THE MERTAPHORS
T
he word of God contains a lot of metaphors. In
this book we are going to examine some of these
metaphors for purposes of enlightenment. The
metaphors are used to establish a better understanding
of God’s word in our lives.
They are many times that the word of God states things
metaphorically with the goal of enhancing our
understanding of certain principles. The Lord Jesus is
called the Lion of the tribe of Judah, which doesn’t
mean He is an actual lion. The Bible is showing us that
the characteristics of the lion are the ones at work in
Jesus.
John 1:31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made
manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
John 1:32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit
descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
5
The Spirit descended like a dove, though the spirit is
not a dove. The dove represented the Holy Spirit in the
sense that the dove has nine feathers on both wings and
five feathers on its tail. The five feathers on a dove’s tail
represent the five-fold ministry; the nine feathers on the
right wing represent the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit
while and the nine feathers on the left wing represent
the beatitudes. The two feet represent both the Old and
New Testament.
The Lord Jesus is said to be the lion and the lamb in the
Bible, because He has the characteristics of both of those
two animals at work in Him.
Revelations 5:5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep
not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David,
hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals
thereof.
Revelations 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the
throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders,
stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and
seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into
all the earth.
6
Mat 13:31 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying,
The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed,
which a man took, and sowed in his field:
Mat 13:32 Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it
is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree,
so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches
thereof.
Mat 13:33 Another parable spake he unto them; The
kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took,
and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was
leavened.
In the realm of the Spirit there are things that exist but
cannot be expressed in the physical realm therefore
they are represented by things that exhibit their
characters.

CHAPTER TWO

THE SEAS
T
he Sea is not just the water lodged in a place. The
sea is constituted by the water and the creatures
therein.
Genesis 1:9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven
be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land
appear: and it was so.
Genesis 1:10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the
gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw
that it was good.
And,
9
Revelations 17:15 And he saith unto me, The waters which
thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and
multitudes, and nations, and tongues.
The sea was created by God and He has rule over it.
The Bible also speaks of the sea as a barrier.
Throughout the Bible bodies of water are often a barrier
to a blessing. God had to split the Red sea to free the
Israelites from slavery.
Exodus 14:21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the
sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east
wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the
waters were divided.
Exodus 14:22 And the children of Israel went into the midst
of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall
unto them on their right hand, and on their left.
Joshua 3:15 And as they that bare the ark were come unto
Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were
dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his
banks all the time of harvest,)
10
Joshua 3:16 That the waters which came down from above
stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam,
that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the
sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and
the people passed over right against Jericho.
Isaiah 51:10 Art thou not it which hath dried the sea, the
waters of the great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea
a way for the ransomed to pass over?
11
The sea has a lot of things within it, including monsters
and creatures of the dark side. The sea, or rather water
bodies, such as lakes, rivers and oceans also symbolize
death, evil and chaos.
Isaiah 57:20 But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when
it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt
Revelations 13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and
saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten
12
horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads
the name of blasphemy.
Revelations 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a
leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth
as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power,
and his seat, and great authority.
Revelations 13:3 And I saw one of his heads as it were
wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all
the world wondered after the beast.
There are beasts of the sea that are out to destroy lives.
13
in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus
unto it, Arise, devour much flesh.
The lion was coming from the sea therefore it was a sea
lion. A lion symbolizes strength, power and a sea is a
symbol of death, chaos, evil and people. A sea lion is a
metaphor for the power of evil. A sea-lion speaks of
demonic forces that have the power and strength to
cause death and evil. This is why in John’s revelation of
the new heaven and earth, the sea did not exist.
14
This meant death and evil forces will no longer exist in
this new earth.
15
Horses represent vain power, pride and boastfulness –
which are things that are not founded on righteousness.

CHAPTER THREE
17
ONLY GOD SAVES
G
od is the only one who can save a person from
sea creatures. Consider the story of Jonah and
the great fish.
18
Matthew 14:28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if
it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
Matthew 14:29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was
come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to
Jesus.
Matthew 14:30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he
was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save
me.
