CHAPTER 1

PRELIMINARY

1. Background

If you are studying English in high school, school or further education institutions, you are
joined by one billion other people around the world who are engaged in the same pursuit.
However, because you are trying to memorize proper grammar, and trying to avoid common
mistakes for English-speaking students, you might be wondering why you can learn English in
the first place.

Language plays an important role in human life. One by one, try and use language as a
communication tool, and at the same time as a symbol of social support. By using language, a
person can make statements, convey facts and knowledge, explain or report something, and
discuss social relations between language users. This shows that by using language, people can
activate their ideas, feelings, etc. information through communication.In developing countries
such as Indonesia, Britain has a vital role in all aspects of life, especially in science and
technology. In addition, it can be used to develop relationships in international forums, to read
English books (especially for students from elementary schools to colleges / universities), to
strengthen relationships between nations in the world, etc. As students, we learn English intended
to obtain a variety of knowledge, to understand and comprehend textbooks learning in English,
to gain knowledge and skills, and be ready to enter university, as one of the test requirements for
senior high school students, etc. Seeing the important role above English , that is why English is
very important to understand and master by everyone around the world since the previous year.

As a global or universal language, English not only allows us to communicate and interact with
everyone around the world, but also can change our lives for the better. In addition, we must also
realize that western countries play an extraordinary role in developing and maintaining science
and technology. So, if we want to be skilled scientists, linguists, and able to compete with other
countries in the world, we must understand, master and learn the language they use, namely
English.Finally, if you study English at school, college or university, remember that getting an 'A'
in English is almost worthless, in terms of communication, if you can't speak the language.
Delivered English is used in the best careers, the best universities, and increasingly used in job
interviews. So like it or not, English is a very important language for learning how to speak.

English is spoken as the first language by around 375 million, as a second language by many
people and as a foreign language by around 750 million. It has official or special status in at least
70 countries and is being studied by around one billion people. These numbers alone make
English important for learning.
Tourism, major tourist destinations such as the United States, United Kingdom and Australia all
use English as their primary language. In addition, even non-speaking English countries often
offer tourist services in English.

Media, Mostly, film music in the world and books in English. You can experience this media
first hand without getting imperfect translations on the road.

Internet, Knowing the language facilitates the use of the World Wide Web because most of the
world's information is stored and web pages are in English.

Business, When a Japanese manager, a Mexican producer and a French customer meet at an
international location, they communicate in English, because it has become the world language
for business.

DISCUSSION

1. Importance of English

There is no denying the importance of English at this time as a global language. It is clear that
English has become more dominant throughout the world. In some countries it is used as a
mother tongue and other countries learn as a second language in their schools. This makes
English widespread. In addition, many reasons contribute to the increasing spread of English. For
example, using it for communication between people all over the world, and also, it is the
language of modern times. On the other hand, English is the language of science and technology.

There is no doubt that, English is the language of communication between people from different
cultures. It is also a computer language that helps to communicate with people all over the world
through internet and e-mail technology. People who know English can deal with the internet,
which considers information and the communication revolution. And also one of the reasons that
contributed to the spread of English, is the language of the modern era. Where people use it in
various fields of life such as economics, e-commerce medicine, and aviation. In addition, it is a
language used in tourism and travel. This is the reason for people to learn English.

One of the main reasons why English is dominant at the moment is using it in education with
universities and institutes and, they use it in scientific research. This has become an addendum
on the ownership of scientific individual shares. On the other hand, the United Kingdom is an
important requirement in most government and private employment.It is quite clear that English
has become a necessity today. We need it in various fields of life. English has become easier to
learn more than ever before with the availability of various resources to help people learn very
easily. Like the Internet, books and educational institutions spread all over the world. This goal is
worth requiring using English. Everything will be easier for you, and you will be able to achieve
more than what you want to achieve, if you speak English well. Much of your success in the US
will depend on your ability to communicate with people in English. There will be times when
you need to know how to use a machine, get information about getting a job, or convince others
of your ideas. To reach your destination you need English. Students continue to share ideas and
information in informal conversations. If you lose this conversation, your chances for
professional and personal success will be limited compared to your peers.

2. How to Improve English

Here are some simple ways for anyone who is interested in improving their English. I myself try
to improve in this language every day. There is always so much to learn and it can be really fun!
You just need to have passion and enthusiasm to be more alone.
This is what most people would suggest: read. Read anything in English. You can read story
books, newspapers, magazines, blogs, comics, English textbooks, instructions and materials on
food packages, advertisements, etc. For story books, don't force yourself to read something that
is too difficult or something that you know you won't enjoy. Make reading fun! Read the book
that you ENJOY read. I like reading books that are boring me too.Watch movies with English
subtitles. This will be your favorite way of learning English. Not only can you have a fun time
watching movies, you will learn new words at the same time and know how to pronounce them!
Usually, you can get movies with English subtitles on DVD.

Listen to English songs. Read the lyrics when you listen to a song. Listen to your favorite songs
and sing with them.

Start a blog in English. This is one way for you to practice your writing. Blog on something you
like. If you are a fan of films, create a blog and write about your favorite films, your favorite
characters, what you think can be improved in films, what films are new to expect next year, etc.
Besides blogging, try joining online forums, chatting online. and much more.

If you don't want to maintain a blog, why not write to a pen pal? It would be more fun to have
pen pals from different countries! You use to write for others from Yugoslavia, US, Germany,
Mexico, and even. I remember feeling happy when I saw letters with foreign stamps in my
mailbox. If you don't want to spend too much money on stamps, then get a local pen pal.

Write in your diary / journal in English. This is where you can write anything in it. But if you
write something you don't want others to read, make sure you hide it somewhere safe! Or try not
to write anything offensively in case someone finds it. You can also write about neutral things
like the places you went that day, what you ate, who you met, what you did, etc.

Be friends with a good English dictionary. You can use Oxford, Collins, Cambridge, etc. Buy a
dictionary that you feel comfortable with and USE it at any time. Stay by your side when you
read. I always put my favorite Oxford dictionary beside me when I'm reading. So when I stumble
upon a word I don't know, I don't need to get up and look around for it. That's right by my side.
So, I have no reason not to look up words!

8. Speak the language whenever you can. Talk with friends and family. You can also sing
together for English songs! Try karaoke! Don't be shy to try to speak the language. Don't be
afraid that other people will tease you. In fact, they will admire the love for courage and self-
confidence.

Learn new words every day. Keep your own vocabulary notebook and write new words and
meanings on a daily basis. Look as often as possible so that new words will stick to your head.

CONCLUSION

English is a world language and is also widely used language on the internet. Almost every
language book has been translated into English. So it's easy to get world information if you know
English.

English is important to me because English is an international language. We must prepare

ourselves to face the era of globalization. Today, many companies are recruiting their employees
with proficiency tests in English. We can get more and more information on the Internet, but
80% information on the Internet uses English. I've heard that intelligent people are people who
can use certain languages.

People must know several languages, at least they can use two languages, the National language
and the International language. National languages are for communication for fellow nations and
international languages for communication to people from other countries. Regional languages
are important for communicating with people from the same region, but at this time we rarely
use regional languages.
