Developmental Biology
The formation of organs and tissues during development remains a major mystery in biology. The
development of novel tool to follo w organ development in vivo, as well as the availability of full
genome sequences, has allowe d major progress in understanding the complex interplay of
numerous factors in organ formation and function.
Genetics
Genetics have led from single crossing experiments to the understandin g of the molecular basis
of inheritance and the identification of DNA as the hereditary substance. During the last 50 years
genetics has made breath-taking progress; starting with the elucidation of the genetic code, the
development of methods for gen e cloning, and th e decyphering of the entir e genomes of yeast,
worms, flies and man.
Immunology
The cells of the immune system pr otect us against infections by pathogens (bacteria, viruses,
etc.). The mechanisms by w hich these cells conf er this prot ection are the main objective of
Immunology.
Infection Biology
This postgraduate programme in M olecular Biology aims at educating students in the basic
cellular and molecular principles of bacterial infection and pathogenesis. The associated course

Master of Science in Economics, Major in Finance
Course description: Finance is the area of economics that studies investment decisions. These
decisions are fundame ntal to t he well-being of firms and indi viduals. Investment outcomes are
affected by rand omness. Investment decisi ons involve trade-offs between risk and expected
return.
The Master programme in Finance aims to provide in-depth knowledge of professional practice in
financial markets. To achieve these targets a good knowledge of financial theory and quantitative
methods are developed in the first part of the programme. These notions are then applied to the
analysis of curre nt financial prac tices. The eco nomic forces t hat shape the des ign of financial
products and market re gulation are analysed. The processing of financial information and risk
management are given particular attention.
The Master prog ramme includes four semesters of lectures and seminars and an inte rnship. A
thorough understanding of risk is necessary to the g ood management of financial assets.
Therefore the first semester is dedicated to t he economic and statistical foundations of financial
markets and the quantitative disciplines necessary to model them. This knowledge is then applied
to the analysis of financial inst ruments and their markets in the core courses of the second and
third semesters. Because the programme is based on rigorous quantitative methods, students are
required to take the core courses before the y can chose electives. The fi nal thesis should then
show the candidate’s ability to integrate acquired k nowledge in the scient ific analysis of
quantitative finance problems.
The Swiss Finance Institute at the University of Lugano coordinates the Master in Finance. The

Master of Science in Economics, Major in Management
Course description: The MSc in Ma nagement has been designed to provide graduates, from a
wide variety of backgro unds, with the necessa ry tools and skills for understandi ng modern
management, creating the best possible start for a successful career. The Degree provides both
a broad background in management as well as t he opportunity to go i nto more depth in selected
topics by choosing electives. T he programme has theoretical and practical elements, allowing
students to understand the theor y while at the same time being able to a pply the kno wledge to

through the writing of a thesis and a piece of applied or consulting work – the field project– which
is done in groups for a real company.
The goal of the course is to create an underst anding of the manageme nt processes that are the
basis of organizations today. It should also help to develo p the skills necessary to perform
successfully in business organisations from star t-ups to multinational companies, which ar e
reflected in courses like Entrepre neurship and International Business. However, as most tasks in
organisations become increasingly interdisciplinary it is also important to be able to w ork across
traditional areas, which is another sk ill that is actively encouraged wi thin the programme. This is
also reflected in the vari ety of different teaching methods used including lectures, case studies,
group work, games and fieldwork. Ho wever, all teaching methods stress an interactive approach
or dialogue with the students.
The Faculty and the stud ents are an international group, with education a nd work experience
from across the world. T his further increases learning and cultural exchanges, as students also
learn to work effectively with people from different cultures.
The degree has two streams in the fi rst semester. Students with a background in economics or
management will follow a set of courses which ar e designed to further build on these areas .
Students without any background in economics and management w ill follow a set of courses
which provide the understanding and fundamental insight into the management disciplines. From
the second semester the two streams will combi ne and continue to develop new i nsights into
management processes.

Master of Science in Informatics, Major in Distributed Systems
These are all distributed systems and, like t hem, many others are b eing developed and used
pervasively in our modern society. Needless to say, computers and networks play a c entral role
within these systems. Th ey process, store, and transmit informat ion to support a wid e variety of
tasks, ranging from the safety -critical operations of a trans portation system, to the business-
critical functions of a ba nk, to the p erformance-critical computations of the scientific models
studied by physicists or molecular biologists.
The Master of Science in Depe ndable Distributed Systems develops professionals capable of
designing and developing distributed systems. In particular, the emphasis of the design taught is
on dependability, which means that systems are engineered to wi thstand failures of system
components, and to gracefully su stain heavy computations and/or intense communication traffic.
The knowledge and technical expertise acquired in this Master is an ideal b asis for a career as a
system engineer, with employment opportunities in virtual ly any company whose business
depends on computing systems. Moreover, the anal ytical skills that characterise this Master
make up a versatile professional profile, as they are more generally applicable to a range of
diverse problem-solving tasks.
Specifically, the Master of Science in Dependable Distributed Systems provides students with an
in-depth perspective on advanced topics of distributed com puter systems. The pr ogramme

Course description: The last decade has witnes sed a re markable emergence and maturing of
technologies dealing with visual and geometric data. Many methods that were in the domain of
research labs have become classical and standard industrial practice.
Think of Google Goggles (a web service allowing the user to take a street image with a mobile
phone and get information abo ut the depicted ob jects), Google Street View and Microsoft
Photosynth (photo tourism service, based on computer vision algorithms for building 3D models
of cities from very la rge sets of images), Mi crosoft Kinect (a n add-on to Xbox console allowing
gesture-based control, ba sed on co mputer vision technology to scan the 3D scene in r eal time
and pattern recognition algorithms to analyze the gestures), and the movie Avatar (setting a new
standard both in computer graphics realism, but also remarkable for the use of very sophisticated
3D vision technologies during production).
These examples belong to the field of Geometric and Visual Co mputing, dealing with processing
and analyzing visual and geometric in formation. The world w e live in is g eometric, both on the
physical (objects that surround us) and abstract levels (re presentation of data). Hence , diverse
application areas must deal with geometric information.
Geometric and Visual Computing is a combination of computer science (discrete algorithms, data
structures, software engineering), mathematical modeling (theoretical foundations and
computational methods), which are used in the domains of computer graphics, computer vision,
2D and 3D signal processing, and pattern recognition.
The curriculum of the Master in G eometric and Visual Co mputing is based on a synergy
between in computer science, mathe matical models and com putational methods, and domain-
specific curricula in co mputer graphics, computational geometry, computer vision, pattern
recognition, and image processing.
Duration / ECTS: The programme is full time, comprises 120 ECTS a nd stretches ove r 4
semesters.
Language(s): The programme is entirely held in English.
