Research title : Qualities of 21st Century Teacher

INTRODUCTION

Teaching, since ages, has been highly praised as a profession a profession where there is

dignity and respect it is only achievable if the teacher is dedicated, knowledgeable and

passionate at the same time this occupation demands qualities like tolerance, kindness and

honesty.

A teacher who simply enters a classroom stands there for an hour, read aloud or dictate

from a book and leaves class when the school bells ring it is not really a good teacher, he/she

must be capable to sense the pulse of classroom and regulate or modify his/her technique,

method consequently maintaining a high level interest among the students regarding a subject A

teacher plays an essential task in child’s mind and character development A profession as a

teacher is not simple by stretch of imagination becoming a teacher does not need the fulfillment

of certain academic qualification but becoming effective modern 21st century teacher required

some incredible qualities such as aware of ICT, lifelong learner, innovative, collaborative and a

great motivator .

Nowadays in 21st century it is mandatory for teachers to aware of information

communication technology unlike in the past where it was not required researcher can say that

educational systems around the world are under pressure to use technology to teach the students

skill and knowledge that they require in 21st century.

Moreover innovation and collaboration both very essential qualities of 21st century

teacher where the main aim behind any innovation in technology is to provide comfort,

productivity and better life Teacher have to expand teaching toolbox and try new applications

example replacing textbooks with web resources and make good collaboration with students.
Furthermore a major characteristic of a 21st century teacher is that they must be great motivators

whom motivate students towards learning teacher is the only one who can provide an

environment in which teaching can flourish with the help of their effective teaching qualities. So,

teachers of 21st century must have excellent competent qualities in order to perform their role

well.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

A teacher should possess the qualifications and professional knowledge required, The

question, therefore, is What qualifications are necessary for a teacher to be effective in his work?

Today we must have competent teacher who have a new set of resources, techniques and

technology, in modern era of 21st century the researcher hereby pick this topic to explain some

major qualities of the 21st century teacher which this modern era demands.

The task of the teacher in current era is not just to impart content based conceptual

knowledge. Rather a teacher of the day has to deal with next generation who are equipped with

information communication related knowledge and skills, In teaching and dealing with such type

of generation the teacher of the day needs some special skills. So the image of the teacher has

been changed from tradition to transformational.

Indeed it is essential for 21st century teacher to be innovative, collaborative, aware of

information communication technology, lifelong learner and more importantly a motivator to his

students.
OBJECTIVES

1. To develop awareness about modern teachers qualities.

2. To generate knowledge about information communication technology among

teachers.

3. To develop a sense of “ Be up to the task “ in 21st century teachers because this

era demands it.

HYPOTHESIS

1. Majority of college teachers have command on modern skills.

2. Most of the college teachers are familiar of information communication

technology.

3. Teachers of public sector colleges want to upgrade themselves according to

modern era.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESEARCH

Teaching is one of the noble professions of the world, Histories are the evidence of the

significance of the teacher and teaching process. The goals of teaching in a complex society are

diverse and it has been an important topic of the educationists for over the past several decades

and now in modern era of 21st century we must understands the qualities of 21st century teacher

indeed it is a very necessary task for educationist and teachers themselves.

Teacher can be categorized as effective or ineffective we have a traditional image of an

effective teacher such as kind, caring, rigid, punctual etc.


On the other hand teachers of 21st century have to be innovative and collaborative by

giving student real world problem to tackle with.

Similarly an excellent teacher is an extremely good learner as well he keeps on learning

because day by day new ways and technologies keep emerging hence the good modern teachers

adapt new emerging technologies as quickly as possible.

Moreover a teacher should be a professional motivator for himself and for other as well

to lead them greater path of this world.

REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE

Teaching is the very noble profession that shapes the character, caliber, and future of an

individual if the students remember me as a good teacher, that will be biggest honor for me

teaching has become more and more complex and challenging now days.

The focus of 21st century teacher is on developing student’s higher order thinking skills ,

effective communication, collaboration and other skills that they need in 21st century (jan ,2017)

Technology plays a vital role in developing these characteristics in a teacher the

technology changes day by day according to ( A. abdul kalam , 2017 ) if the four qualities are

available in the teacher they will have great experience in teaching four qualities are here

innovative , collaborative , lifelong learner and motivator. ( Kalam, 2017 )

The 21st century is rapidly changing one in every dimension of human economically,

socially, technologically due to rapid change complex problem are faced by educationist , policy

makers and teachers as well teacher of 21st century have to creat student of 21st century with soft
skills for doing so teacher must have mastery on technological tools that they use during

teaching. ( hafsah 2017 )

Further more Bell M.A said that technology provides powerful new tools to the teacher

which can be the major tool of effectiveness of the teacher in modern era M.A ( 2002 )

Innovation and collaboration are also essential qualities of 21st century teacher the main aim

behind any innovation in technology is to provide comfort teacher have to expand teaching

toolbox and try new application example replacing text book with web resources

zargham,(2012)

Teacher have to be technologically knowledgeable in this modern era all teachers of 21st century

must upgrade their skills according to the change of time and era they need to increase their level

of changing and technology because excellence is a continuous process it getting higher and

higher according to hard work ( jan 2017 ).

However every teacher should be familiar with presentation of software such as power point,

excel etc. presentation of power point or any other tool may take little long time but it has great

influence on students ( Poole ) 2006.

Similarly 21st sentury teachers need to be skilled in the use of productivity tools, not just

because they are the best tolls for teaching but also they are the important tools of learning as

well. ( E.F 2005 )

On the other hand if teachers of 21st century do not adapt the requirement of an era they will feel

and face difficulties in teaching because nowadays students are from diverse background they

are different by nature by language and by economical factors as well.


Miller in 2009 said that it is important for teacher to maintain their students interest in

the class that they improve their learning it is only possible when the teacher has qualities like

motivation and collaboration . ( miller 2009 )

With regard to the teaching approach, it seems that the more effective teachers ( McBer

2000, set realistic objectives, try and give incentives to student it depends on the teachers ability

to recognize the diversity of the student. ( McBer 2000 )

The qualities that can ensure a teacher effectiveness are not sum of his knowledge but rather the

link between the different types of knowledge such as awareness about ICT and knowledge of

current issues. (Turner-Bisset 2001)

Quality is a degree of excellence ( Webster )

Quality is the ongoing process of building and sustaining relationship by assessing,

anticipating and fulfilling stated and implied needs.

21st century skills

The term “21st century skills” is generally used to certain core competencies such as

collaboration, digital literacy critical thinking and problem solving that advocates believe of

school need to teach and to help students thrive in today’s world.


TEACHER

A teacher is a person who helps student to acquire knowledge.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This research is design to observed the qualities of 21st century teachers.

To identify these qualities the researcher will chose quantitative method in this , survey method

will be conducted.

The purpose of the researcher for selecting this method is to collect authentic data.

Quantitative method

Quantitative methods emphasize objective measurements and the statistical,

mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires, and surveys,

or by manipulating pre-existing statistical data using computational.

Survey method

A Survey is defined as a research method used for collecting data from a pre-defined

group of respondents to gain information and insights on various topics of interest. Surveys have

a variety of purposes and can be carried out in many ways depending on the methodology chosen

and the objectives to be achieved.


CONTEXT OF THE RESEARCH

This research will be conducted in 13 colleges of public sector from gulshan e iqbal town

Karachi those 13 colleges are

Government Degree College gulshan town

Government Degree College Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulshan Town

Government Degree Boys College Gulzar-E-Hijri, Gulshan Town

Government National College, No. 1. , Gulshan Town

Government National College, No. 2. , Gulshan Town

Government Girls College Gulistan-e-Johar, Gulshan Town

Government Girls College Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulshan Town

Shaheed-e-Millat Government Degree Girls, Gulshan Town

Government Girls College P.I.B. Colony, Gulshan Town

Hayat-ul-Islam Girls Degree College, Gulshan Town

HRH Agha Khan Government Girls College, Gulshan Town

Khatoon-e-Pakistan Government College for Women, Gulshan Town

New Century College, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulshan Town.


POPULATION

A research population is generally a large collection of individuals or objects that is the

main focus of a scientific query.

In this study the research population is 130 teachers from 13 colleges of public sector

from Gulshan e Iqbal town Karachi.

SAMPLE AND SAMPLING

Sampling is the process of selecting a part of population.

The sampling will be done through random sampling technique and a total of 10 teachers

( sample ) will be selected from each college of public sector from Gulshan e Iqbal town

Karachi.

DATA COLLECTION TOOL

In this study questionnaire will be the data collection tool by which the data of 130

teachers will be collected.

Questionnaire

The questionnaire is the main instrument for collecting data in survey research basically

it is a set of standardized questions, often called items, which follow a fixed scheme in order to

collect individual data about one or more specific topics.

DATA ANALYSIS

The data will be analyzed through descriptive statistic and manual excel.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES

After completing this study teachers, educationist, and policy makers will come to know

about unique qualities of 21st century teachers that they must keep.

ETHICAL CONSIDERATION

To follow the ethical consideration researcher have made lot of reading regarding ethics

in research as all my research participants are adult, mature, extremely busy professionals, so I

have to be very conscious about ethical consideration.

Voluntary participation

The researcher did not pressurize anybody to participate or not to participate. Selection

of research participants is purely on voluntary basis.

Informed Consent

As all my research participants are mature adult and teacher so I will collect information

about their schedule and take permission to give them questionnaires.

Risk of harm

The research study does not include any harm or risk factor for the participant .it is not an

experimental study so it does not include any risk factor.


Anonymity

Anonymity of the teacher will be maintain by using code numbers instead of name the

names of participants are represented by using code numbers.

TIME LINE

Approximately This research will be conducted within 4 months.
