SYLLABUS

Course: RELIGIOUS STUDIES 1: FUNDAMENTALS OF THEOLOGY


Units: 3 units
No. of Hours: 54 hours in a semester (3 hours / week for 18 weeks)
Pre-requisite: None

Course Description: RS 1 is the foundational course of the San Agustin Institute of Technology for all students enrolled in the college department. It
introduces freshmen students to the fundamentals of “doing theology” at a college level. This is a three-unit course and it intends to explore and
study the necessary avenues, processes of experiencing the faith in the light of God’s self-loving revelations from the perspective of the Catholic
person, as he/she advances in the knowledge of the faith.

As “faith seeking understanding”, theology examines the rich sources of Catholic faith in the light of reason and in the context of the Church in
the Philippines of today so that the students may arrive at answers to the fundamental questions of meaning and purpose of human life. The course
lays a strong emphasis on the Teachings of the Magisterium as guide and Sacred Scripture being “the soul of theology”.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

Doctrines: Fundamentals of Christian Belief

1. Demonstrate an understanding on Fundamental Theology and faith.


2. Understand Revelation, the Bible, and Jesus Christ as different nuances of the term: “Word of God.”
3. Recognize the value of the Bible in the life of the Church and of individual Christians, especially in encountering the person of Jesus.

Morals: Fundamentals of Christian Living

1. Appreciate the efforts of the Church in preserving through her living tradition and the teachings of Sacred Scripture
2. Cultivate altruistic individuals of faith.
3. Deepen and strengthen the Church Theological virtues of faith, hope and love.
4. Embrace the relationship of faith to the practical exercise of life in society.
Worship: Fundamentals of Christian Community

1. Find out the extent of the Bible’s impact to the lives of the Filipino students.
2. Assimilate the perspective of the poor and the marginalized in their reflection on theological and pastoral issues.
3. Develop pastoral skills, ministry knowledge, and liturgical fluencies.
4. Practice them to read, grasp and define the fundamental tenets of Christian Catholic Faith
5. Research on the Church Teachings focused on Fundamentals of Theology topics.
