Need of the Study

Both developing and developed countries are facing serious

environmental problems. While some of the problems might be alike due to
their global nature (e.g. global warming, depletion of the ozone layer), others
are specifically local ones. The environment is very important not only for the
present generation but also for the future generations. If we exploit the
environment in the extreme ways, even though we may get some money or
other benefit from it now, in the long run we ourselves suffer and future
generations will also suffer. The abuse of environment which has resulted in
such harm to human community arose out of ignorance of importance of
environment. Environment of course is all the factors living and non-living that
actually affect on individual organism or population at any point in the life
cycle. Therefore, students must have consciousness about environment and its
related problems so for that they can play a vital role in sustainable
development and in managing environment.

Although a number of studies have been conducted about the

environmental awareness, social awareness and social responsibility (Moyer
1977; Hart and Mc Claren 1978; Jehan 1988; Shahnawaj 1990; Mutalik 1991;
Sinha 1992; Rana and Singh, 1997; Bharti 2002; Mary, Sahaya and Paul 2005;
Rout and Agarwal 2006; Gihar 2006; Pandey 2007; Sarala T. 2008; Vijaya
Kumari, S.N. 2008; Jayanta Mete and Shyamsundar 2009; etc.). The major
variables of these studies were identified as environmental awareness,
environmental attitude, environmental responsibility, environmental
conservation, scientific attitude, social interest, social mobility, social change,
occupational mobility, social responsibility, social sensitivity etc. There is only
one study (Bharti 2002) available on the relationship between environmental
awareness and scientific attitude among the higher Educationstudents.
However, none of the above studies considered about environmental
awareness in relation to awareness towards social duty among higher
Education students.

2.0 Research Questions :

The following are the main research questions:

1. How is environmental awareness affected by educational variables (grade,
course of study, type of institution, parent’s education) and demographic
variables (sex, caste, religion, type of family, locale, parent’s occupation)?
2. What is the relationship between environmental awareness and awareness
towards social duty?
3. Up-to what extent, the environmental awareness may be predicted by some
demographic, educational and awareness towards social duty?
Keeping the aforesaid issues in the mind and to explore the relationship
between environmental awareness and awareness towards social duty, the
researcher has proposed the following problem for the intensive and detailed
study.

3.0 Statement of the Problem :

It has been stated as “A study of environmental awareness in relation to

awareness towards social duty among higher Educationstudents”.

4.0 Operational Definition of Important Terms :

4.1 Environmental Awareness : It is defined as student’s ability to help the

social groups and individuals to gain a variety of experiences and acquire the
basic understanding of environment and its associated problems. Investigator
himself constructed the tool to measure environmental awareness. The scores
obtained on the prepared tool were considered as environmental awareness
scores of higher Education students.

4.2 Awareness towards Social Duty : A sense of belongingness towards

fulfillment of duties expected to be performed being a member of a particular
society. These duties may be towards family, community, orphan and helpless
persons, social institutions etc. A tool was constructed taking above dimension
of social duties. The scores obtained on the tool were considered as awareness
of social duty scores among higher Education students.

4.3 Higher Education Students (H.E.S. ): Students studying in class/standard

B.A, B.Sc, B.Com, and B.Ed. students which are taken by different ug and pg
college in Varanasi

5.0 Main Objectives of the Study :

Following are the objectives of the study:

1. To study environmental awareness among higher Education students and

factors affecting it.
2. To study the awareness towards social duty among higher Education
students and factors affecting it.
3. To predict the environmental awareness among higher Education students
with the help of awareness of social duty, educational and demographic
variables.
5.1 Concomitant Objectives of the Study :

1. To construct a tool to assess the environmental awareness among higher

Education students.
2. To construct a tool to assess the awareness towards social duty among
higher Education students.
6.0 Assumptions of the Study :

Assumption has been made to explore the status of environmental

awareness and awareness towards social duty of higher Education students.
Higher Education students possess an identifiable and measurable degree of
environmental awareness and awareness towards social duty. The status of
environmental awareness and awareness towards social duty will also vary on
the basis of selected environmental and demographic variable of the study.

6.1 Research Hypotheses of the Study :

The following were the research hypotheses of the study.

HR1 – The educational variables affect the environmental awareness of higher

Education students.

HR2 –The demographic variables affect the environmental awareness of higher

Education students.

HR3 – Aforesaid educational and demographic variables affect the awareness

towards social duty of higher Education students.

HR4 – A subset of educational, demographic and awareness towards social

duty affect the environmental awareness among higher Education students.

6.2 Null Hypotheses of the Study :

Following are the null hypotheses formulated at 0.05 level of significant
to achieve objectives of the study –

Ho1 – There is no significant difference among the mean environmental

awareness scores of students with regard to: (a) Grade, (b) Course of study, (c)
type of institution, (d) Parent’s education, (e) Sex, (f) Caste, (g) Religion, (h)
Type of family, (i) Locale, (j) Parent’s occupation.

Ho2 – There is no significant difference among the mean awareness towards

social duty scores of students with regard to: (a) Grade, (b) Course of study, (c)
type of institution, (d) Parent’s education, (e) Sex, (f) Caste, (g) Religion, (h)
Type of family, (i) Locale, (j) Parent’s occupation.

Ho3 – There is no significant correlation between the environmental awareness

and awareness towards social duty among the higher Education students.

7.0 Method of the Study :

The descriptive survey method was used in this research study.

7.1 Population of the Study :

Students studying in the B.A. BSc.B.Com. and B.Ed. belonging to Arts and
Science disciplines of higher Education Affiliated college by Mahtma Gandhi
kasha vidyapeeth Varanasi.U.P Varanasi city constituted the population of the
study.

7.2 Sample and Sampling Technique of the Study :

Sample of the study consisted of 308 higher Education students of B.A.

BSc.B.Com. and B.Ed.affiliated to m.k.v.p university varanasi. The male and
female students having rural and urban background were also included in the
study. The members of the sample were selected by cluster random sampling
technique.

7.3 Tools Used in the Study :

Following tools were used for the data collection.

1. Paryavaraniya Jagarukata Prashnawali (PJP).

2. Samajik Kartavya Jagarukata Prashnwali (SKJP).
Both tools were constructed by researcher himself. Reliability of the first
tool ‘PJP’ was found to be 0.76 by the split-half method. Content and intrinsic
validity were found out. Reliability of the second tool ‘SKJP’ was found to be
0.85 by split-half method. Content and intrinsic validity were found out.

7.4 Data Analysis :

SPSS package was used to analyze the data. In addition to general

descriptive statistical analyses of mean, standard deviation, t-test and one way
analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to compare the means of various
responses and to test whether their differences were statistically significant at
the 0.05 level. Regression analysis has also been performance among
environmental awareness and awareness towards social duty to account the
effects of independent variable for the environmental awareness.

11.0 Delimitations of the Study :

This study has been delimited along following considerations:

1. This study has been confined to Varanasi district only.

2. The study has been delimited by the choice of educational and demographic
variables only.
3. Only Regular higher Education students were considered for the study.
