From your point of view, state and briefly explain FIVE (5) reasons why the knowledge of Drug Development topic is essential in your study course.
(10 Marks)
When it comes to the medical field, development and progressions in drugs
manufacture is crucial to manage any sort of illness. I’d say that this knowledge would be useful in order to generate a drug that is safer for the human body. By this, I mean having potentially zero or very minimal side effects. By changing the structure of a compound, scientists can give it different properties. For example, they can make it less likely to interact with other chemical pathways in the body, thus reducing the potential for side effects. Next would be to create a drug that has long lasting effect. If this was made possible, then the dosage of the drug to be administered can be reduced which would be more convenient. Studies exploring efficacy, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics help define the doses and concentrations needed to achieve and sustain the desired response. Third reason is to conduct further research in personalized medicine (PM). The approach relies on identifying genetic, epigenomic, and clinical information that allows the breakthroughs in our understanding of how a person's unique genomic portfolio makes them vulnerable to certain diseases. Knowledge of PM facilitates earlier disease detection and detection of early genomic and epigenomic events in disease development, particularly carcinogenesis. This will be useful in figuring out the most suitable drug for the patient. Besides that, this knowledge can be used to create drugs with a lower cost. This could mean creating drugs either in a cost- efficient method or developing generic drugs based off brand drugs. Eventhough the effectiveness of the generic drug is lower, it is still able to treat the disease but not optimally. The final reason would be to ease drug administration into the body. This is due to the fact that each route has specific purposes, advantages, and disadvantages. Therefore, a more convenient route which produces equally effective results to the patient would be better.
