TEACHING ENGLISH SPEAKING USE SONG AS MEDIA FOR 3rd


GRADE OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN THE DIAMOND COURSE

Abstract: This aim of this research is to know how teaching English speaking used song as
media in young learners especially in 3rd grade in the diamond course. It is discuss what kind
a song is suitable and the implementation song in learning speaking. This researched use
Harmer’s theory where mentioned six aspects. This research has a result that used song as
media is effective to teach the young learners speaking.

INTRODUCTION (will not be included in the published article)


Background of study

Current issue in this era is lack of awareness to choose songs that are
beneficial for children. It is has relation with the parents and the teacher in the school.
The parents also lack of awareness to choose the song while in music industrial
always make songs that do not contain moral values because they just focus on the
tone which is to interested by people so they ignore the moral values of that song. As
far as is known song is the media that easily to give impact positive and negative to
everyone who listen the song. The song also media that always teacher use to teach
their students but here the researcher focus on how to teach speaking in young learner
use song as media.

According to Linse (2005) definition of young learner is the children who has
five and twelve years old. The children who has eight to nine year old in Indonesia
actually called as student in 3rd grade in elementary school. Student who has eight to
nine years old, they are still very active. So to make them attention in the teacher’s
instruction is so difficult. They need a teacher who can teach them interesting and need
some tricks to become interesting. Many aspects to teach them, starts to make them can
reading, writing, listening and speaking. The interesting one here is speaking, we know
that to teach them speak is difficult what else in foreign language like English.

Speaking based on Bailey (2005) that the interaction of speakers to build


meaning with try to speak, try to reserve and to processing the information. So doing
speak will know the meaning of the speakers starts from how produce to speak, the
learners get the idea and the processing make sure not misunderstanding. Other expert
also argue that speaking is one of many skills to produce sound where has a meaning
and make the learner understand (Siahaan, 2013). So everything that out from the
mouth, has a sound and absolutely has a meaning be understood by learners too is
speaking.

Even to make them conducive is difficult, but still has many ways to control
them such as the teacher don’t ever feel tired to make them listen again and again, to
make them try to repeat what the teacher said over times. According to Linse (2005)
children can thought speaking by role-playing because the words can be as a form an
entertainment. So to increase their speaking the teacher can make a role-playing which
is force the student speak. Not only that there are eight techniques to teach them such
as audiolingual method, dialogues, using puppets to introducing the dialogue, fishbowl
technique, communicative language teaching, games, talking and writing box, teaching
pronounciation, and the last is error correction (Linse, 2015). Not only that (Linse,
2015) said that the teacher can teach them with saying finger play, and singing a song
or simple chant with their hand.

Sing a song is one of many tricks to teach them speaking. Through sing a song
it force the students try to follow the teacher’s said but not all song suitable with
teaching process in the school. Based on Linse (2015) song where contain a repetitive
words it is one of many song that suitable to teach young learner. The repetitive here
likes “this is the way we wash our clothes, this is the way we wash our clothes, wash
our clothes” (Linse, 2015). So repetitive word there can make young learner remember
the word that already said. As a teacher do not expect to much to young learner because
when they just get two or three words a day is better than nothing.

After explaining the interesting one, the young learners, the speaking,
techniques, and example one of songs that suitable to teach to young learners. The
researcher here make a conclusion that this study is different with other previous
because here try to discuss about what kind of songs that suitable to kindergarten and
the implementation of the songs to increase speaking skill of kindergarten. So through
this study the next study or teacher can get the description how to teach speaking skill
to 3rd elementary student use song as media.

Research Problem

a. What kind of song is suitable to teach 3rd grade elementary students to


increase their speaking?
b. How implementation song media to increase the speaking skill of 3rd grade
elementary students?

Objectives of The Study

The objectives of this study is to find out the effectiveness song as media in
teaching speaking to young learners and how implementation in the class.

Significance of the study

Hopefully, this study can give some significance of teaching English especially
in speaking skill. So the researcher expected everyone will know how to teach speaking
in 3rd grade elementary students and to know any song that is suitable to increase
speaking skill in 3rd grade elementary students at the course

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

1. Young learners
According to Linse (2005) young learner is the children who has five and twelve
years old. each children who has five until twelve years old, they called it young
learners. based on Pribilova (2006, p.10) Young learner covers a wide range of ages.
This can be anyone from three to eighteen years of age. There's a big difference between
what a -a three-year-old child can do and what a fifteen-year-old child can do. We
should take their development too into account. Many kids develop more easily, others
need more time. Other words pribilova said children has there until eighteen years old
is young learner.
Furthermore, based on Scot and Yteberg (2010, p.18) young learner were
divided into two groups. Level one 5-7 years old and 8-10 years old. it means in young
learner has two groups in learning process, and from those groups the material to teach
them is different. Meanwhile, young learner has a characteristic based on Scot and
yteberg (2010, p.1-2) young learner understand the situation more quickly, their
understanding comes through their hands and eyes and their ears, logical, they have got
a very short span of focus and commitment, troubelling to know the fact and fiction,
they cant decide what to do about themselves, they love to play and when they like
themselves they know best, and the last they rarely admit they don’t know anything.
2. Speaking
According to Siahaan (2008, p.95) Speaking is the process of produce from the
language skill . It means in person where they try to produce the sound and the word
understood by other, so it can called speaking to build a communication with other.
Meanwhile speaking is the process of creating and communicating meaning by using
verbal and non-verbal signs in a variety of contexts (Channery, 1998 p.13). other word
speaking is process to communicate to other with verbal and nonverbal symbols.
3. Teaching speaking to young learner
Teaching speaking to young learner is not easy, because English is not our
native language. As a teacher have to many principles. According to Nunan (2003, p.55-
56) there are four principles first is giving students practice with accuracy and fluency,
second is provide the opport prinsip unity for students to talk, third is teacher should
has planning to speaking in tasks that mentioned negotiation for meaning, the last is
designing the class to make comfort zone to learning speaking.
Furthermore, speaking also not only about oral communication but there are
aspects should following, such as body language, gesture and etc. that explanation
refers to Brown (2007, p. 237) said social contact in interactive language functions is
of key importance, and what counts is not what you say, but how you say what you
convey with body language, gesture, eye contact, physical distance and other nonverbal
messages. Teaching speaking can do in wherever we are especially in classroom. In the
classroom there are many types, but based on Harmer (2001, p.348-352) divided into
six. They are discussion, problem solving, acting from script, communication with
games, giving questions, role play and simulation.

METHOD

Methodology
In this research the researcher used descriptive qualitative. The data here is song
for children. The researcher collect the data used observation. The researcher here is
the main role to collect and analyze the data, and other instrument is laptop where to
found the song through youtube. Observation to observing the skill of students
especially in 3rd grade when a class consist of 5-6 students. It means to know the
achievement in speaking skill in the diamond course..

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

From the observation at three day in the 3rd grade in diamond course there are
three songs used to teach and make students interest. Most of the songs is popular songs,
the lyrics and the music is so easy to follow. They are such as Johny JohnyYes Papa,
Head, Shoulders, Kness and Toes, and The Wheels on The Bus. The implantation of

students briefly to speak to response the song because they know this song before and
other just shy. Then is communication with games, here the teacher give them a song
entitled “Head, Shoulders, Kness and Toes”

a stick, where the stick will later move and if the song is finished then the student will
be told to go forward and lead their friends to sing a the song together again. Here make
students force to speak in front of the class and the teacher repeat it three times. Not
only that giving questions here teacher give them a song again entitled “ the wheels on

teacher give them some question to force them speak and give their opinion. The
question such as have you ever taken a bus? With who? Where? And reveals the
students so active with those question because they once took a bus. Next discussion.
In this part is special because the teacher not give them a song but teacher make them
to discuss about what song they like with their friend and try to speak up in front of the
class. Almost student in this part so excited because they free to express their favorite
song. Then role play and simulation, here the teacher give them a role play, when the
song playing they singing together, and in the middle the song teacher stopped it the
students continue by themselves. The result from this strategy students are so happy
because they like singing and they request again to repeat it the songs.

CONCLUSION(S)

The result from the finding, we know that the young learners especially in 3 rd
grade students in diamond course. Teaching speaking used song as media is effective.
There are three song where popular in this era used. They are Johny JohnyYes Papa,
Head, Shoulders, Kness and Toes, and The Wheels on The Bus. Then from the second
research problem the implementation used Harmer theory is divided into six aspects.
Each aspect has different result while in problem solving four students who active speak
in the class and the other less to speak. In the acting from script, a half of student active
to speak because they already know the songs and they almost memorize about the
songs. Five students in communication with games so active, almost student like songs
and games so they really enjoy it. In giving question, four students are active and during
songs playing these students always good in responses. Not only that, the teacher in
discussion part force them to speak so almost all the students speak up briefly. The last
is role play, all students get funny when did role play and it make songs show the
effectiveness, because the young learner like to singing together.
