To Whom It May Concern:

Each semester the Education Undergraduate Society hosts a variety of Professional Development
seminars for the Faculty of Education students. Thanks to our invaluable speakers, these seminars offer
meaningful learning opportunities for aspiring educators. This letter is written to acknowledge
Rayanne Becker who attended the following seminars during the Fall 2019 semester:

“Lessons I Learned in Prison” was presented on October 10, 2019, by Dr. Chris Mattatall. Having
spent 6 years teaching in a maximum-security youth prison, Dr. Mattatall offered heart-wrenching
accounts about teaching the most difficult students imaginable. When he decided to learn what his
students had endured, he found the key to teaching them. This seminar provided deep insights into
the strength it takes to teach and care for students that have survived the worst circumstances.

“Math and Science Gizmos: How to Utilize Online Interactives in the Classroom ” was
presented on October 22, 2019, by Beth Cormier. In this session, Beth offered a virtual tour through
the gizmo’s website. She explained the various ways that online interactive could be used to
enhance lessons, as well as teaching the practical skills necessary for educators. Students were
shown how to set up a virtual classroom as well as the connections to the Alberta program of
studies.

“Great Resources for Building Classroom Connections in PSI” was presented on October 29,
2019, by Dr. Robin Bright, Lucy Johnson, and Carol Young. Having collective experiences
specializing in early education, middle school and high school these presenters offered a wealth of
knowledge on how to create meaningful connections in practicum. They discussed the importance
of giving back to our school communities, including initiatives such as bust-a-backpack. They also
presented the fantastic collection of new “Lion’s Quest” resources available in the curriculum lab,
explaining effective ways to incorporate them into lesson planning.
