I have repeatedly shown determination to succeed right from secondary to undergraduate level, by

maintaining a good academic standing. However, I would not have achieved this level of education
without the support of my mother, currently a retired civil servant. She has actually sacrificed a lot to
provide a decent life for me and my siblings. She has also provided us with quality education because
she is aware of its significance and value in our society. But that financial obligation can no longer be
met since her retirement from service. As a result, I seek to acquire this scholarship which will enable
to fulfil my set goals.

The dearth of foreign trained power systems experts, I believe is one of the contributing factors to
the perennial down time that has bedevilled the Nigerian power sector for decades. However, most
of those who have got the opportunity to acquire their degrees overseas tend to flood the Telecoms
sector, which is undeniably one of the fastest growing technological sectors, thus, leaving over the
Power sector ill developed. This is one of the major reasons I wish to delve into this moribund sector,
to help in its development.

As earlier stated, the Nigeria’s power sector is steadily improving, and there is need for more power
systems experts in the industry. I hope to return to Nigeria after completing my studies to help in the
transformation of Power sector. I would like to be of one of the pioneers in the revolution of the
power system of Nigeria.

The global mindfulness of the phenomenon of climate change together with the anticipated scarcity
of conventional energy resources have prompted many countries around the world to develop a more
sustainable energy systems to cater for development and growth. Renewable energy provides a safe
and feasible option for the provision of a clean and environment friendly energy. There exists a vast
biomass potential in the form of bio-crops and biogas, wind, solar and small hydro in Nigeria, albeit
being grossly underutilized.

The Nigerian Energy Commission and the Solar Energy Society of Nigeria have been tasked with
generating a standalone solar-powered solution for the remote dwellers. Nigeria is looking towards
further development of renewable energies such as wind, solar and biomass to close the generation
shortfall and foster the economic growth. In order to achieve this, there is urgent need for foreign
trained renewable energy experts that can harness and manage the available renewable energy
resources in the country.

I believe that a post graduate degree programme in either power systems engineering or renewable
energy systems, would provide me the requisite knowledge and connections needed to succeed in
this field. Without a doubt, I also believe, with state of the art academic facility and conducive learning
environment, will in no small measure develop and prepare me mentally to take this challenge. I hope
to return to Nigeria after completing my studies in either of these fields to help in transforming of the
Nigeria power sector.

Secondly, I hope to strengthen the Nigeria’s Technological base. The synergy from colleagues within
and outside the sector will invariably lead to our technological independence/advancement. This will
in turn reduce the need for foreign expatriates which is quite expensive and unsustainable to the
Government of Nigeria. Above all, I strongly believe in the transfer of knowledge; thus, one of my
aims on return to Nigeria will be to help in training the young and talented Nigerians. No one would
refute the fact that potentials abound especially in Humans.
