SPELLING BEE COMPETITION MECHANICS

DETAILED MECHANICS:
1. The contest is open to all students - who are enrolled in GECC or General Education
Core Curriculum under Arts and Sciences
2. The organizing committee will provide all the materials needed. A tag board, eraser,
and writing material for the contestants.
3. The contest is divided into two (2) categories: INDIVIDUAL and GROUP. There are
three (3) rounds: EASY, AVERAGE, and DIFFICULT round.
Note: The clincher round only takes place if there is a tie in the final round.

4. There will be five (5) words to be spelled in each round with the correspond point(s):
1 point for the EASY round, 2 points for the AVERAGE round, 3 points for the
DIFFICULT round, and 1 point for the CLINCHER round.
5. All letters must be written in block or capital letters neatly and legibly.
6. Erasures are not allowed. If the contestant wishes to change his/her answer, he/she
must cross out his/her first answer and write the word anew.
7. The Bee Master will read the word, its definition, etymology, and a sample sentence
containing the word twice.
8. The Bee Master will say the word “Go” and only then the ten (10) seconds time limit
will begin. After the time limit and buzzer sound, the contestant will automatically
stop writing. The contestants should raise his/her answer and the correct word will be
flashed on the screen.

9. Any protest or appeals regarding the preceding question will be entertained before the
Bee Master proceed to the next word.
10. Coaching from the audiences is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
11. The committee and the judges have the right to disqualify any contestant who will
violate the rules of the contest.
12. To determine the winners for GROUP category, all the points earned by the
contestants representing their respective group will be added. The three (3) highest
scorer will be declared as follows: 2nd, 1st Place and Spelling Bee Champion.
13. For the individual category, the highest scorer will be declared as follows: 2 nd, 1st
place and Spelling Bee Champion
14. All winners from the GROUP and INDIVIDUAL category will receive a Certificate
of Recognition and a cash prize.
15. The decision of the board of judges is final and irrevocable.
