My nursing philosophy encompasses compassion, accountability, and advocacy. I strive

to be a nurse who embodies these qualities. I will be expanding on my definition of these traits in

relation to these domains: Nursing, Environment, Health, and Person.

Nursing

Nursing is considered by many to be an honorable profession. To me, it is an honorable

profession because nurses act with compassion, practice with accountability and serve as

advocates when taking care of their patients. A nurse shows compassion when a patient is unkind

because he is frustrated and angry while dealing with a difficult diagnosis. In nursing,

accountability is of utmost importance. Nurses must ensure that they administer the correct

medications and document accurately and truthfully. Nurses are sometimes the middle person

between the patient and the doctor. As mediators, they must ensure that the patient’s wishes are

being carried out and that the doctors are prescribing the correct treatment.

Environment

A nurse's environment is where they carry out their duties as well as where their patients

require care. In the hospital, nurses should be held accountable for the cleanliness of the rooms in

which they work, their work stations and the immediate surroundings of their patients. In the

community, nurses can serve as advocates for their patients by reporting communicable diseases.

A nurse's work environment can also be the patients that surround her. A nurse can show

compassion for a patient and their family who don’t speak English and are confused about

treatment.

Health

Promotion and maintenance of good health is the goal of any practitioner. As nurses, we

must show compassion for a patient showing mental distress. We must also remain accountable

for teaching patients about their diagnosis and how to maintain good health. A nurse should

advocate for the health of our patients by ensuring the proper treatment is given.

Person

In nursing, burnout is a common occurrence, therefore we must also have compassion for

ourselves when we become frustrated or tired. Nurses should remain accountable for giving

ourselves a break and taking care of our mental well-being. As any worker should, we must

advocate for ourselves in the workplace when it comes to misunderstandings with co-workers or

lack of proper breaks.
