The King of Kuripang

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom in Lombok named Kuripan. The king of Kuripan was very wise.
He had a very beautiful daughter. Her name was Mandalika.

Many Princes wanted to marry her. To choose one that would be his son-in-law, the king had an arrow
competition. The winner would be Mandalika’s husband.

On the day of competition, those princes shot their arrows. All of them did it perfectly. The king found it
difficult to decide the winner.

Therefore the princes who were the contestant, began to fight and killed each other.Knowing the fact,
Princess Mandalika was too desperate.

She didn’t want anyone to kill each other because of her. So, she decided to go to the sea and plunged
herself into it. She died in the south sea Lombok. The king and the Princes were very sad and guilty.

Until now, one day every year, usually in February or March people go to the south sea. On that day, a
great number of worms come out from the sea. They call these worms “Nyale” they believe that those
Nyale are princess Mandalika’s hair.

Danau Toba
In one village of North Sumatera, there lived a poor farmer named Toba. One day, he went fishing.
Luckily, he got a beautiful goldfish. He carried it home then planned to cook it. When he got home, the
fish turned into a beautiful woman.

The woman told him that she was cursed. She asked Toba to keep it as a secret. Toba agreed it only with
one condition that she would marry him. Then they got married and soon had one child named Samosir.
This boy liked to eat much food.

One day, mother asked Samosir to bring lunch to father. On the way to rice field, he stopped and ate
most of food. After that, he gave the rest of food to his father. Toba was very angry and shouted at
Samosir “You, a fish kid, you are so greedy!” Samosir cried and ran toward his mother. He asked mother
why father called him a fish kid.

The woman was really upset that Toba broke his promise. Mother and son disappeared. Soon there were
springs that caused a vast lake. It’s called Toba Lake. A land in the middle of Toba Lake is called Samosir
Island.
Malin Kundang
Once upon a time, there were mother and her young son, namely Malin Kundang, lived in difficult life.
They hanged life with something given by the nature. They took woods from the forest and sold them to
buy their food. It was not enough to fulfill their daily need normaly. They ate food whatever there was,
they wore clothes whatever there was. They were very poor.

One day, Malin Kundang asked for permission to her mother to work. He want to change their life.
“Mother, let me go to get work, so we can live in better life. I will come back soon” said Malin Kundang.
“Of course, my Dear. May God bless you!” answered his mother.

Malin Kundang went away to try his luck in a big ship. His poor life motivated him to be a good
employee. He was very diligent and made his career increased as fast as possible, until he became a rich
man. The merchant of a big ship interested in him and wanted him to marry his daughter. Malin Kundang
agreed because she was very beautiful.

After Malin Kundang married, one day, his wife invited him to see his mother land. Malin agreed
with her. Their ship anchored near the harbor of West Sumatra. Everybody heard their coming. The
dweller told about it. “ Malin come back! Malin come back! He is a rich man now!” they shouted.

Malin Kundang’s mother came to the harbor and found Malin Kundang with his wife. “ Malin!
Welcome to your village!” said his mother. Malin Kundang ashamed to his wife when he saw his mother
in a bad clothes. He always said to his wife that he was a son of a rich man.

“ I am your mother, Malin. You don’t remember me, do you?” said his mother more.

“ Go away! I have no mother like you!” shouted Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang’s mother was
very sad. She was in believe and un-believe that the man on the ship is his son. She said to God to make
sure about it. “ God if he is not my son, forgive me that I have felt he is my son, but if he is my son, you
are the Justest King”.

In a short time, the sky became dark, the thunder rumbled. No light then after the last thundering
sound. After everything in normal condition, there was a big stone of Malin Kundang and his ship.
Sangkuriang
Long time ago in west java a woman named Dayang Sumbi.She lived alone and she was thirsting for a
husband or a live-friend. One day when quilting,her quilt fell off from her house. Then she prayed to
Gods,”If a man picks up my quilt,he will be my husband.If a woman ,she will be my sister.”Then male dog
picks it up.

For keeping her words,so Dayang Sumbi got married to the dog and called him Tumang.Dayang Sumbi
gave a birt to a baby ,named him sangkuriang ,but never tell him who was his father. One day,
Sangkuriang was hunting with Tumangin forest and he found nothing.He blamed Tumang for the failure
and killed him. When Dayang Sumbi knew that,she hit Sangkuriang’s head with a big spoon and expelled
him.

Many years later,the wandering sangkuriang found a house in the forest ,and an old beautiful woman
was in the house.The woman,Dayang Sumbi ,recognized the adventurer as Sangkuriang.He forced her to
marry him and she told that Sangkuriang had to build a vast boat for honeymoon,just in one night.

In the night, Sangkuriang called his friends,ghosts and forest fairies to help him.Feared the boat to
complete,Dayang Sumbiasked some women in the nearby to help her.So they punched the grains with
grains puncher to make noise which disturbed the ghost and the fairies.

The morning came before they completed the boat.The ghost and the fairies ran away,leaving
Sangkuriang .Engaged,he kicked away the boat to the downside,and turned into a mountain,called
Tangkuban Perahu means the downside boat,which stood in the north Bandung
Lutung Kasarung
Long time ago, there was a king named Prabu Tapa Agung. Prabu Tapa Agung was an old king. He had
two daughters, Purbararang and Purbasari. Prabu Tapa Agung planned to retire as a king. He wanted
Purbasari to replace him as the leader of the kingdom. Hearing this, Purbararang was angry.

Purbararang then set a bad plan with her fiance, Indrajaya. They went to a witch together and asked her
to put a spell on Purbasari. Then they gave her a bowl of drinks and told Purbasari to drink it.Later,
Purbasari had a bad skin. There were black dots all over her body.

Purbasari was very sad. Now she had to stay in the jungle. Everyday she spent her time playing with
some animals there. There was one monkey that always tried to cheer her up. It was not just an ordinary
monkey, he had magical power. And he also could talk with humans. The monkey's name was Lutung
Kasarung. He was actually a God. His name was Sanghyang Gurumina. Lutung Kasarung planned to help
Purbasari. He made a small lake and asked her to take a bath there.

Amazingly, her bad skin was cured. Now she got her beautiful skin back.

After that, she asked Lutung Kasarung to accompany her to go back to the palace. Purbararang was very
shocked. She knew she had to come up with another bad idea. She then said,

The king then measured his daughters' hair. Purbasari had longer hair than Purbarang. But Purbararang
did not give up.

Purbasari was sad. She knew Purbararang's fiance, Indrajaya, was handsome. And she did not have a
fiance yet.

Lutung Kasarung came forward. Purbararang was laughing very hard.

Suddenly, Lutung Kasarung changed into a very a handsome man. He was even more handsome than
Indrajaya. Purbararang and Indrajaya very surprised. Purbasari then became the queen. She forgave
Purbararang and her fiance and let them stay in the palace.
The Crying Stone
In a small village, a girl lives with her mother. The girl is very beautiful. Everyday she puts make-up and
wears her best clothes. She doesn’t like to help her mother work in a field. The girl is very lazy.

One day, the mother asks the girl to accompany her to go to the market to buy some food. At first the girl
refuses, but the mother persuades her by saying they are going to buy new clothes. The girl finally
agrees. But she asks her mother to walk behind her. She doesn’t want to walk side by side with her
mother. Although her mother is very sad, she agrees to walk behind her daughter.

On the way to the market, everybody admires the girl’s beauty. They are also curious. Behind the
beautiful girl, there is an old woman with a simple dress. The girl and her mother look very different!

“Hello, pretty lady. Who is the woman behind you?” asks them.

“She is my servant,” answers the girl.

The mother is very sad, but she doesn’t say anything.

The girl and the mother meet other people. Again they ask who the woman behind the beautiful girl.
Again the girl answers that her mother is her servant. She always says that her mother is her servant
every time they meet people.

At last, the mother cannot hold the pain anymore. She prays to God to punish her daughter. God
answers her prayer. Slowly, the girl’s leg turns into stone. The process continues to the upper part of the
girl’s body. The girl is very panicky.

“Mother, please forgive me!” she cries and ask her mother to forgive her.

But it’s too late. Her whole body finally becomes a big stone. Until now people still can see tears falling
down the stone. People then call it the crying stone or batu menangis.
Candi Prambanan
Roro Jonggrang was a very beautiful princess from a Javanese kingdom, Prambanan Kingdom hundred
years ago. Her famous beauty was known throughout the country, and princes from far and different
land and kingdoms came to propose her. However, her beauty did not make her humble, instead she
grew her arrogance even more. She refused all their proposal, and sometime in harsh as well. Many
returned brokenhearted.

There was a famous prince by that era, Prince Bandung Bondowoso. He was famous by his strength,
power, and good looking. He owned a big kingdom with thousand of soldiers. He too heard of Roro
Jonggrang's amazing beauty that he set up to the kingdom to propose her.

Having heard that Prince Bondowoso was coming to marry her, Roro Jonggang grew worried. She disliked
the idea of getting married, however, she too understood the consequence if she refused the proposal.
She knew that Bondowoso had thousands of soldiers that could attack her kingdom if she disappointed
him. So when Bondowoso arrived and proposed her, she was willing to accept it with one condition.

Bondowoso had to make her 1000 temples in one night time. If he failed, then Roro Jonggrang would not
marry him. Now, Bondowoso was not only strong, he had thousands of men working for him, and not
only men, he owned the power to control the genies as well. He agreed to fulfill Jonggrang's wish and
started to work it immediately. He used his power to call all the genies and asked them to keep on
working until they completed 1000 temples by the time the rooster crowed the next morning.

The genies worked without stop any second. They would only stop by the time the rooster crowed. Soon
hundreds of temples were completed. This made Roro Jonggrang restless. She could not sleep or even
closed her eyes. She tried to think any way to fail Bondowoso. Finally, she got an idea. She cut paper in
the shape of a circle and glued it in front of a candle holder. She lit the candle and carried it to the
chicken coop where the rooster slept. When the rooster saw the candle, it thought that it was almost
dawn and the sun was going to rise soon. The rooster quickly got up and in a second, it crowed.

The working genies heard the rooster and thought that the morning had come. Instantly, they stopped
working and disappeared leaving the undone temples. There were 999 temples that completed. One
more to be built. Bondowoso was disappointed to see this. He was very mad. When he found out that it
was the work of Roro Jonggrang, he came to her and cursed her into a stone.

Until now, we can still see the statue of Princess Roro Jonggrang in one of those temples that
Bondowoso built for her. The temples are now named Prambanan.

Nyi Roro Kidul


Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess named Kadita. Because of her beauty she was called
Dewi Srengenge which mean The beautiful sun. Her father was King Munding Wangi. Although he had a
beautiful daughter he is always unhappy because he always expected to have a son.

The King decided to marry Dewi Mutiara, and he had a son from her. He was very happy. Dewi Mutiara
wanted her son to become a king in the future so she must make sure of it.Dewi Mutiara came to the
king and asked him to send away his daughter. Of course, the king did not agree.

When Dewi Mutiara heard the answer, she smiled and said a sweet thing until the king has not anger
anymore. However, she kept her bad intention deep in her heart.In the morning before the sun raised,
Dewi Mutiara sent her maid to call a black magician. She wanted the black magician to curse Kadita, her
step daughter.

The black magician did the queen ordered; in the night Kadita body has been full with scabies and itch.
When She waked up, she found her body was smell stinky and have a ulcer all over her body. The
beautiful princess cried and did not know what to do.

When The King heard it, he was very sad; he invited many physicians to cure her daughter illness. Day by
the day nobody could cure her daughter. He realized that her daughter illness it was not an ordinary
illness. Someone must have sent a curse or magic spell. His problem became more difficult when the
Queen Dewi Mutiara forced him to send away her daughter.

The king did not want her daughter become a bad rumour in whole country. Finally he must agree to
send her only daughter to leave the country.

The poor princess went alone, she didn't know to where she should go. She almost could not cry
anymore. She had a noble heart. She did not have any bad feeling with her step mother, instead she
always asked the God to accompany her passed her suffer.

Almost seven days and seven nights she has walked until she came to south ocean. She looked at the
ocean. It was so clean and clear, unlike other ocean which have a blue or green colour. She jumped onto
the water and swim. Suddenly when the south ocean water touched her skin there was a miracle
happened. Her ulcer has gone and there was no sign that she has ever had a scabies or itch. Even more
she became more beautiful than before. Not only had that she had a power to command whole of the
south ocean, now she became a fairy called Nyi Roro Kidul or The Queen of South Ocean who lived
forever.

This is the most spectacular legend until now in the modern life. Many people from Indonesia or from
other country have admitted that they have met the beautiful queen wear a traditional dress of Java.
One of the famous beach hotel has made a room specially for Nyi Roro Kidul.

Timun Mas
One day in a little town there live an old lady who named Mbok Rondho. She lived alone, her husband
passed on. She extremely needed to have a youngster. So one day, she met Buto Ijo to ask a youngster.
Buto Ijo gived her cucumber seed. He said if the cucumber seed was planted it will develop to be a big
cucumber. What’s more, in the huge cucumber there was a beautiful child.. Buto Ijo said once more, “I
need to take her when she is 16 years of age!”

Mbok Rondho permitted. She planted the seed before her home. In the following day she discovered a
big cucumber in her yard, and when she opened that cucumber there was a beatyful infant named
Timun Emas. Mbok Rondho was holding the infant and sang “I adore you, you cherish me, we are glad
family, with an incredible huge embrace, and a kiss from me to you, and won’t you say you adore me
too……?”

Timun Emas developed to be a beautiful woman. She was 16 years of age. Oneday her mother said,
“Timun Emas, you must go. Buto Ijo need to take you! Bring this terasi and go rapidly!!”

Timun Emas was exceptionally stunned, “What happend mother? I don’t have the foggiest idea, please
let me know…”. Mbok Rondho clarified her meeting with Buto Ijo, Timun Emas said “alright mother,
don’t stress! I’ll go rapidly!”

In the following day, Timun emas went to the wilderness. Gracious definitely, she remembered to bring
terasi…to conquer……Buto Ijo!! In the wilderness, Buto Ijo looked her. “Timun Emas, Timun Emas! Where
are you?” Timun Emas was extremely terrified. So when Buto Ijo discovered her, she tossed her terasi.
Also, abruptly Buto Ijo sank in a sloppy lake. At long last Buto Ijo passed on there.

Finally, Timun Emas returned to her home and lived bliss with her mother.

Keong Mas
Long time ago there were a couple of husband and wife, they are Prince Raden Putra and Dewi Limaran.
They lived in a palace. Prince Raden Putra's father was the king of the kingdom.

One day, Dewi Limaran was walking around in the palace garden. Suddenly she saw a snail. It was ugly
and disgusting.

"Yuck!" said Dewi Limaran and then she threw it away into a river.

She did not know that the snail was actually an old and powerful witch. She could transform herself into
anything. The witch was angry to Dewi Limaran. The witch put a spell on her and changed her into a
golden snail. The witch then threw it away into the river.

The golden snail was drifting away in the river and got caught into a net. An old woman was fishing and
used her net to catch some fish. She was surprised to see a golden snail in her net. She took it and
brought it home. When the old woman woke up in the morning, she was surprised that the house was in
the good condition. The floor was mopped. And she also had food on the table. She was thinking very
hard.

"Who did this to me? The person is very kind." It happened again and again every morning.

The old woman was very curious. One night she decided to stay up late. She was peeping from her room
to know who cooked for her. Then, she could not believe what she saw. The golden snail she caught in
the river turned into a beautiful woman. The old woman approached her.

"Who are you, young girl?"

"I am Dewi Limaran, Ma'am. A witch cursed me. I can change back as a human only at night," explained
Dewi Limaran.

"The spell can be broken if I hear the melody from the holy gamelan," continued Dewi Limaran.

The old woman then rushed to the palace. She talked to Prince Raden Putra about her wife.

Prince Raden Putra was so happy. He had been looking for his wife everywhere.

He then prayed and meditated. He asked the Gods to give him the holy gamelan. He wanted to break the
witch's spell. After several days praying and meditating, finally Gods granted his wish. He immediately
brought the holy gamelan to the old woman's house. He played it beautifully. And then amazingly the
golden snail turned into the beautiful Dewi Limaran.

The couple was so happy that they could be together again. They also thanked the old woman for her
kindness. As a return, they asked her to stay in the palace.
