Job Description

Job Title: Urology Support Nurse Grade: Band 5 Post No:

Accountable to: Surgical Matron


Responsible to: Urology Nurse Practitioners
Key Relationships with:- Urology Nursing, Admin and Consultants , Surgical Ward and Outpatient teams, GP
and District Nursing Teams

Job Purpose:

To undertake safe and effective investigations and care in the urology clinic setting and on the in- patient wards
under the direction of the urology nurse practitioners. To be a source of advice and support for patients
undergoing urological investigations, continence support and treatments in the Colchester hospital and its satellite
clinics.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

 To undertake urology nursing clinics for example TWOC and ISC (intermittent self-catheterization) in
Colchester and satellite hospital sites under the direction of the urology nurse practitioners.
 Promote effective specialist urological services whilst acting within the guidelines and protocols of the
urology department.
 Administration of medications (including cytotoxic medications) in line with trust policy and procedures.
 Uses clinical expertise and collaborative working to review urology services and make recommendations
for improvement.
 Develop and support professional relationships within the urology service and with other disciplines,
departments and external agencies.
 Implement appropriate escalation plans to senior clinicians or management team.
 Act as a resource for advice and health education for patients and their families.
 To communicate patient care needs to the wider health care community both verbal and written.
 Adopt different communication strategies, recognising that the complexities this role involves in
communicating with a wide range of individuals and contexts.
 Keep accurate and contemporaneous records in adherence with Trust Policy and Procedures.
 To participate in Trust and Urology audit programmes.
 To provide a environment conducive to education for hospital staff and support the urology nurse
practitioners with a continence promotion and training.
 Participates actively in clinical benchmarking and organisational audit, ensuring the standards of
professional performance are set, monitored and corrective action is taken when necessary in the spirit of
a no blame culture.
 Ensures that patient experience informs practice development.
