Composite Materials Technology
Time: 3 hrs. Max. Marks: 80

Note: Answer any FIVE full questions, choosing ONE full question from each module.
2. Any revealing of identification, appeal to evaluator and /or equations written eg, 42+8 = 50, will be treated as malpractice.

Module-1
1 a. Define Composite Material. Give a broad classification of composite. (04 Marks)
b. With an example, differentiate between thermosets and thermoplastics composites.
(04 Marks)
c. What is Prepeg? Explain the processing of prepegs along with sketch. (08 Marks)

OR
Important Note : 1. On completing your answers, compulsorily draw diagonal cross lines on the remaining blank pages.

2 a. What is Lamina and Laminate? Explain stress – strain matrix and compliance matrix for :
i) Transversely isotropic material ii) Orthotropic material. (08 Marks)
b. Find the compliance and stiffness matrix for graphite / epoxy lamina. The material
properties are as follows : (08 Marks)
E1 = 181GPa , E2 = E3 = 10.3GPa ;
δ 12 = 0.28 , δ23 = 0.6 , δ13 = 0.27 ;
G12 = 7.17GPa , G23 = 3.0GPa and G31 = 7.00 GPa.

Module-2
3 a. Derive an expression for longitudinal Young’s modulus and transverse Young’s modulus for
a unidirectional lamina using strength of materials approach. State the assumptions to be
made in the approach. (10 Marks)
b. Find the longitudinal elastic modulus of a unidirectional glass/epoxy lamina with a 70% of
fiber volume fraction. Young’s modulus of fiber and matrix are 85 GPa and 3.4 GPa
respectively. Also find the ratio of the load taken by the fibers to that of the composite.
(06 Marks)

OR
4 a. Explain the following :
i) Tsai – Hill failure theory ii) Maximum strain failure theory. (08 Marks)
b. Find the maximum value of S > 0, if a stress of x = 2S , y = -3S and τxy = 4S is applied to a
600 angle lamina of a graphite / epoxy unidirectional lamina. Use maximum stress failure
theory. Use the properties of unidirectional lamina as
( 1T )ult = 1500MPa , ( 1C )ult = 1500 MPa
( T2 )ult = 40 MPa , ( 1C )utl = 246 MPa and (τ12)ult = 68 MPa. (08 Marks)
