English Written Task

The book chosen: Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s

Stone

A gist on the book:

The book that i have chosen to write on is the harry potters philosophers
stone. This is a complete fiction book. It contains un natural creatures,
environments and characters. The story is about a magical stone and the
study of ancient alchemy. There are antagonists and protagonists both
present in the story. There are supporters for each of the categories. To
state throughout the book, there are many characters involved. The main
story revolves around the protagonist Harry. There are two antagonists,
Quirrell and Lord Voldemort.

What i am going to do:

Now since we will not be able to cover the whole book, we will be taking the
first chapter of the story. First we will describe the chapter briefly, we will
then analyze different characters present and talk about them. Then we will
discuss about the story, the theme and the possible settings of the story.
Then we will discuss the rhetorical devices that are predominantly used. So
then finally we will review the chapter in terms of the speakers and the
audience. Therefore, this is the plan for this document.

Briefing:
The story starts with a family called the dursleys. Mrs dursley is said to be
the aunt of the protagonists. The story first describes the hatred the
dursleys have toward the potter family. Then without any clue they describe
the un natural things happening around mr dusrley when he is travelling for
work. He is said to witness odd things around him and people whispering
potters. Being paranoid he is thinking only about this and experiences
weird things that had happened. As this had gone in one side, the other
side fictional characters appear and they bring a baby called harry, the
potter’s son. The first one was a cat who turned into a woman and then
albus dumbledore who walks in quick and snaps all the lights out. As he
arrives, conversation arises between them about the potters and what had
happened. It is said the potters were killed by voldemort and only the child
harry was left. Then they continue talking and then they had decided to
leave the child in their aunts house to grow until he was ready to fight
voldemort (villain and who killed harry’s parents). And since they had
decided, they arranged to get the child to the normal world and leave him
on an aunts house. He is said to be carried by a giant .
So this is what happens in the first chapter.

Characters involved:
1. Mrs Dursley: m rs dursley is said to be the wife of mr dursley. She is
said as a tall person and the sister of mrs potter. But they do also mention
that she does not like the potters and are hatred toward them.
2. Mr Dursley: mr dursley is the wife of mrs dursley. He is said to be a tall
man with a moustache. He is also said to be hating the potters and
ashamed of having the potters as their relatives.
3. Dudley: Dudley is the child of mrs and mr dursley. He is said to be
young and a stubborn child through the first chapter.
4. Albus Dumbledore: t his man is said to be a wise and a professor.
There is not much other details given about him. He is said to have along
beard and hair. This man is described very respected across many and is a
product of wiseness and power.
5. Professor McGonagall: At first they describe her to be a cat who can
turn into a woman. She is also a fictional character with fictional qualities
and properties. She is being described keen and sharp on her focus.
6. Hagrid: A
s in the story, he is said to be a gaint. He is first described
carless on jobs and duties. But he is also mentioned as very trustworthy
and caring. He is described huge ( two times taller than a normal human
and way wider than a normal human)
7. Harry: H
arry is the protagonist of the story. But here he is a small child.
He is described of being left by voldemort with only a scar. He is said to
house magical powers and is very capabale.
8. Voldemort: A s in the first chapter we were only able to conclude that
voldemort was a antagonist and was against harry. He is said to be very
powerful and is to be said mysterious because he resided in the darker
world.

Settings:
As far as settings in the chapter goes, we can point out two places: the
office and the street. The office is the place where mr dursley works and
where he had noticed alot of odd things going around. The street is where
other characters such as Hagrid and dumbledore are introduced. The pivet
drive, this is where harry is left to stay in his aunts house. This street is
shown to be dark while the story progresses.

Language and writing:

The language used here is the modern english because the book was
written in only in the 20th century. Common and easily understandable
words are used. Details for characters and settings are appropriate enough
and are clear. Punctuations are used appropriately and help enhance the
sentences.

Overall review:
The 1st Chapter is used as a host to introduce the main sequel of stories
and to carry on the story, The first plot introduced is the hatred of harry’s
aunt toward the potters family and harry himself. The language is easy
enough to understand. The whole book is based only on fiction and magical
qualities. Though it does take in real world elements to make it not too
kiddish and sluggish. There are use of metaphor and similes. The book is
targeting young readers because of how the story seems to continue.
