EIC4 – Test Format and Content

Textbook: English File Intermediate 3e, Units: 6-10

There are TWO major tests in a semester: Midterm Test and Final test. For each major test, the Speaking Paper and the Written Paper are conducted on two separate
dates. Students have 90 minutes for the Midterm and 120 minutes for the Final.

A. Written Paper

The Written Paper contains 5 sections: Listening, Vocabulary, Grammar, Reading and Writing for a total of 80 marks.

This part contains 10 multiple choice questions. Part 2: The audio is played TWICE. The audio is taken from English File

English File Intermediate 3e, workbook. This part contains Part 3: The audio is played TWICE. The audio is taken from another textbook of
10 multiple choice questions. Intermediate (B1) level and it must match a topic and learning outcomes of the
course. This part contains 7 multiple choice questions.

Vocabulary
This section contains a total of 10 multiple choice questions. All the words tested are from the main course book, including Vocabulary Bank.

Grammar This section contains a total of 10 multiple choice questions. All the grammar points tested are from the main course book, including Grammar

Writing Students can choose ONE of the two tasks for their compositions for a maximum score of 20 marks. The two tasks are taken from a list of Writing
(20 marks) Topics that is sent to students before the test date.

B. Speaking Paper

Students can get a maximum score of 20 marks.


It takes each student 4 minutes to make a short talk based on the topic given by the examiner and answer follow-up questions. Students wait at a designated area and
are called to testing rooms by corridor monitors. The student’s performance is scored on the scale of 0 to 20 marks, based on 4 criteria: fluency, vocabulary, grammar
and pronunciation. All speaking tests are recorded for future reference.

*Note: - The Speaking Paper is normally conducted at least 1 day before the Written Paper.
