The Background
5S is a workplace practice that has its origins in
Japan. It can improve working at factories, offices,
service set-ups like hospitals, hotels, banks, airlines,
transport companies, and government offices.

The name 5S comes from 5 Japanese words that

begin with the letter “S” -- Seiri, Seiton, Seiso,
Seiketsu & Shitsuke.

The meaning of these words are shown in the next

slide.

The Background
While 5S is conceptually old hat, it has caught the fancy
of some progressive Indian Industrial houses only in
recent years. Wherever it has been seriously and
properly adopted, the results have been dramatic, to say
the least. Some excellent examples are Groups like the
Aditya Birla, Tatas, TVS as well as organisations like
Milton Plastics, Sundaram Fasteners, Amar Raja
Batteries, Classic Stripes, ICICI Bank and many others.

Even though 5S started from the Factory Shop Floor, it

has now spread to all manner of organisations. The 5S
Institute has implemented/trained in 5S in organisations
like Banks, Insurance Companies, Hospitals, and also in 2
of the country’s major High Courts.

The Background
5S is the foundational input for all Quality and Lean
Management Initiatives. It will be very helpful for
organisations that are working towards securing Quality
Certifications particularly Certifications like ISO, IMS, TS
16949, TPM and many such others.

The chief advantage of starting one’s quality improvement

journey with 5S is that it is extremely simple to understand
and execute and it involves everyone from the peon to the
President.

However, it is important to invest in proper conceptual

training of all employees in the principles of 5S which will
make for smooth execution and long – term sustenance.

Benefits of 5S Implementation

• Significant freeing of work space for productive work -- in cities where space is extremely
costly, this can mean a significant monetary saving.
• Measurable reduction in search time of documents and other items (A 5S office is expected to
retrieve any document in less than a minute !)
• As a result of the above, much faster response times to Customer Requests.
• Visible and distinctive improvement in House keeping
• Generation of a much "safer" and more "hygienic" working environment
• Significant reduction in loss due to damage and misplacement in storage
• Reduction in consumption of consumables
• Tremendous boost in morale of the workforce and a healthy build-up of "pride“ in one's work-place

• In addition, in case of factories, the following also obtains :

• Significant reduction in throughput time of production and despatch
• Reduction in number and duration of machine breakdowns
• Reduction in material handling damages
• Reduction in product rejections caused by a dirty environment

The Beginning

Since 1999, pratik management productivity systems, a Mumbai –

based management consultancy & training organisation had been
imparting training and implementation assistance in 5S to various
companies, as part of its overall offering of World Class Mfg Practices
encompassing 5S, TPM, JIT, SMED. .
In 2005, it decided to set up a dedicated Institute for this purpose which
would provide training and consultancy inputs in 5S.
Established as the 5S Institute of India, in January 2005, it was not only
the first such Institute in India, it was also the first Institute in the world for
5S Training & Consultancy. Subsequently, it has been re-christened as
The 5S Institute.
The total number of Certified Practitioners has grown to over 1100,
