SUMMER TRAINING PROJECT GUIDELINES

Introduction

The Summer Training Program (STP) forms an important component of education. It is an

attempt to bridge the gap between the academic institution and corporate world. Under this, the

students must undertake 8 weeks training at any organization during the Intervening period

between close of Semester IV and commencement of Semester V. The training, which would

be a simulation of real work environment, requires the students to undergo the rigor of

professional environment both in form and substance. It exposes them to technical skills, and

helps them to acquire social skills by drawing them into contact with real professionals.

For proper coordination and ensuring organized and smooth conduct, each student will also be

guided by Faculty of the institute. A representative of the industry/organization also guides the

student and assists the faculty in monitoring the student's progress.

Objective

STP is a vehicle for introducing students to real-life situation, which cannot be simulated in the

classroom. Therefore, STP assignments must necessarily be those of direct interest to the host

organization. Students are encouraged to take up time bound multi-disciplinary and goal-

oriented assignment involving team work. Solutions to various problems confronted in the

assignment might be open-ended, involving an element of analytical thinking, processing and

decision-making in the face of insufficient data parameters and uncertain situations.

SCOPE
vii
The project study is to be based on the functional area Marketing, Finance, HRM. Before

commencement of project study each student is to develop a synopsis in consultation with

his/her guide in the chosen functional area covering the broad aspects on which the data is

proposed to be collected and analysis is to be conducted. It may be noted that the chosen

functional area is not restrictive. If the student finds any other area interesting or otherwise,

they must explore it and comment on it in his /her report. Each student is required to carry out

the work and submit the report individually.

Each student is required to carry out the work independently and submit the Summer Training

Report individually fulfilling the laid down objectives. Any previous work or borrowed report

will be summarily rejected and in all cases of rejection the work is to be repeated afresh. It is

mandatory for each student to get the approval of the name of firm/company from the Industry

Institute Partnership Cell (IIPC) of the institute prior to commencement of training. Once the

name of firm/company is approved, it cannot be changed.

CONDUCT AND BEHAVIOUR The students during STP are placed in the role of

ambassadors of the institute. The Institute would always expect students to maintain

professional and social imprints of high standards in the organization. Institute expects the

students to abide by the rules and regulations of the place of work during training. It is

particularly important to be regular, punctual and well mannered at work. During the period of

training the student shall be subject to the leave rules of the STP organization and should ensure

strict adherence to the timings of the organization. Unprofessional behaviour, misconduct,

indiscipline, irregularity at work and unsatisfactory performance will lead to cancellation of

STP.

viii
During the period of study, it is imperative that students maintain a diary/ notebook for

recording activities observed & carried out. Gather secondary data by obtaining company

documents, manuals, information booklets/leaflets, product lists, price lists catalogues, annual

reports publicity material etc. 1. Identify the Business Establishment 2. Join the organization

/ get attached as a Trainee 3. Maintain attendance record & diary 4. Involve & observe their

conduct of activities/ working or execute the assigned tasks 5. Procure certificate of attendance

and completion of summer project from concerned authority / officials on satisfactory

completion of the Summer Training.

Along with the data, following general information is to be collected by the student irrespective

of their functional areas/topic etc. 1. Sales performance for last five years (Product wise if

possible) a) In Units b) in Rupees. 2. Number of Employees, different section wise with due

classification like skilled, semiskilled, unskilled workers, officers, managers, etc. 3.

CHAPTER-1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction to industry and organisation

1.1.1 Introduction to industry

The Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) field is a primary subfield within

the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) domain. The ATMS view is a top – down

management perspective that integrates technology primarily to improve the flow of vehicle

traffic and improve safety. Real-time traffic data from cameras, speed sensors, etc. flows into

a Transportation Management Center (TMC) where it is integrated and processed (e.g. for

incident detection), and may result in actions taken (e.g. traffic routing, DMS messages) with

the goal of improving traffic flow. The National ITS Architecture defines the following primary

goals and metrics for ITS:

1.Increase transportation system efficiency,

2.Enhance mobility,

3.Improve safety,

4.Reduce fuel consumption and environmental cost,

5.Increase economic productivity, and

6.Create an environment for an ITS market.

(a) Advanced Traffic Management History

In 1956, the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act initiated a 35-year $114 billion

program that designed and constructed the Interstate highway system. This hugely successful

program was mostly complete by 1991, and the era of build-out was over. In the mid to late

1980s transportation officials from Federal and State governments, the private sector, and

universities began a series of informal meetings discussing the future of transportation. This

included meetings held by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in October

1
1986 to discuss technology applied to future advanced highways. In June 1988 in

Washington, DC, the group formalized its structure and chose the name Mobility 2000. In

1990, Mobility 2000 morphed into ITS America, the main ITS advocacy and policy group in

the US. The initial name of ITS America was IVHS America and was changed in 1994 to

reflect a broader intermodal perspective. The 1991 Intermodal Surface Transportation

Efficiency Act (ISTEA) was the first post-build-out transportation act. It initiated a new

approach focused on efficiency, intelligence, and intermodalism. It had a primary goal of

providing “the foundation for the nation to compete in the global economy”. This new

mixture of infrastructure and technology was identified as an Intelligent Transportation

System (ITS) and was the centerpiece of the 1991 ISTEA act. ITS is loosely defined as “the

application of computers, communications, and sensor technology to surface transportation”.

Subsequent surface transportation bills have continued ITS funding and development. In 2005

the SAFETEA-LU (Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A

Legacy for Users) surface transportation spending bill was signed into law.

(b) ATMS functional arears:

1.Real-time traffic monitoring

2.Dynamic message sign monitoring and control

3.Incident monitoring

4.Traffic camera monitoring and control

5.Active Traffic Management

6.Chain control

7.Ramp meter monitoring and control

8.Arterial management

2
9.Traffic signal monitoring and control

An intelligent transportation system is an advanced application which, without embodying

intelligence as such, aims to provide innovative services relating to different modes of

transport and traffic management and enable users to be better informed and make safer, more

coordinated, and 'smarter' use of transport networks

Research Design: A research design is the arrangement of conditions for collection and analysis

of data in a manner that aims to combine relevance to the research purpose with economy in

procedure. Research design is the conceptual structure within which research is conducted,

constitutes blue print for collection, measurement and analysis of data.

The research design used here is descriptive research design.

Descriptive Research design: Descriptive research is also called Statistical Research. The

main goal of this type of research is to describe the data and characteristics about what is being

studied. The idea behind this type of research is to study frequencies, averages, and other

statistical calculation

(a) Sources of Information

15
1.Primary Data:

For collecting primary data an approved structure-questionnaire was used which was a

framework of various questions covering various aspects of job satisfaction.

2.Secondary Data:

Available published books, magazines, journals etc. has been used to better understand the

concept, nature and even application of the problem so as to derive fruitful result. Even the

literature, Pamphlets, past reports and the website of the company provided valuable inputs.

(b)Tools and techniques

The data was collected through questionnaire method and personal interview. Again, the

research is descriptive type. The analysis is done through the tabular and graphical

representation.

SURVEY AREA

The research is done in the different areas of India which are given below:.

Ghaziabad and Noida and toll plaza.

(c) Research Limitations

It is for sure that your research will have some limitations and it is normal. However, it is

critically important for you to be striving to minimize the range of scope of limitations

throughout the research process. Also, you need to provide the acknowledgement of your

research limitations in conclusions chapter honestly.

It is always better to identify and acknowledge shortcomings of your work, rather than to leave

them pointed out to your by your dissertation assessor. While discussing your research

16
limitations, don’t just provide the list and description of shortcomings of your work. It is also

important for you to explain how these limitations have impacted your research findings.

Research limitations in a typical dissertation may relate to the following points:

1. Formulation of research aims and objectives. You might have formulated research aims and

objectives too broadly. You can specify in which ways the formulation of research aims and

objectives could be narrowed so that the level of focus of the study could be increased.

2. Implementation of data collection method. Because you do not have an extensive experience

in primary data collection (otherwise you would not be reading this book), there is a great

chance that the nature of implementation of data collection method is flawed.

3. Sample size. Sample size depends on the nature of the research problem. If sample size is too

small, statistical tests would not be able to identify significant relationships within data set. You

can state that basing your study in larger sample size could have generated more accurate

results. The importance of sample size is greater in quantitative studies compared to qualitative

studies.

4. Lack of previous studies in the research area. Literature review is an important part of any

research, because it helps to identify the scope of works that have been done so far in research

area. Literature review findings are used as the foundation for the researcher to be built upon to

achieve her research objectives

ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS

2.1 Internal Analysis of The Company

A Natural examination is a nearby take a gander at an organization's qualities, shortcoming,

opportunities and dangers regarding vital factors, for example, the economy, the item, staff

assets, rivalry, innovation, enactment, purchaser patterns, condition, and etc.It is a typical

device utilized as a part of authoritative arranging and methodology advancement. The essential

supposition of a swot examination is that associations must adjust inside exercises to outer

substances to be effective.

Qualities and shortcoming are basically inside to the association and identify with issues

concerning assets and projects inside the organization while openings and dangers are outer

components facing an organization, for example, new advancements, rivalry etc.

2.1.1 What Is SWOT Analysis?

SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis is a framework used to

evaluate a company's competitive position and to develop strategic planning. SWOT analysis

assesses internal and external factors, as well as current and future potential.

A SWOT analysis is designed to facilitate a realistic, fact-based, data-driven look at the

strengths and weaknesses of an organization, its initiatives, or an industry. The organization

needs to keep the analysis accurate by avoiding pre-conceived beliefs or gray areas and instead

focusing on real-life contexts. Companies should use it as a guide and not necessarily as a

prescription.

2.7 Key Challenges Faced By The Company

Blistering heat, harsh monsoon and slayer thunderstorms are a few challenges that an Indian

commercial driver faces season after season. But the snaking queues at the toll plazas are a

regular affair. And, when the turn comes, he had to wait again after paying cash to the booth

operator till the tariff is counted; change is taken out, counted again and handed back with a

printed receipt.

A survey conducted by Transport Corporation of India (TCI) and IIM Kolkata in 2013 says that

Rs. 60,000 Crore or USD 9.2 billion was lost every year in the toll booth hold ups. The Indian

National Highway Association (NHAI) then proposed to the government a digital alternative

29
to toll booth transactions. The alternate module is FASTag, which was eventually implemented

to simplify and ensure hassle-free operations at the toll plazas.

What is FasTag?

FasTag is a radio frequency identification device (RFID), which comes as a reloadable tag that

ensures seamless movement of a vehicle on the run on highways. The device has to be registered

with Central Clearing House (CCH) operators and the bank account first. And then, it needs to

be placed on the vehicle’s windscreen. When the vehicle passes through a toll plaza, the sticker

or tag is auto-scanned and payment is instantly deducted from a prepaid account linked to the

tag.

What are the FasTag benefits?

Saves time – A special lane dedicated for FasTag users means it saves time.

Ease of payment – A user can avoid carrying cash for the toll transactions.

Seamless movement – The non-stop vehicular movement means lower fuel cost.

Online Recharge – Need not to stand in a queue to recharge the tag. Users can recharge a FasTag

online through credit card/debit card/ NEFT/RTGS/net banking.

SMS alerts – There is a provision to alert the users through SMS about their toll transactions,

low balance, etc.

Online Portal – A user can sign up on the online portal and use it to recharge, lodge complaint

or check what’s latest.

Validity – Validity of 5 years means that the tag is making life easy for users, as it has to be

reissued only once in every five years.

Environmental benefit – Implementation of FasTag has reduced air pollution and use of paper.

Social benefit – There’s a drastic change in the toll plazas, as toll payment hassles are

minimized and highway management system has improved.

Economic benefit – The FasTag has also reduced the efforts in managing the toll plazas.

30
While the FasTag has many positive sides, it also has its drawbacks. It will come as a complete

winner only if these flaws are sorted as soon as possible.

What are the challenges faced by FasTag?

FasTag charge is high for multi-axle vehicles – Multi-axle vehicle owners are hesitant to opt

for FasTag as the toll charges for such vehicles are quite high. A truck requires more than Rs.

2,000 for 10 trips while a car can make 10 trips at a much lower value. This gives people the

ideas for deploying car tags in trucks.

FasTag may not be approved – When there is no amount in the account, no credit is given to

the users. Then the user has to pay in cash. Moreover, at times, the RFID scanner goes through

technical issues, leaving a FasTag user in a fix to pay the toll amount in cash.

FasTag can be stolen or lost – Since the FasTag comes in a tag form, it can easily be stolen or

lost. In such a situation, one should never forget to request the agency to block the FasTag

account instantly and process re-issuance.

FasTag can be wrongly charged – Due to technical flaws, at times, a FasTag user may be

wrongly charged. And, the user is only left with the option to report the matter as soon as he/she

comes to know about it and asking for reimbursement.

FasTag may face malfunction or damage – A user can report about the same and ask for a

replacement.

FasTag faces the issue of discipline at all most every toll plaza – Vehicles without the FasTags

enter the designated lane while the ones with FasTags wait for their turn, behind these vehicles.

Same lane for electronic toll collection (ETC) and very important person (VIP) – There should

be a dedicated ETC lane at every toll plaza. Not having a dedicated ETC lane means the purpose

of FasTag fails as it causes a delay in the journey of FasTag users.

Though FasTag is seen as an advantageous mode of toll collection system, offering benefits to

both – the user and the collector, until the drawbacks or the challenges are not uprooted to the

base, the module can face serious crunch. The Government of India needs to consider the

31
challenges faced by FasTag and come up with positive solutions to make the most out of a

technologically superior mode of toll collection.

1. Inconsistency in revenue projection: There is no government agency to guide bidders while

making the revenue projections and related assumptions.

2. Current form of Motor Vehicle Act is weak: No electronic database of vehicles is maintained

in India. Also, the legal framework to catch toll defaulters is weak in India.

3. Issues related to implementation of ETC systems: Toll plazas need to struggle hard for basic

requirements like Internet connectivity and utility power. Also, cashless modes like smart cards

and onboard units are not mandatory.

4. Inaccurate vehicle classification: Toll road operators face under tolling owing to the lack of a

uniform system for classification of vehicles in India. The sensor devices are unable to

differentiate between a four-axle vehicle and a modified two-axle vehicle.

5. Thefts at cash toll plazas: From the lack of camera surveillance to no armed security guards,

and unlocked collection booths to inadequate access control, toll operators need to buck up.

6. Poor toll management skills: The need of the hour calls for deploying skilled staff along with

appropriate toll management tools like automatic boom barriers and overhead light signals.

7. Lack of stringent IT controls: Unauthorized modifications to the existing systems at toll plazas

also lead to under tolling.

8. Customer Issues: Other than toll charges, motorists are not in favor of bearing the cost of tags

or cards. Resistance comes from commercial truck operators as well who mention about paying

motor vehicle tax and diesel/petrol ces

CHAPTER -3

DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS

This chapter includes the collection of data from various functional areas of the company with

the help of primary and secondary data collection sources.

3.1 Signifiant accounting policies

(a) Use of estimates

The preparation of financial statements in conformity with Indian GAAP requires the

management to make judgments, estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amount of

revenues, expenses, assets and liabilities and the disclosure of contingent liabilities, at the end

of the reporting period. Although these estimates are based on the management's best

knowledge of current events and actions, uncertainty about these assumptions and estimates

could result in the outcomes requiring a material adjustment to the carrying amounts of assets

or liabilities in future periods.

(b) Tangible fixed assets

Fixed Assets are stated at cost and other incidental expenses less accumulated depreciation.

Cost comprises the purchase price and any attributable cost such as duties (net of CENVAT)

freight, borrowing costs, erection and commissioning expenses, incurred in bringing the asset

to its working condition for its intended to use and adjustments arising from exchange rate

variance relating to borrowing, attributable to the fixed assets. When an asset is scrapped or

otherwise disposed off, the cost and related Depreciation are removed from the books of
35
accounts and resultant profit (Including capital profit) or loss, if any, is reflected in the

Statement of profit & loss.

(c) Depreciation and Amortization on tangible fixed assets

The Company is charging the depreciation on straight line method based on useful life of

Assets, as prescribed by schedule II of the companies Act, 2013 or Actual useful life estimated

by the management whichever is lower. The useful life for the amortization of assets is given

as under;

Assets Class Rates

Factory Building (Leasehold Improvement) The Rate based on the lease term, i.e. for the

period of 9 years equal basis.

Plant & Machinery 20 Years

Office Equipment 5 years

Furniture & Fixtures 10 Years

Computers 3 years

Server & networks 6 years

Vehicles 8 Years

(d) Intangible Assets

Intangible assets are amortized on a straight line basis over the estimated useful economic

life. The company uses a rebuttable presumption that the useful life of an intangible asset will

not exceed three years from the date when the asset is available for use. If the persuasive

evidence exists to the affect that useful life of an intangible asset exceeds five years, the

company amortizes the intangible asset over the best estimate of its useful life. Such intangible

36
assets not yet available for use are tested for impairment annually, either individually or at the

cash generating unit level. All

other intangible assets are assessed for impairment whenever there is an indication that the

intangible asset may be impaired.

At each balance sheet date, the Company assesses whether there is any indication that an asset

may be impaired. If any such indication exists, the Company estimates the recoverable amount.

If the carrying amount of the asset exceeds its recoverable amount, an impairment loss is

recognized in the Statement of Profit & Loss to the extent the carrying amount exceeds the

recoverable amount.

(e) Borrowing Cost

Borrowing cost includes interest, amortization of ancillary costs incurred in connection with

the arrangement of borrowings and exchange differences arising from foreign currency

borrowings to the extent they are regarded as an adjustment to the interest cost.

Borrowing cost directly attributable to the acquisition, construction or production of an assets

that necessarily takes a substantial period of time to get ready for its intended use or sale are

capitalized as part of the cost of the respective asset. All other borrowing costs are expensed in

the period they occur.

(f) Revenue recognition

37
Revenue is recognized to the extent that it is probable that the economic benefits will flow to

the company and the revenue can be reliably measured. The following specific recognition

criteria must also be met before revenue is recognized:

Services

Revenue from the sale of services recognized upon passage of title to the customers

which generally coincides with their delivery & acceptance of goods by the customers. The

company collects taxes on behalf of the government and as and where applicable, therefore,

these are not economic benefits flowing to the company. Hence, they are excluded from

revenue. Any Duty is deducted from revenue (gross) is the amount that is included in the

revenue (gross) and not the entire amount of liability arising during the year

Interest

Interest income is recognized on a time proportion basis taking into account the amount

outstanding and the applicable interest rate. Interest income is included under the head "other

income" in the statement of profit and loss.

(g) .Foreign currency transaction

Initial Recognition

Foreign Currency transactions are recorded in the reporting currency by applying to the foreign

currency amount the exchange rate between the reporting currency and the foreign currency at

the date of the transaction.

38
Conversion

Foreign Currency monetary items are reported using the closing rate. Non-monetary items,

which are carried in terms of historical cost denominated in the Foreign Currency, are reported

using the exchange rate at the date of the transaction.

Exchange Differences

Exchange differences arising on the settlement of monetary items or on reporting company’s

monetary items at rates different from those at which they were initially recorded during the

year, or reported in the previous financial statements are recognized as income or as expense in

the year in which they arise, except those relating to liability for acquiring fixed assets from

outside India are capitalized as a part of fixed asset.

Income Taxes

Tax expense comprises current tax and deferred tax. Current income tax is measured at the

amount expected to be paid to the tax authorities in accordance with the Indian Income Tax

Act. Deferred income taxes reflects the impact of current year timing differences between

taxable income and accounting income for the year and reversal of timing differences of earlier

years.

Minimum Alternate Tax (MAT) paid in accordance with the tax laws, which gives future

economic benefits in the form of adjustment to future income tax liability, is considered as an

asset if there is convincing evidence that the Company will pay normal income tax.

Accordingly, MAT is recognized as an asset in the Balance Sheet when it is probable that future

economic benefit associated with it will flow to the Company.

Deferred tax is measured based on the tax rates and the tax laws enacted or substantively

enacted at the balance sheet date. Deferred tax assets are recognized only to the extent that there
39
is reasonable certainty that sufficient future taxable income will be available against which such

deferred tax assets can be realized. In situations where the Company has unabsorbed

depreciation or carry forward tax losses, all deferred tax assets are recognized only if there is

virtual certainty supported by convincing evidence that they can be realized against future

taxable profits.

At each balance sheet date the Company re-assesses unrecognized deferred tax assets. It

recognizes unrecognized deferred tax assets to the extent that it has become reasonably certain

or virtually certain, as the case may be that sufficient future taxable income will be available

against which such deferred tax assets can be realized.

The carrying amount of deferred tax assets are reviewed at each balance sheet date. The

Company writes-down the carrying amount of a deferred tax asset to the extent that it is not

longer reasonably certain or virtually certain, as the case may be, that sufficient future taxable

income will be available against which deferred tax asset can be realized. Any such write-down

is reversed to the extent that it becomes reasonably certain or virtually certain, as the case may

be, that sufficient future taxable income will be available.

Deferred tax assets and deferred tax liabilities are offset, if a legally enforceable right exists to

set off current tax assets against current tax liabilities and the deferred tax assets and deferred

taxes relate to the same taxable entity and the same taxation authority.

Earnings per share

The basic Earnings per Share (EPS) is computed by dividing the net profit after tax for the year

by the weighted average number of equity shares outstanding during the year.

For the purpose of calculating diluted earnings per share, the net profit or loss for the period

attributable to equity shareholders and the weighted average number of shares outstanding

during the period are adjusted for the effects of all dilutive potential equity shares.
40
Post Employment Benefit Plans

Contributions to defined contribution retirement benefit schemes are charged as an expense as

they fall due.

For defined benefit Schemes, the cost of providing benefits is determined using the projected

unit credit method, with actuarial valuations being carried out at each Balance Sheet date

Actuarial gain and losses are recognized in full in the Statement of profit and loss for the period

in which they occur. Past service cost is recognized immediately to the extent that the benefits

are already vested.

The retirement benefit obligation recognized in the Balance Sheet represents the present value

of the defined benefit obligation as adjusted for unrecognized past service cost, and as reduced

by the fair value of scheme assets. Any asset resulting from this calculation is limited to past

service cost, plus the present value of available refunds and reductions in future contributions

to the scheme.

Other Employee Benefits

The undiscounted amount of short-term employee benefits expected to be paid in exchange for

the services rendered by employees is recognized during the period when the employee renders

the service. These benefits include compensated absences such as paid annual leave, Bonus and

performance incentives.

Compensated absences which are not expected to occur within twelve months after the end of

the period in which the employee renders the related services are recognized as an actuarially

41
determined liability at the present value of the defined benefit obligation at the balance sheet

date.

Lease

Leases where the less or effectively retains substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership

of the leased assets are classified as operating leases. Operating lease payments are recognized

as an expense in the statement of profit and loss account on straight-line basis over the lease

term.

Provisions

A provision is recognized when an enterprise has a present obligation as a result of past event

and it is probable that an outflow of resources will be required to settle the obligation, in respect

of which a reliable estimate can be made. Provisions are not discounted to their present value

and are determined based on management estimate required to settle the obligation at the

Balance Sheet date. These are reviewed at each Balance Sheet date and adjusted to reflect the

current management estimates.

Contingent Liabilities

A contingent liability is a possible obligation that arises from past events whose existence will

be confirmed by the occurrence or non-occurrence of one or more uncertain future events

beyond the control of the company or a present obligation that is not recognized because it is

not probable that an outflow of resources will be required to settle the obligation. A contingent

liability also arises in extremely rare cases where there is a liability that cannot be recognized

because it cannot be measured reliably. The company does not recognize a contingent liability

but discloses its existence in the financial statements.

42
(h) Cash Flow Statement

Cash flows are reported using the indirect method, whereby profit / (loss) before extraordinary

items and tax is adjusted for the effects of transactions of non-cash nature and any deferrals or

accruals of past or future cash receipts or payments. The cash flows from operating, investing

and financing activities of the Company are segregated based on the available information.’

Free Cash flow of the company is all inflows from debtors with less of expenses, creditors &

loans after that the figure comes is cash inflow.
