Student will also be able to understand and explain why each shape belongs in their
specific category.
State Standards:
Geometry:
3.G.1 Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombus, rectangle, square,
and other 4-sided shapes) may share attributes (e.g., 4-sided figures) and the shared
attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilateral). Recognize rhombuses,
rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of
quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
Context:
I am teaching this lesson because shapes are everywhere! Learning about shapes will
help students visually learn signs and symbols and will help them distinct shapes into
different categories. Before this lesson on shapes, we learned about different line
segments and angles. After learning about this lesson plan, we will move on to learning
about 3D shapes and more in- depth angle lesson plans.
Data:
Students will be in groups of 4 people. The groups will be based on their assigned seats
in the classroom. The assigned seats change every other week so students get to work
with different groups of students throughout the year. I will record data based on how
well the groups work
together or how unsuccessfully the groups worked together. I will collect or check all
work completed during the class time and walk around the room to make sure students
are working.
Materials:
Notebook, Pencil, Ipad, Small white boards, and White board markers.
Procedures:
Introduction (5 minutes): The class will come in and sit in their assigned seats. The
first thing they will do is complete the do now on the board. The do now consists of 5
basic and quick questions based on shapes to refresh and get their brains going.
Questions will consist of matching the title of the shape to the pictures or name that
shape. When completed, students will be called on to shares their answers. They will
complete this do now in their notebooks.
Teacher Directed (15-20 minutes ): After the do now, the class will watch this 6/7
minute videos on shapes and how to categorize them (https://youtu.be/10dTx1Zy_4w).
After the video, students will be allowed to ask questions. I will also enlighten the class
about attributes within shapes, such as the number of sides and angles each shape
has, what type of angles make up the shape, and how many sets of parallel lines are
there in the shape. After learning these new keys terms and using their knowledge on
lines and angles from previous lesson plans, students can ask questions before working
in groups and on their own. Students will take notes in their notebooks.
Collaborative (10 minutes): For his activity students will use the small whiteboards
and whiteboard markers. 1 board and marker per person. Each member will one at a
time draw a shape on their white board and show the rest of their group members. The
other groups members will then draw the shape in their notebook and answer all of the
questions regarding the shape:
Closure (5 minutes): To close the class, students will go around the room and
name one shape and one fact about that shape that they learned in class.
Rationale:
This is a piece of multimedia because it is a helpful website that helps the kids engage
and complete assignments and games on the lesson plan topic. It supports the
standards and objectives because it helps the students complete work and use their
knowledge they learned in class online individually. It is high quality because it is easy
to navigate, the visuals are presentable and clear, learning is the goal of the activity,
and uses meaningful content we learned in class. This will help all learners because it
gives the students a chance to individually work on their own and through a different
setting other than in their notebooks.
