Performing online research is a learned skill that requires specialized training and industry recognition of
a full-time profession.
The Association of Internet Research Specialists (AIRS) have dedicated an education program that provides
training material and a certification examination to address this dynamic job description of Internet
Research Specialist. It is now required that professional researchers owe it to themselves to seek
structured certification programs and stay in touch as new materials and new tools transform research
problems from very difficult or impossible to quick and simple tasks by getting involved in a more
centralized way through associations such as AIRS.

INTRODUCTION TO CIRS SYLLABUS & EXAM PREPARATION 2019

Preparing for the Exam

Estimated Effort: 8-10 hours per week over six weeks

The CIRS Candidates are evaluated on their relevant knowledge gained through the course
workbook (AIRS CIRS Training Workbook) and Practice Exams. The exam consists of 4 parts. Each
part will have a traditional multiple-choice, true/false, and fill in the blank questions. The
questions are randomly pulled from a master list of questions. The certification candidate has 1.5
hours to complete the exam. The exam is available through online access 24x7 anywhere in the
world.
The CIRS certification program requires proper preparation because of the extensiveness of the
course material and because of the way these exams are conducted and proctored.
The testing platform is inherently plagiarism proof and online proctored, so there is no chance of
getting any outside assistance or using the self-help notes during the exam. The questions are
timed, and you will have to answer each question quickly.
Preparing for the exams requires a disciplined approach to commit time and execute exam
preparation strategy. Here are some suggestions to go by:

• Download the latest version of the CIRS Examination Workbook and review the entire
content carefully. The workbook should be the focal point of your preparation. It is the core
document used as the basis for each examination and a guideline for writing the exam.

• The workbook is designed for self-paced learning in easy English/French with practice
exercises. These questions are very similar in both format and type to the actual CIRS
Examinations.

• Also, make sure you are familiar with all of the acronyms used in the examinations. A glossary
of terms and essential definitions are also included in the workbook.

• The workbook is divided into four modules, and each module has separate sections/headings.
The workbook is designed to manage the flow of information in a sequence of modules and
the headings within. It is strongly recommended that the user follows them in the same
order.
INTRODUCTION TO CIRS SYLLABUS & EXAM PREPARATION 2019

• As in any professional exams, CIRS preparation requires planning in terms of time needed
and practice. An excellent self-study program demands discipline and commitment. The best
study program is the one that you can follow.

• Review the CIRS examination content outlines, which list the main and subtopics covered in
each examination.

• Some candidates find the study guide to be sufficient in their preparation, while, some
individuals may need to go beyond the study guides and review additional materials. Assess
your ability and understand there is no "one-size-fits-all" approach to studying for the CIRS
Examination.

• Candidates need to consider their learning preferences, prior knowledge, experience, time,
and budget in determining the best way to prepare.

• Request a mentor if you need further guidance. Email education@airsassociation.org

• Attempt sample examination questions on our website. These questions are frequently
updated for test practice.

INTRODUCTION TO CIRS SYLLABUS & EXAM PREPARATION 2019

Before using the Workbook

1. Give yourself enough time to study the CIRS Training Manual. Prepare a timetable for studying
and a target date to appear for the exam.
2. Organize your study space and be prepared to take notes.
3. Attempt practice exam from each module at a time. Avoid jumping on to the next before gaining
proficiency in answering the questions. All sample tests rotate questions from a large pool in
each section. For example, if you are given a restricted number of 20 questions in Module, I
appear at random from the pool of [60] questions in the database. Same way, in Module II, a
total of 40 questions appear at random from the pool of [120] questions. [See below]

Module I ……………………………………………………. 20 [60]

Module II …………………………………………………… 40 [120]
Module III …………………………………………………. 20 [60]
Module IV …………………………………………………. 20 [60]

4. Pay attention to the flowcharts and diagrams.

5. Try group study if you get bored easily – discuss questions and explain answers to others.
6. Do take in between breaks and treat yourself with things you like to do as a reward.

When attempting the Workbook Questions

1. Select a single answer unless explicitly mentioned for more than one choice.
2. Read questions carefully before answering.
3. Time yourself for each question you attempt.
4. Questions may be different in the CIRS exam but will revolve around the same subject, topic,
and pattern that these questions exhibit.
5. Practice as much as you can on building queries and use of operators, symbols, and notations
to gain command on using precision search.
6. Where find ambiguity or incomplete information within the manual, try finding more
information on the Internet or reference library resources. Remember, the manual is meant to
provide you the direction on what are the essential elements of this course. It is no way a
guarantee that the content in it is complete or self-explanatory in its entirety.
7. Do not accept the suggested answers to the question you attempt on their face value;
investigate more on why the answer is what it says it is. Cross check the manual. Find out more
information on the topic you feel that you lack conceptual understanding.
