Ayana Rivera Application Essay #2 11/6/19

The leader that I look up to on campus is Professor Priscilla Alfaro-Barrantes. I choose Professor

Priscilla because she is a leader that always is helpful and wants what’s best for her students. As

a leader she is someone that I’ve always looked up not only that she is a woman, but a Latina

woman being a sports management professor. In the sports industry there aren’t a lot of women

working within it and in general not a lot of Latina women. As I am preparing for my future, I

want to do my best and prove others that I would be a great Latina woman working within the

sports management industry.

Professor Priscilla models the way by taking initiative into her own hands and being a women

professor part of the sports management staff at Nichols College. She inspires a share vision by

expressing her love of sports and getting her students prepared for what it’s like to be working in

the sports industry in the real world. She challenges the process by challenging her students to

work hard and for her students to do well when interviewing for internships. Professor Priscilla

encourages the heart by checking up on her students being sure that they’re doing well in their

class and if something is wrong, she will be there for you no matter what. There was a time

where I kept my feelings all bottled up which wasn’t good but talking to her about what was

wrong with me not only helped me get my feelings out, but she was very supportive of my

decision. She told me that if you ever need anything just come by her office, text, call, or email

her. She appreciated that I went to her to talk about my problems and she is someone that I can

trust to tell everything. Not only she is my professor but also my advisor and having her to talk to

made things a lot better for me. She enables others to make sure that they’re getting their work

done with the best quality and being sure that not only you are doing the work yourself but your

whole group itself does the work equally.

My style of leadership is like Priscilla because we are the type of leaders to be independent,

outgoing, and helpful. As a leader myself, I am very independent and need the time to myself. I

mean yes, I do have my friends but they’re times where I want to just get my work done on my

own or just my alone doing my thing. I take initiative of what is going to be beneficial for my

future and being sure that I get the help that I need to succeed. As an outgoing person I always

associate with other people and network with faulty that will help me with my future. As a leader

I am very helpful taking the step to cheer someone up, giving them advice on a situation, or

helping within my school/home community.

The three traits that Professor Priscilla exhibits is passion, self-confidence, and a good

communicator. She is very passionate about sports especially football. She is always up to date

with what's happening in sports such as the players, stats, games, and fantasy sports. She has

self-confidence by ensuring that her students are succeeding, and she wants what's best for them.

She is absolutely the best at communicating if it's with the faulty at Nichols or the students. She

contacts students by either email, cell, or in person to make sure how the student is doing. She is

very well with replying quick and efficiently to her students.

If Professor Priscilla was a superhero, she would be Wonder women because she is a strong

passionate woman who loves sports and she as well workouts to be in shape. Even though she

herself doesn’t play a sport, she puts in the effort to work out and be fit. Wonder women the

superhero herself cares about saving people from danger and as for Priscilla she ensures that if

something is bothering a student, she cares about them and their well-being. Wonder women also

shows empowerment as a leader since in reality there aren’t a lot of women in businesses that are

in the higher power. As for Priscilla she shows empowerment as a Latina woman making a
difference in the sports field to encourage Latina students that they can do bigger and better in

the sports work field.
