Procedures

Attention-getting procedures
The attention getter procedures vary due to the lessons and activities the students are doing in the
class room. The class room has a very high echo. I find that listing the time and activities on the
board help the students to get into focus and they know what the expectations are during that
classroom time.

When students are focused on work especially when it is group work. Before the activity is
started I give them a time of when I will stop students from activity for discussions and or to
close off on the subject task. I do announce that if no one is paying attention and continues to
have discussions I will say in my teacher’s voice. Mac and cheese, everybody freeze.” That
means students freeze where they are and to listen to directions of what needs to be done.

In health science if it is an outdoor activity where students are working on their physical well-
being I will have a whistle with me and once they hear that whistle the class has to circle me and
get directions of what needs to be done.

These attention getter procedures have worked well for the two weeks I have been in the
classroom.

Question-answering procedures

 require students to raise their hands,

 ask students to jot questions during the lesson;
 provide them designated time to ask questions during class,
 create a "parking lot" or area where students can post questions;
 have office hours before and/or after school when students know that they can come for
help.
 Let students know the hours when you are free. These hours are before classes begin in
the morning and at lunch time. Usually students are in home rooms after they have lunch
and this gives them time to ask questions.

Transition Procedures
What routines will you establish around the…

Bell schedule:
Start of class: All Students must be in their seats and ready for attendance. Attendance is
taken right after the bell rings. Before the bell goes off I am at door welcoming students
to class.
Start of day: All Students are at front of school helping themselves to breakfast and
going straight to their home rooms to eat.
End of class: All Students are required to be in their seats and leave only when the
teacher excuses them.
End of day: All Students are required to go to locker and take what they need for home.
Teachers are out at busses supervising all students and are designated to a bus.
Change of activities: Use attention grabber activities.
Change of subjects: Use introduction of subjects and or units when subjects change.
Students know that when a new unit is in place by ending units with an exam and or quiz.
The KWL chart is handy. It helps teachers learn about what they know about the unit and
or subject.
Distribution of materials: Students are given activities and or course material after
introduction to a unit and or a lecture. Once lecture is done the activity is handed out by
teacher who usually hands it to the students in the first row and they hand the rest out to
the students behind them. When Students are done with activities and or work sheets
they are required to put the material in the labelled basket for that class.
Accessing of equipment:
Classroom clean up: 5 minutes before the bell rings students have 1 min to clean up.
When done they are seated in their seats. This allows questions and answers and also
closure.
Daily and Safety Procedures
What will you expect of your students and yourself with regard to:

Late arrivals: Students are required to sign in at front office. Late arrivals are required to
come into class respectably by not distracting class.
Absences: Students attendance is takin each and every day especially with each subject
class. If students are absent for more than three days with no message from a parent then
a phone call will be made to check on the student.
Use of cell phones and other communications technology: Cell phones and or technology
is not allowed in school. One of the school rules. If it is an absolute emergency student
can reach out to the teacher and use classroom phone.
Bathroom breaks: A hall pass is required during class time. Students are reminded to use
washroom during breaks before class and or after class. They can use the hall pass. If hall
pass is not available they must wait until it is.
Pencil sharpening: Pencil sharpening can only be used after instructions are explained by
teacher.
Student telephone calls to home: Emergency situations only.
Individual seatwork: Students have the freedom to sit where they want. But, if problems
students are not listening and or are causing a disruption to class they will be asked to
move.
Playground and free time rules: Playgrounds are not allowed for grade 8 students. This is
school rules. They must be in home rooms.
Late homework or assignments: Late home-work is not deducted but will have an impact
on grade if not handed in. Grade will be a zero. If student is absent they must see the
teacher for missed work and catch up during homeroom time and or lunch.
Missing homework or assignments: Missed assignments can be found at front of table for
math. And or on the side table for science and health. Students are required to look
through and talk with teacher for instructions. A sample binder is also available for
students to have access to.
Homework reminders: If homework is sent home students are required to bring in the
next day. If situations arise with late assignments and or homework. It is required that
student must get it done before any sports and extracurricular activity.
Student illness or injury: A parent must phone in if a student is Ill so students can have an
excused absence. If an injury happens during school follow the procedures in the student
parent handbook that is handed in by administration. Injury’s should be reported to the
parents.
Fire drills: The emergency plan is located by door. Students exit by the left closest
emergency by pod three and is required to meet by Green house for attendance.
Lockdowns: Every student must know the lockdown procedure at the school. The
students are asked to go to the nearest classroom if the lockdown happens during break.
If a lockdown happens during classroom time all students must go to the corner of the
room farthest from door and sit very quiet. No phones. The only time a class is freed is if
the class is excused from a police officer.

Positive Relationships

Quickly establish a class list and seating plan so that you can begin to learn the names of your
students. What seating arrangement are you planning and how will you decide who sits where?

Desks are in rows of five with four desks following after.

Begin recording student interests. What system will you use to do this? Journal writing, class
discussion during homeroom. Formative and summative accesments.

What specific things will you do the first day and first week to encourage student-with-teacher
and student-with-student interactions? At first of the week during homeroom in the morning. I
will lead the discussion of having students share what they did on their weekend. I will greet
students at the door when coming into class and also if students are early having conversations
with the students about how they are doing.
What body language and tone of voice will you use in different situations throughout the day ~ at
the start of class, with large and small group instruction, and when dealing with inappropriate
behaviour?
Interventions

Classroom Rules
Record the rules you will establish, whether alone or with your students, and list a few possible
consequences if a rule is not followed. It’s good to have student input but be sure to cover all of
the important areas. With consequences, it’s better to rehearse a few ideas than to think them up
on the spot.

Rule: Respect each other

Consequences:

Rule: Use washroom on breaks. If it is an emergency use hallway pass.

Consequences:

Rule: No hats allowed and or cell phones

Consequences: If you break rule once you get warning. If you break rule twice, teacher takes it
till end of day. If you break it three times it is given to administration and parent must sign it out.

Rule: Three A’s Attitude, Attendance, Academics

Consequences: Follow this rule students get an incentive at the end of the year.

Strategies
Record your strategies for dealing with some common student misbehaviours.

Distracted (ex. by cellphone or spinner): Not allowed in school.

Talking: If student is talking during class and being disruptive they will be reminded of
rules. If talking continues they will be asked to sit in front of room at front desk.
Off task: A simple tap on desk and or asking student if they are having trouble with the
assignment.
Name calling: Reminded of class room rule. Respect each other.
Pushing and shoving: If pushing and shoving call out students name and remind them
it’s not allowed in class and or in hallways.
Running in classrooms or in hallways: Call out student and remind them of school rule.
Swearing: Remind student that vulgure language is not accepted in school. If reminded
again teacher will notify parents. The third one student is required to go down to the
principal’s office.
Copying someone else’s work:
Taking things that don’t belong to them: Students are reminded of nitsitapii values and
the main one is respecting other people’s belongings. Students are required not to share
information on their locker code.
Writing or scratching on desks, furniture, lockers, or walls: Students are stopped
immediately and are asked to clean the area they damage.
Fighting: principles office!!
