The Ultimate Resume Submittal Checklist

Use this handy resume submittal checklist as a powerful tool to make sure you have covered
everything you can before you email your resume to an employer submit it via an Applicant
Tracking System.

It is intended to be a “quick-list” and I’ve included links to additional explanations for each of
the sections!

1. Proper Layout with Correct Sections

Do I have the critical sections in the proper order?

 Career Profile
 Career Highlights
 Professional Experience
 Education
 Extracurricular

2. Career Profile

Does my Career Profile contain the information it needs so I’m controlling the narrative of
what I want the reviewer to see?

 Aggregate your work experience (this is what creates bigness)


 How many years of total experience or relevant experience
 Types of companies and industries
 Accomplishments and activities (high level not specific)
 Specific professional competencies

3. Career Highlights

Do my highlights focus on the powerful impacts employers are interested in understanding?

 Revenue generation (made)


 Market awareness (recognition)
 Customer attraction (lead generation)
 Customer happiness (service)
 Company growth (positioning, events)
 Employee happiness (attitude)
 Cost reduction (saved)
 Process efficiency (easier)

Do my highlights answer the 7 keys questions reviewers have when reading my bullets?

 What was the benefit? What happened as a result of me doing what I did?
 By how much? Quantity? Percentage?
 From what to what? What were the starting and ending number, percentage, etc.?
 From when to when? How long did it take me?
 By doing what? What was my activity?
 For whom? Who benefitted from me doing what I did?
 Additional context? Is there anything else relevant about this point?

4. Professional Experience

Does my Professional Experience Section include the proper items?

 Company
 Quick summary of your accomplishments
 Title
 Summary of description of accomplishments during the time I held that title

Do my bullets focus on the 8 big impact areas that show value (mentioned above in
Highlights)?

Do my bullets answer the 7 key questions employers have when reading my bullets
(mentioned about in the Highlights section)?

What do Employers Look for in a Resume?

5. Education

Have I included all the proper elements of my education?

 Schools (Universities Executive Programs, Trade Schools, etc.)


 Degrees
 Certifications
 School projects if appropriate
 To-be complete degrees, certifications, etc.

6. Extras

Did I include all the other relevant extracurriculars in my background (whether as their own
section of within the appropriate section)?

 Boards
 Foundations
 Charitable work
 Volunteer work
 Community service
 Non-Profit Groups
 Unpaid internships or work experience
 Research activities
 Any activity that shows motivation and leadership qualities you possess
 Languages you speak
 Clubs
 Publications
 Media appearances (if appropriate)
 Special interest groups
 Networking groups (if you actively run or participate)

7. Job Descriptions

Did I check the employer’s various, related job descriptions?

 Target Job: Does my resume include the keywords that match my target job
description?
 Previous Job at Employer (if able to find): Am I targeting the correct position for me or
should I be applying for the position one step below?
 Next Job at Employer (if able to find): Am I targeting the correct position for me or
should I be applying for the position one step above?

Did I check the employer’s competitors to review their analogous job descriptions to see if I
can get any additional insight that might be valuable to put on my resume?

8. Testing

Did I run my resume through Jobscan to ensure I could match the job description as closely as
possible?
