Q.1
If f ( x)  x3  27 x. Find the intervals where the given function is
1. Increasing
2. Decreasing
3. Concave up
4. Concave down respectively.
Also find the point of inflection for the given function
Solution:
Given equation:
f ( x)  x3  27 x.
Differentiate

𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = 3𝑥 2 + [-27𝑥]
ⅆ𝑥

= [−27𝑥]
ⅆ𝑥
= 3𝑥 2 − 27

Set equal to ‘0’

3𝑥 2 − 27 = 0
3𝑥 2 = 27
Divided by ‘3’ both side

3𝑥 2 27
=
3 3

𝑥2 = 9
𝑥 = ±√9
𝑥 = ±3
The complete solution is the result of both the positive and negative portions of the
solution.
𝑥 = 3, −3
The values which make the derivative equal to 0 are 3,-3.
3, -3
Substitute a value from the interval (-∞,-3) into the derivative to determine if the function is
increasing or decreasing.

1. Increasing
Increasing on (-∞,-3) since 𝑓 ′ (𝑥) > 0

Substitute a value from the interval (-3, 3) into the derivative to determine if the function is
increasing or decreasing.

2. Decreasing
Decreasing on (-3, 3) Since 𝑓 ′ (𝑥) < 0

Substitute a value from the interval (3, ∞) into the derivative to determine if the function is
increasing or decreasing
Increasing on (3, ∞) since 𝑓 ′ (𝑥) > 0

List the intervals on which the function is increasing and decreasing.

Increasing on: (-∞, -3)

Decreasing on: (-3, 3)

3. Concave up
Substitute any number from the interval (0, ∞) into the second derivative and
evaluate to determine the concavity.
Replace the variable 𝑥 with 2 in the expression.
𝑓 ′′ (2) = 6(2)
Multiply 6 by 2
𝑓 ′′ (2) = 12
Final answer is =12

Concave up on (0, ∞) since 𝑓 ′′ (𝑥) is positive

4. Concave down:
Concave down on (-∞, 0) since 𝑓 ′′ (𝑥) is negative

5. Point of inflection:
First derivative is:
𝑓 ′ (𝑥) = 3𝑥 2 − 27
Second derivatives:
𝑓 ′′ (𝑥) = 6𝑥
The second derivative of 𝑓 ′ (𝑥) with respect to 𝑥 is 6𝑥.
6𝑥
Divided 6𝑥 = 0 by 6.
6𝑥 0
=
6 6
𝑥=0
Find the points where the second derivative is 0.
Substitute 0 in 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 − 27𝑥 to find the value of 𝑦.
Replace the variable 𝑥 with 0 in the expression.
𝑓(0) = (0)3-27.0
𝑓(0) = 0
Answer is. 0

The point found by substituting 0 in 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥3−27𝑥 is (0, 0). This point can be an
inflection point.
(0, 0)
Split (−∞, ∞) into intervals around the points that could potentially be inflection
points.
(−∞, 0) ∪ (0, ∞)
