Background of the Study


As Senior High School students taking STEM as a strand in Saint Joseph School, many would

have already wondered what if we might be able to take OJT in our next school year? Would this

have significant effect/s to the students’ future career. Does OJT give more practical working

experience? Would I really need it or not? These are just some of the common yet rhetorical

questions that most STEM students have in mind. In Saint Joseph School, only ABM students are

able to experience OJT; being exposed to a workplace-gaining experience. For students, this is one

of the most useful exposure to everyday workplace scenarios and exposure. In that way, we are

able to get an idea on how it actually feels like in a workplace.

Sadly, here in Saint Joseph School, Naga City, only ABM students have OJT in their

second and final year of Senior High School. For us STEM students however does not have OJT

in our next year. This is somewhat a kind of a disadvantage because we do not gain any work

experience when we go to our respective workplace that may possibly reflect upon our future

careers.Ever since the school year 2016-2017, when the first enrollees for Grade 11 became Grade

12, ABM students was then experienced OJT up to this date. So us STEM students have no real

work experience that we can prepare for our future careers.

According to the ‘Effectiveness of Practicum Program of Tourism Students in Lyceum of

the Philippines University-Batangas’ (A. Ylagan , J. Apritado, A. Mendoza Ma. Tamayo, 2012),

it says in their results that most of their students were enrolled in a Practicum Program overseas in

tourism; resulting in giving them more work experience and says that it increased their chances of

being hired in a job if you had past work experience giving advantage over people without past

work experience
.

In another study of Klausewitz on ‘How prior life experiences influence teaching: Multiple

case studies of mature age elementary student teachers’(n.d), it also make students become more

mature because of the work place environment the students are able to mature faster making them

prepared for the future.

Just like we have mentioned, students who had experienced OJT have an advantage over

those who had not. The SJS Admin also offer OJT to their SHS STEM students in order to get as

much experience to prepare for future careers and such. That’s why early workplace exposure to

students would give them much better experience to develop that goes into workplaces.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to be able to pursue and promote the presence of OJT in senior

high school students of St. Joseph school, Naga City. STEM is considered to be one of the most
chosen curriculum in which a Senior High School Students mostly focus on the fields of Science,

Technology, Engineering and mathematics. What urged us to focus on this research is because of

STEM students like us that are mostly focused on academics rather than the Real life Application

or On-the-job training. Through this research we aim to further seek answers for the following

questions:

• How will DepEd help implement OJT to STEM Students?

• What are the possible demands in order for the administration to implement OJT

for SHS STEM students?

• What are the possible effects of OJT to SHS STEM students?

• How will the students disposition be able to contribute to a certain workplace?

• How will OJT affect the students’ schedule?

Significance of the Study

The outcome that we have concluded in this research will help the school administrators

reconsider on adjusting the Senior High School program for STEM students to be able to immerse

themselves given a particular workplace. In addition to the Senior High School program, the SHS
community will have to encounter real-life challenges that may occur in any given situations

especially in a working environment. According to Connor Sephton(n.d), OJT training will help

students to have a stable and fulfilling career since the student can adapt easily towards his or her

environment. Also hands-on experience is one of the techniques students learn easily in. This

offers students the chance to work on their own and experiment a little on what to do next, which

is through experience the student will have a mastery in his /her own field. This study would give

various benefits to the following agents:

• STEM students- for the students to have more experience and for them to easily be ready

to adapt to the environment they are about to take in college.

• SHS Admin- for them to effectively increase the students knowledge in the field they are

undergoing.

• Professionals- for them to further continue this research and widen the chance of having a

more wide range of solutions

• DepED- for the availability of SHS STEM students be applied to schools in the whole

schools of the Philippines.

Scope and delimitation

The things or people involved in our study would be the SHS STEM and ABM students in

Saint Joseph School Naga City. We would also like to include in our study the Saint Joseph School

Administration together with the business-company partners of the school wherein OJT would be
conducted. Lastly DepEd would be involved in discerning possible plans and its corresponding

concerns following through what is based on the K-12 curriculum.

First, the students, particularly, the Senior High School level, will be involved in the study

because they are the ones who would be affected by OJT first hand so both STEM and ABM are

gonna be thoroughly involved in our paper. Second, the Saint Joseph School Administration

because they are the ones who fully implemented OJT for the Grade 12 STEM curriculum and

school policies for STEM students. Next would be the business partners of the school and its

establishment whereas students would do their OJT for the school to find a legitimate workplace

for students. Lastly, DepEd would be involved because they also have policies regarding to OJT

for senior high school students as well as help Saint Joseph School to be able to apply OJT for

STEM students in Saint Joseph School Naga City.

Now like I said all of these people would be involved in our study. For the reason that they

all have a role to play in order to get OJT implemented in Saint Joseph School for the STEM

students. These people are our population in our research paper. So it is crucial for them to be

interviewed and such to get the needed data for our study.
