Chapter III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research methods used. It will give details of the

development of the research in a step-by-step manner. It includes the research

design, research locale, research respondents and data gathering, research

instrument and statistical treatment.

Research Design

This study employs the quantitative type of research in surveying

regardless of whether there is a significant relationship between the price of

goods before and after the implementation of TRAIN law in the selected area

around General Santos City.

In this study, the researcher chooses this design as it could distinguish the

significant relationship of the implementation of TRAIN law by quantifying and

qualifying the gathered data on the different category of minimum wage earners.

The researchers utilize a self-made questionnaire that has its own corresponding

category which shows the increasing or decreasing rate of prices of goods.

Through this, the researchers will determine whether there is or no significant

relationship between the prices of goods before and after implementing TRAIN

law to be answered by the selected samples of respondents.

Research Locale

The study aims to determine influence of TRAIN Law on Retailed Goods

in General Santos City. The study will be conducted inside the parameter of

General Santos City.

The respondents will be gathered through interview in their work place or

any comfortable places that the respondent will choose to.

The gathering of data is within the malls, convenient stores or sari-sari

stores. The study will be conducted in the academic year 2017-2018.

Research Respondents

The participants of this study will be minimum wage earners that are

working inside the parameters of General Santos City. The researchers will use

purposive sampling to select the participants of the study. Maximum variations, a

type of purposive sampling, will be used by the researchers to provide a diverse

range of cases relevant to minimum wage earners. (Crossman, 2018)

The table above shows the specific requirements needed to be selected

as a respondent to the study. All respondents must be minimum wage earners

who have worked from January 2017 to December 2018. They will be

categorized as job order workers, casual workers, and regular workers.

Research Instrument

The researchers will use a self-made questionnaire which will contain and

determine whether there is or no significant relationship between the prices of

goods before and after implementing TRAIN law to be answered by the selected

samples of respondents.

Longitudinal Survey. The researchers will use this kind of survey in

making their self-made survey questionnaire wherein the main objective of this

type of survey is to provide as snapshot of the rate of increase in prices among

primary household commodities. The researchers will adopt the two forms of

longitudinal survey such as the cohort surveys and trend surveys. This is to trace

the progress of price increase as well as the increase or stability of the wage

acquisition of the minimum wage earners and the trend survey which takes the

repeated samples of different people each time but always use the same core

questions.

Explanator and/or Correlational Survey. The researchers also adopted

this type of survey wherein the researchers would be able to explore causal

relationship between the price increase of the primary household commodities

and the wage acquirement of the minimum wage earners (Niel Mathers, Nick

Fox, Amanda Hunn, 2007).

Data Gathering Procedure

The stated process below will be followed by the researchers to assemble

the necessary data for the study.

First, the researchers will create suitable research instruments and have

them validated by their research advisers. Then, to collect data that shows the

effects of TRAIN Law on retailed goods in General Santos City.

The researchers will utilize the use of self-made survey questionnaire to

the respondents involved in this research which is chosen through purposive

sampling. The questions involved in this questionnaire include questions about

the minimum wages of the respondents and prices of primary household

commodities.

The researchers will personally interview and will facilitate the distribution

of the survey questionnaires and collect the respective data involved. The

gathered data will then be analyzed and be interpreted in a statistical manner.

Statistical Tool

The gathered data will be analyzed using the following statistical methods:

frequency test, percentage test, Chi-Squared Test and Pearson’s correlation

coefficient.

The researcher uses frequency test to determine the most numbered of

choices that the respondents answered in a specific number. The data gathered

20
through frequency test will then be used in determining the percentage of the

most answered choices in the survey questionnaire.

The researcher data gathered through the process of frequency and

percentage test will then be the data that will be used in the Chi- Square Test as

it aims determine the relationships between categorical variables such as the

price increase of primary commodities in different categorical time frame. The

same process will be used in determining the wage acquisition of the minimum

wage earners.

The results in the Chi-Squared Test will then be used as variables in the

application of the Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient. This statistical tool will

determine the relationship of two quantitative, continuous variables, such as the

price increase of primary commodities and the wage acquisition of minimum

wage earners. Together with this is the determination of linearity of the variables

through the scattered plot that will show the graphical presentation of the

significant relationship between the two variables.
