DIFENITION OF TERMS
Disaster-is any event that causes a level of destruction, death or injury that affects the abilities of the community to respond to the incident using available resources. (Famorca)
-is a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society involving widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses and impacts, which exceeds the
ability of the affected community or society to cope using it’s own resources. (National Disaster Response Plan)
Disaster Risk- is describes by RA 10121, as the potential disaster losses in lives, health status, livelihoon, assets and services which could occur to a particular community or a society
over some specified future time period. (NDRP)
Disaster Risk Reduction Management-the systematic process of using administrative directives, organization and operational skills and capacities to implement strategies, policies, and
improved coping capacities in order to lessen the adverse impacts of hazards and the possibility of disaster. (NDRP)
Disaster Awareness-the state of being aware or having a knowledge concerning any disaster that may happen within the community.
Disaster Preparedness-the state of being prepared physically and mentally concerning any disaster that may happen within the community.
Natural disasters- is an act of nature of such magnitude as to create a catastrophic situation in which the day-to-day patterns of life are suddenly disrupted and people are plunged into
helplessness and suffering, and as a result, need food, clothing, shelter, medical and nursing care and other necessities of life and protection against unfavourable environmental factors
and conditions. (WHO)
Man-made Disasters- are type of disasters that arise from man-made hazards, that is, hazards caused by human action or inaction. (IORA/WHB)
Hazard- a dangerous phenomenon, substance, human activity or condition that may cause loss of life, injury, or other health impacts, property damages, loss of livelihood and services,
social and economic disruption, or environmental damage. (NDRP)
Internet-A global system of interconnected computer networks that use the internet protocol suite to link devices worldwide.
Social Media- is a way to transmit, or share information with a broad audience.
Evacuation Areas- are usually large facilities that can accommodate people in transition due to an emergency. Often they are in school gyms, churches, or other community buildings that
have room for people to sleep, usually on cots, and have adequate bathroom facilities.
