On The Road: Addressing Traffic Congestion in Manila

I. In order to reduce the number of vehicles in major roads, a new number coding scheme

must be implemented.

II. The government should conduct a data analysis for the number of vehicles passing through

major roads.

1. Data analysis will enable the government to identify which ending number in

vehicle plates are most frequent in certain days.

2. This will help in balancing the number of vehicles currently passing through

preventing going beyond the carrying capacity of major highways and roads.

3. The government will also be able to legislate and implement an effective law

regarding the number coding scheme.

III. A stricter processing of custom registration plates should be done.

1. In Dubai, regular custom registration plates cost 5,000 AED (71,000 PHP).

2. Special custom plates are auctioned and the part of the auction sale is donated to

charity.

IV. The government should implement effective and efficient plate recognition systems to

easily fine and apprehend vehicles not following the coding scheme.

1. The use of algorithms enables quick and accurate image capturing of registration

plates.

2. More traffic cameras should be installed along main roads and highways.
