Q2. (a) A slider in a machine moves along a fixed straight rod. Its distance 𝑥cm along the rod is
given below for various values of the time 𝑡second. Find the velocity of the slider and its
acceleration when 𝑡 = 0.2 second (8mks)

(b) If two variables are linearly related, show that 𝜌 = ±1 (9.5mks)

Q3. (a) Write down the regression equation of 𝑥 on 𝑦 and 𝑦 on 𝑥 and prove that correlation
coefficient is the geometric mean of the two regression coefficients. (11mks)
(b) Two regression lines are given by 3𝑋 = 4𝑌 + 9, 1.5𝑌 = 6𝑋 + 7. Determine the variance of
𝑋 and 𝑌 (6.5mks)
Q4. (a) Solve the system of equation by decoupling (12mks)
𝑥 1 = 𝑥 + 4𝑦 − 4𝑡 2 − 3
𝑦1 = 𝑥 + 𝑦 − 𝑡 2 + 2𝑡 − 3, subject to 𝑥(0) = 2, 𝑦(0) = 3.
(b) Establish the identities: (i) ∆∇= ∆ − ∇ (ii ) ∆3 = 𝐸 3 − 3𝐸 2 + 3𝐸 − 1 (7.5mks)
Q5. (a) The manufacturer of a certain make of electric bulbs claims that his bulbs have a mean
life of 25 months with a standard deviation of 5 months. A random sample of 6 such
bulbs gave the following values. Life of months: 24, 26, 30, 20, 20, 18. Can you regard
the producers, claims to be valid at 1% level of significance? (17.5mks)
Q6. The marks obtained in a Statistics in a certain examination is found to be normally distributed.
If 15% of the students ≥ 60 marks, 40% < 30 marks, find the mean, variance and standard
deviation. (17.5mks)
