Module 1: THE PHILIPPINE CONTEXT, THE IMPORTANCE OF DISASTER RISK

REDUCTION (DRR) AND ADAPTING TO RAPID CLIMATE CHANGE

This module talks about what is disaster, hazard and climate changed. The topic

hazard was reported by the group 1 that talks about the different types of hazard which

is very important since hazard is a physical event that can cause to loss of life. That

time I learned from the group that Philippines are prone to hazards because we are

near to Pacific ring of fire where typhoons and other hazards are being formed. Also the

Philippines have active fault lines and active volcanoes that make us vulnerable to

major earthquakes and volcanic eruption. But lastly, not only natural hazards we are

prone but also the human made hazards where cutting down of trees, kaingin, and

throwing garbage anywhere that can lead to serious damage of our community.

That time after the group presented their topic about hazards, one of our

classmates shared his idea if bird flu is human made or natural hazard. That specific

idea was being debated by the reporter and our classmate because there is no scientific

explanation that bird flu is human made or hazard. But according to our instructor it

depends on the situation because it can be either human made or natural because if it

is human made the flu was taken from the human and if it is natural it came from

environment where it depends on the climate.

The next group reported about the disaster, capacity and the disaster risk. They

discussed that the barangay must be aware what is disaster and their capacity to

overcome a certain disaster. By this way it could help the people in a certain barangay

to keep their selves from being safe as they already know how to prepare when a
hazard came. It’s really important to be aware, prepared and trained not just for them to

be safe but to help each other.

Module 2: CHILD –CENTERED DISASTER RISK REDUCTION AND

MANAGEMENT/CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTION (DRRM/CCA)

The group 1 discussed this topic that talks about the freedom and protection of a child.

When a child reach at 18 yrs. old, he or she has already freedom but when below 18

yrs. old they must be protected with the government according to the law because they

can’t able to fully protect themselves from being abuse or discrimination from others.

The group presented a short video that shows about on how parents disciplined their

children. In this way it can help the children to take care of themselves because

disciplined children are always the best. Also the first priority of DRRM must be the

children because they are “pag-asa ng bayan” according to DR. JOSE RIZAL. The

DRRM must be orienting the children what disaster or hazard is all about so that they

are aware of the things around them.

Module 3: Steps in Conducting Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction and

Management (CBDRRM).

The module was discussed by the group 2 that focuses in the CRA or

Community Risk Assessment which to identify the potential hazards and determine the

nature and extent of risks they pose. This topic helps us to know the strengths and

opportunities available within our environment that minimize the risk in our community. It

talks about the tools we need before the hazard came that can help us to be aware if

that particular area is in high risk, medium or low risk. It has a planning and monitoring

strategy when there is an upcoming disaster. And also it talks about children, and they

are connected to DRRM plan that children are must be first to be protected from

disaster because they are vulnerable.

Module 4

This module talks about the things to do before, during and after the disaster.

The group 3 discussed the importance on preparedness since we are near in Pacific

ring of fire that hazards are present. We need to prepare because prevention is better

than cure. The group discussed the” Go Bag kit” which consist kinds of needs in times

of disaster. Being prepared is one of the most important things in life because we didn’t

know when we are dying. It’s better to prepared to meet God in heaven than nothing.
Module 5: WHAT ARE THE NECESSARY CBFRRM MECHANISMS DURING AND

AFTER A DISASTER?

The module, talks about the mechanism of a barangay before and during a

disaster. This topic was discussed by the group 4 and they explained about the roles

and responsibilities of the BDRRMC, the roles of the BDRRMC is to orient the people of

a certain barangay how to prepare before and during a disaster. The responsibility of

the barangay is to make sure that the people are safe from disaster this is why

evacuation camp management are useful in times of disaster. Safe evacuation site can

make the people feel more comfortable during a disaster. Preparation is the key of

losing nothing from a disaster.
