English 102
12 December 2019
“Be better,” to words of advice that I had been given in High School. I've always had self
doubt in myself. This advice applies to everything, an essay, school work, and overall life. These
two words have helped me push forward, we can always do and be better. With the help of
English 102, it helped get better and improve my writing. What is true for all writers is that their
writing can always improve. For me, it is hard to figure out what is wrong with my essay on my
own. Although I still have a long way to go; I’ve learned of writing areas that needed
strengthening, gotten tools from assignments, and skills that will help me in my future classes.
We all have our weaknesses, and it's hard to identify them on our own. The weaknesses
that I have learned is that I am afraid to use commas, or rather I was not using them properly.
Something so simple, but yet so frustrating to me. I learned to use a comma after an
introductory word, or a word group, and to set off or separate nonessential words or phrases. I’ve
also learned comma don’ts, like not to use a comma to connect two main sentences, or don’t add
a comma after “such as” or “like” or “although.” Then there is the use of commas with the
anagram of F.A.N.B.O.Y.S. Along with really diving in deeper in the organization, and how
moving around paragraphs really improves essays. For example, I never would have thought to
put the counter-argument as the first paragraph. I ended up really liking how it looked, and how

the following paragraphs would end up debunking the argument. Two helpful tools that will help
Assignments aren't just assignments, they are also tools. Before taking English 102, I
was naive and did not realize I could improve beyond the typical five-paragraph essay. Using the
three-story thesis I know that I would be able to write a five-page essay with no problem, I feel
like I could even write a ten-page essay if I really had to. I give thanks to those reading for
giving me more knowledge and tips that help writing feel easier.
The tools that I have learned will help me in the long run. These skills that I have learned
aren’t just used in an English102 class, but also in other future writing courses. These tools are
here to stay in the long run. These are the tools that I wish I had when I wrote my senior research
paper. A tool that I found great value in identifying the deeper meaning behind characters in
novels and acknowledging how they all connect with each other. It is easy to identify the
meaning in each character but it is difficult to understand how they all connect with each other,
In class, we read the monster novel, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. I found this novel to be a fun
read and very different from what I remember reading as a kid. It was refreshing to have an
psychoanalytic lens in our essay. Overall these are the tool I will carry with me.
I am extremely thankful for this class. It has helped me grow more confident in my
writing. Which has, therefore, helped me grow as both a student and a person. Helping me make
improvements in my strong writing areas, and making my weak areas just as strong. Taking
lessons from assignments and being able to apply them to both my near future and my far future.

I will forever be grateful for this class and the Puente Program for helping and guiding me to
