Celebrate in
five-star style
at a house fit
for royalty
refurbished Castleton house oozes
luxury, discovered brendan croft

lamis is best known for its
castle, the former home of the
Queen Mother – and nearby
Castleton House could also be
fit for royalty.
The former hotel is an Edwardian
sandstone mansion with a cottage
attached, meaning a total of nine
bedrooms suitable for up to 20 guests. It
would be an ideal venue for a large
family get-together or lavish celebration.
With its own eight-acre private
grounds and car park, the house is well
away from the road and offers privacy
and peace.
As attractive as the building is, the
really impressive part comes when you
step inside. The owners have done an
incredible job during the recent
renovation with every surface decorated
or furnished to the highest degree, and a
match for any five-star hotel.
There is an eclectic mix of modern art,
deep-pile carpets, new and antique
furniture and decorative wallpaper on
display in every room, with every section
of the house a delight to pore over.
Each bedroom is slightly different in
style but all feature huge, luxurious
beds. The en suites have a variety of
slipper and whirlpool baths and walk-in
rain showers, with added funky lighting.
There are several sitting rooms,
making it easy for larger groups to split
up and do their own thing. Large-screen
TVs are fitted throughout the house, as

well as an excellent sound system, and a
number of open fires keep the place
cosy. There is also a small champagne
room for extra privacy.
The huge kitchen in the main house
has everything you could want to cater
for a large group, and the grand dining
room means you can have dinner in
style. Our favourite, however, was the
games room, which has a billiards table
and was a great place to hang out.
Despite the impressive interior we
spent much of our visit outside at the
barbecue. There are two hot tubs and
our children loved the Hobbit Hut, a
wooden hexagon at the end of the
garden where we cooked burgers and
smores on the open fire.
As well as the aforementioned Glamis
Castle, there are plenty of day trip
activities close by. Golfers have a choice
of courses at nearby Alyth, Forfar and
the charming town of Kirriemuir, which
is the birthplace of Peter Pan author JM
Barrie. The house in which he grew up is
now a museum.
We opted for Camperdown Park, 20
minutes drive away on the outskirts of
Dundee, which is a great place for
families with young children. On a cold
November night, the open fire at
Castleton helped round off the trip.
