUS
Tan A/2= 32-25/2(300)
We get >>>>A=1.33 degree

Procedure: • The work piece is fixed in a 3 jaws chuck with sufficient overhang losing and
tightening using chuck key
• Adjust the machine to run the job to required cutting speed.
• Fix the cutting tool (point tool) in the tool post using tool post key and centering
operation is performed so that the axis of the job coincides with the lathe axis.
• Facing is performed by giving longitudinal depth of cut and cross feed.
• Performing the turning operation until the diameter of work piece become 32
mm by using Vernier caliper
• Then facing operation perform until the length of the work piece become
300mm by using Vernier caliper
• Now set the taper angle 1.33 degree using taper attachment having calibrating
scale
• Once we set the angle tight the nut of taper attachment by spanner so that it do
not move during operation
• After that we disengaged the compound slide wheel so that the compound slide
do not move during and do not disturb the taper angle
• Now we adjust the tool so that it touch the work piece by using cross slide
wheel of interest depth
• Now again start the lathe machine of required cutting speed
• Move the carriage gradually by carriage wheel so the tool cut the work piece
• The process perform until the small dia become 25mm by using Vernier caliper
• So we get our required taper shape of work piece

Results : • We get the taper shape of the given work piece the shape shown calculation
of an angle.
Precautions: • Before starting the spindle by power, lathe spindle should be revolved by one
revolution by hand to make it sure that no fouling is there.
• Tool should be properly ground, fixed at correct height and properly secured,
and work also be firmly secured.
• Chips should not be allowed to wind around a revolving job and cleared as
often as possible.
• Apply cutting fluids to the tool and work piece property.
• No attempt should be made to clean the revolving job with cotton waste.
• On hearing unusual noise, machine should be stopped.
