Praxis Core Exam Analysis

Exam Requirements

The Praxis Core Exam are tests that assess the test-takers’ skills in reading, writing, and

mathematics. The exam is not only used by colleges and universities to “measure the skills and

content knowledge of candidates entering teacher preparation programs”, but some states also

require the exam as “part of their teacher licensing process”. (ETS, 2019a) Nevada is one of the

states that requires the Praxis Core Exam to be taken by all educators. In order to pass the exam,

the qualifying scores (in Nevada) are as follows: a reading score of 156 or higher, a writing score

of 162 or higher, and a mathematics score of 150 or higher. (ETS, 2019b)

Exam Preparation

In order to prepare for my exam, I read the information in each link that was posted on

the Praxis Core Analysis assignment and signed up for Khan Academy. Albeit, I did not spend

enough time to prepare myself, I did study for two hours on each subject in within a span of three

days. I studied through Khan Academy and began by assessing myself. Then, I took the

recommended steps to advance. After each test, I would review the questions and answers, as

well as go over the quick guides, videos, and tips. I was not fully prepared with taking the

practice exam, but I felt confident that what I studied was worthwhile.

Exam Results
After spending around one hour to complete each practice test, I finally was able to

review my scores. The first test I took was mathematics, and I received a score of 80%, which

means that I am likely to pass the math section on the official Praxis Core Exam. The second test

that I took was the English portion. My score was 80%, which also means that I am likely to pass

the English section on the official exam. The final test was reading, and regrettable, my score

was 52%, which meant that I needed significant improvement. The scores reflected my

knowledge on the subjects and made it clear on what needed improvement.

Future Exam Preparation

To further prepare myself for my actual exam, I plan to continue using Khan Academy

twice to three times a week. I also plan to use the study companions provided by ETS, to focus

on the test content categories. As well as, focusing on improving my reading skills. Finding

videos of examples that further explain the content categories, will also be useful as a visual

representation, especially for mathematics. Overall, I plan to manage my study schedule

appropriately and give myself adequate time on each subject to further prepare for the official

exam.
