Title: Hooke’s Law

Aim: to investigate the extension of a spiral spring

Apparatus and materials:

 Retort stand
 Ruler
 Spiral spring
 Masses
 Mass hanger

Method

1. Set up the retort stand to hold the ruler

2. Measure the initial length of the spring
3. Place the slotted mass hanger on the spring measuring ___ g.
4. Measure the new length of the spring
5. Add a 20g mass to the hanger and measure the new length of the spring
6. Repeat step 5 eight times

Results

Mass on hanger Stretching Force Scale reading Extension

 Plot graph of Extension against Force

Diagram

Discussion

 State Hooke’s Law

 Discuss the relation between the extension of a spring and the force added
 Interpret the graph and discussion whether the spring obeyed Hooke’s Law

Possible sources of errors

 Parallax error
 Manufacture defect of the spring
 Possible errors in the graduation of the ruler
Limitations

 In the set up, it is difficult to align the 0 mark of the ruler with the top of the spring.
Therefore, manipulation of readings had to be done.

Conclusion

 State relationship between force and extension of a spring.

 Did the spring obey Hooke’s Law?
