Background
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers an area of computer science that focuses on how to create
intelligent computers that think and act like humans. With AI, it is hoped that computers will be
able to reason, learn, and solve problems.
There are many applications of AI such as gaming, natural language processing, expert systems,
image recognition, speech recognition, handwriting recognition, grading and assessment,
robotics, smart agents and chatbots, healthcare, information security, etc.
Machine learning (ML) is an important subset of AI and focuses on the ability of computers to
receive a set of data and learn for themselves, then become better in their learning as they
process more data.
In this assignment, you are expected to develop a basic yet solid understanding of the
fundamental definitions of AI with special focus on ML. Using a detailed example of your
choice, you also need to demonstrate how ML works and how this results in computers being
able to act smartly!

What do you need to do?

In this assignment, you are required to write a short essay about the above. Your essay must
conform to the following specifications. Marks will be deducted for not following instructions.

 Use the provided Word template.

 The essay will have a total of 6-7 pages as follows:
o Cover page: name of course, title of essay, your name, etc.
o Body of essay: 4-5 pages divided into properly titled sections
o References page
 Use the Calibri font type with a font size of 12
 Use single spacing between lines.
 You must cite any reference you use (including web pages) in the References page. Do
not use more than 6 references in total. You must follow the Harvard referencing style.
Grading rubrics and rules
Grading of your submission will be according to the following rubric:

 Using proper, correct English and following all writing instructions including format
[20%]
 Using and properly citing up to 6 references [20%]
 Describing AI with special focus on ML [20%]
 Demonstrating how ML works using a detailed example [40%]
Please submit the assignment before the expiry of the deadline. Delays will result in 10%
penalty per day for up to 3 days only.
Please write in your own words and avoid plagiarism and any form of cheating! I will allow a
Turnitin similarity rate of up to 20% only.

 Any similarity rate between 21% and 30%, will result in 20% penalty.
 Any similarity rate between 31% and 40%, will result in 40% penalty.
 Any similarity rate between 41% and 50%, will result in 60% penalty.
 Anything above 50% will result in a zero grade for the assignment.
