6thSemester (Session-2016), Spring – 2019
Complex Engineering Problem

Subject: Power Transmission and Distribution Due Date: May 24th, 2019

Problem Description
The performance of a 400-kV transmission line (TL) is to be studied with regard to power flow
and compensation. The line may be assumed to be fed from an ‘infinite’ generator (the Grid)
and terminated with a lumped load with fixed real and reactive power. The following system
data applies: -
Transmission Line:
400-kV, 3-ph, 50-Hz, variable TL length in km, R = 0.008 Ohms/km, L = 0.52 mH/km,
C = 0.008 µF/km
Load Data:
400 MVA, 0.75 pf lagging, 50-Hz, 400-kV
Questions:
I. Calculate, the receiving end current, the sending end (power, voltage and current)
using the line models discussed in the lecture notes, consider the load parameters
given above for the following transmission line lengths;
a. 30 km (short line)
b. 400 km (long line)
II. For a 400 km transmission line, critically analyse the role of shunt compensation
with respect to light and heavy loading on transmission line.
