ABSTRACTS
When I started art school at Concordia in 2008, I
hated the concept of abstract artwork. I thought that
for art to be good it had to depict something real. At
the time, I felt that artists who could paint, draw, or
sculpt to a photo-realistic perfection were the only
skillful artists.
With this in mind, it was funny that I had grown up

in a household full of not only abstract art but very
minimalist, abstract art - and that appreciation
apparently had not rubbed off on me. Maybe it was
the fact that I was surrounded by it growing up that
caused me to want to reject abstract artwork in the
first place.
Because of how highly I regarded photo-realistic

work, I wanted to be able to produce works with such
skill myself. I would draw and draw and draw, but
become very frustrated fairly quickly. While I could
render the overall movement and composition of a
scene, I had trouble recreating the details - I actually
found it really boring to try and adjust the drawing
this way.
I came to realize that my drawings were more

interesting not just because of the detailed areas I
managed to draft, but also because of the curious,
compositional scribbles and smudges that came out
of the process, and further, how those two very
different elements communicated with each other.
I started to gain an appreciation for the emotional

quality of these kinds of marks and I have come to
understand that it is more important to value how
marks are applied, rather than to be concerned with
the outcome of what the painting/drawing will be.

FIGURATIVE
WORKS
Leading up to the birth of my daughter, I had been
questioning my process and work. I didn't know
quite how I felt about the work I was producing, or
even the work I had produced in the past. I felt lost
and wanting for a change in how I worked.
After my daughter was born it felt like I had

suddenly been thrown into a new need to produce
something different than I had before.
I was a father to a little girl I hadn't ever met, I

thought a lot of people and relationships, how I
would raise my daughter, how I would care for her.
At the time I was reading a book called "The

Dreamers" by Karen Thompson Walker. The book
takes place in a small american town that becomes
the birthplace for a new kind of illness - once an
infected individual falls asleep, they will never wake
up again.
This had become an inspirational tool for me and

was important as a foundation in a transition from
the very abstract and minimalist world into more
figurative pieces.
I produced a series that I named after the book. The

series featured sleeping characters, and beds, and can
be described as peaceful but with sinister undertones.
