Chapter I

The Problem and Its Background

I. Introduction

The problem in apprehending text is not new to us, every individuals especially

learners are facing difficulties when it comes in understanding a text. Reading is the

complex cognitive process of decoding symbols to derive meaning. It is a form of

language processing. Reading is making meaning from printed materials it requires that

we identify the words in print, construct an understanding from them, and coordinate

identifying words and making meaning so that reading is automatic and accurate.

Comprehension is the act of making sense or constructing meaning in text. If the learners

struggling in reading comprehension it will affects the learner’s ability to understand the

meaning of the words and passages. Students with this issue may also struggle with basic

reading skills such us decoding words, but comprehension is the greater weakness. Here

are just a few reasons why learners find it hard to understand what they are reading.

Reading comprehension involves factors such as background knowledge, vocabulary,

fluency and others. There’s a lot of factors to be considered in reading comprehension

that learners should overcome.

Why do we conduct this study even though there’s a numerous related

research about this? Since this problem is phenomenological the researcher wanted to

convey that this problem specifically in the process of learning is a big barriers, why? Most

of the students know how to read they can read aloud with little or no difficulty pronouncing

words but they do not understand or remember what they’ve read. Therefore, we need to
know what are the weaknesses of the learners in terms of understanding a text so that

we can develop material that well help our learners to increase their reading

comprehension.

II. Statement of the Problem

The study aimed to know what are the factors affecting the reading

comprehension of Grade 7 learners: basis enhancement materials: Specifically, it aims

to answer the following questions:

1. What is the level of reading comprehension in three consecutive years?

2. What are the factors affecting the reading comprehension of Grade-7 as perceive

by the respondents?

3. Based on the level of the reading comprehension of Grade-7 learners what reading

enhancement material maybe propose?

4. How acceptable the reading enhancement material?

III. Significance of the Study

The importance of this research study is to provide awareness on what are the

reason behind the difficulty facing by the learners when it comes in reading a certain text.

It will serve as a guide for the learners, teachers, parents to enhance the reading ability.

It will be a great contribution in the intended audience which are listed below:
Learners

They are the one who will benefit this research study especially in enhancing their

reading comprehension. This would help the learners to know their weaknesses when it

comes in understanding of what they are reading.

Teachers

This study may help the teachers to know what are the weaknesses of the

learners in term of reading comprehension and what are the enhancement materials that

needed to be develop in helping the learners to level up their comprehension.

Parents

This study would help the parents to encourage their children to read more and

enhance their reading style and strategies to apprehend a text. They can also work

together with their children to guide and to support.

Future Researchers

This study could serve as encouragement for other researchers to find out what

can be the possible problem of the learners when it comes in reading understanding and

what are the materials that should develop to improve the reading comprehension of the

learners.
IV. Scope and limitation

The main focus of this study is to find out what are the Factors Affecting the

Reading Comprehension of Grade-7 Learners at Bacoor National High-School and what

enhancement material will use to fill the gap in this study.

The respondents of this study were twenty five (25) grade-7 learners section

rose.

V. Definition of terms

In order for the readers to understand the study the following terms would be

defined as they used in the study:

Comprehension- is the complex cognitive process involving the intentional interaction

between reading and text to extract meaning.

Decoding -is the translation of a message that is easily understood. Decoding a

message, the extract meaning of that message in ways that make sense.

Enhancement material- refers to a subset of the book, games, Internet, and software

publishing industries that is focused on providing resources to a variety of educational

market segments

Reading- is a dynamic process in which the reader interacts with the text to create

meaning.

Reading comprehension- is the act of understanding what you are reading
