The rectifier MOD. OM1S50N is a battery charger designed to provide an
output current up to 58A in a 48V nominal voltage system. This rectifier has
designed to be used together with a battery like a DC UPS.
Output DC voltage has the proprieties:
• Is very stable,
• Has a very small noise,
• Is limited at current increasing,
• Has nominal values: 48 V
• Can be connected with polarity + or – at GND.
The rectifier OM1S50N is a switching mode rectifier which realizes the
conversion AC/DC in pulse width modulation (PWM).
The rectifier has some remarkable performances:
• Parallel operating with equal current sharing and automatic disabling
of faulty unit,
• softstart – the input current is increasing in 8 sec at power up,
• the rectifier can be hot plugged up,
• operating control with a microprocessor,
• very good efficiency,
• very high power density.
The rectifier is designed to work with forced air cooling using 2 fans.
All the connections (AC, ground, DC, communications) are on the rear
connector. When a rectifier is put in its position in the rack, connectors
mating (rectifier – backplane) is automatically made. In a standard rack of
19” rectifiers can be put horizontal – 2 in line or vertical – up to 6. This
mechanical arrangement does replacement and installation to be very easy
and can be done by one person. Racks can be stacked connected allowing
operation of up to 225 rectifiers in parallel. The rectifiers are controlled by a
control and supervising unit (MiniCSU). The system can be monitorised and
controlled from distance using the software WinCSU and a modem. The
rectifiers are hot-pluggable. The rectifiers are put in the rack from left to
right and from top to bottom. In this order are the currents read in the
RECTIFIER Menu in MCSU.

In the figures 1, 2, and 3 are shown the functional block diagram, the power
block diagram, the board connections and the internal wiring.
The rectifier has 5 circuit printed boards:
• PMB (power mother board),
• DSCC (digital secondary control card),
• DCCB (dc/dc converter card),
• PFCB (power factor correction board)
• AUXPSU2 (auxiliary power supply).
The rectifier is working in PWM mode.

The AC voltage is applied via an EMI filter to a full bridge 1 phase.


The rectified voltage is increased at 425V with a BOOST converter for
insuring a high (unity) PFC. The 425VDC voltage is reduced at output
voltage of 50V with a single ended DC-DC converter, with high frequency
transformer. The secondary transformer voltage is rectified and filtered.
The rectifier has been designed with a “plug-and-play” philosophy; when a
rectifier module is plugged into a live system the relevant system
parameters are automatically downloaded from the MiniCSU, making
rectifier replacement a completely hands-off operation, other than plugging
it in. The unit is fully hot-pluggable.
The rectifier comprises the following blocks:
• Input EMI filter
• Inrush current limiting circuit
• AC/DC converter
• Boost stage for power factor correction
• DC/DC converter
• Power supply for electronic circuits
• Output EMI filter
• Output voltage filter
• Output voltage control circuits
• Driving signal circuits for power transistors
The main functions of the boards are:

Static Regulation:
Line: better than ± 0.02%;
Load: terminal voltage drops by 0.45V ± 0.03V from zero to full load
(for passive current sharing) for stand alone units, or regulates
to better than ±0.05% for MiniCSU controlled units;
Dynamic Regulation: ± 5% for 10% to 90% to 10% step load change;
± 1% of final value within 1ms of step change;
± 0.1% for a 25% step change in AC input voltage;

Equalise mode:
The SMR will automatically enter and exit equalise mode at user specified
conditions, or can be manually initiated. Under any fault condition the SMR
will default to the float value.

External Digital Voltage Control (EDVC):


The SMR Float and Equalise voltages are digitally controlled over
a limited range to achieve active current sharing between parallel
connected SMRs, for temperature compensation, voltage drop in the DC
bus, and to limit the maximum battery recharging current.
Control digital extern al tensiunii (EDVC):
Rectifier Inhibit: Rectifiers can be inhibited by a signal from a remote
WinCSU terminal, transmitted via the MiniCSU;
Test Function: When the test function is activated on the MiniCSU the
rectifier LEDs are flashed.

3.4. Alarms and Monitoring

Primary power bad: Indicates that the input AC is off, too low or too high,
or that the primary circuit is faulty;

Normal: Status is normal;
Alarm: See Alarm table;
Equalise: SMR is in equalise mode;
Shutdown: SMR is shut down by remote control, or there is an internal
fault in the SMR, such as control loop out of limit or temperature sensor
faulty;
µP fault: Internal micro-controller is faulty.

SMR status monitoring:


MiniCSU and WinCSU monitor status of the SMR:
• Output current;
• Heatsink temperature;
• Software version;
Current:
Monitored on MiniCSU and WinCSU with 0.1A resolution; Analog
measurement accuracy ± 1% at full load;
Voltage:
System voltage normally displayed on MiniCSU alpha-numeric LCD display.
Accuracy ± 0.5%
SMR address: The SMR address is automatically set by a resistor on the
magazine.
SMR alarm monitoring: The Alarm table shows alarm conditions that are
monitored by the SMR and are displayed on both MiniCSU and
WinCSU. The mnemonics listed here appear on WinCSU, but
full alarm description appears on MiniCSU.

Cooling:
Cooling is performed through forced convection using 2 x 60mm fans with
variable speed control, finger guard. On rectifier startup, if a fan is
disconnected it will be detected and the fan alarm software routines
activated. Fans stop if AC power fails or rectifier inhibited remotely. The
fans are mounted internally into the rectifier.

3.8. Connections

Input, Output and Communications:


A multi-purpose connector is mounted on the back of the rectifier module,
fixed on the PMB board, with the following features:
• Supplying AC voltage for the rectifier
• Supplying DC voltage for the loads
• Connecting internal earthing
• Connecting bus communications with MiniCSU
A matching connector is located at the back of the magazine. This
connector is fixed on an electronic board on which is found the identification
resistor for the rectifier number.
The mating of connectors occurs when unit is plugged into the magazine.
