BACKGROUND
PCOS is characterized by increased ovarian and adrenal androgen secretion, hyperandrogenic symptoms
such as hirsutism, acne and/or alopecia, menstrual irregularity, and polycystic ovaries. In addition, insulin
resistance and hyperinsulinemia are common features in PCOS women. Decreased Vitamin D concentra-
tion has been proven to be associated with PCOS. Vitamin D deficiency might be a causal factor in the
pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome in PCOS. Vitamin D plays important role in metabolic pathways
affected by PCOS and its levels have been related with the severity of this disorder’s phenotype. More-
over, vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphisms have been shown to have an association with insulin
resistance and some of the patterns presented by PCOS. Although most women with PCOS are overweight
and obese, some PCOS patients have normal or even low body weight. Thus, this study aimed to
determined the effect of VDR mRNA expression on lean PCOS.
METHODS
This was a cross-sectional study conducted on non-obese PCOS subjects and non-obese control subjects
between January and July 2018. The diagnosis of PCOS is established using Rotterdam 2003 criteria for
PCOS. mRNA expression of Vitamin D Receptor was measured using quantitative real time polymerase
chain reaction (qPCR). Correlations were evaluated with calculation of the Spearman coeffient.
