Women all over the world are treated, if we use the words of Aristotle, 'an

inferior type of man'. Long before this, Manu, the ancient Hindu law-giver, used
derogatory remarks to define the status of women in the society. It is so because
it is the world that is controlled and dominated by him. it is often said that
status of women in India suffuerd with the advent of the foreign rule.
The truth is that women all over India have always played a subordinate role.
But the last seventy years have seen tremendous transformation in the status of
women. The status of women in the societ is determined by the quality of
participation by them in verious nation-building activities. In this regard India
presends a unique paradox. While we have the distinction of having women as
President, Prime Minister, chief Ministers, Governors, Juctices, Police Officers,
their status is still inferior. There are a number of women CEOs in corporate
sector of women representative in Infaternation fora. as a matter of fact all women
have not been so lucky to enjoy the fruits of emancipation.
The truth is that last seventy years have witnessed some essential changes in
the status of women in the society. National Commision for Women (1998) was
established as watch dog to protect their rights. The Hindu Code Bill (1956), Hindu
succession Act, The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act (2006), Sexual Harassement of
Women at Workplace Act (2013), Equal Renumeration Act (1976), Medical Termination
of Pregnancy Act (1971), Indian Divorce Act (1969), Dowry Prohibition Act (1961),
Maternity Benefit Act (1961), Special Marriage Act (1954), Muslim Women (Protection
of Right on Marriage) Act, 2019, all these laws have been formulated for theie
empowerment. There are a number of laws to correct gender bias at grass root level.
73rd amendment (1993) to the Constitution has provided the reservation of seats for
women in the Panchayats. Today women empowerment is an important feature in our
plans at every level.
Today's educated and modern women have shed away their inhibitons and fears.
They have shown the world that they are highly equipped to compete in personal and
professional spheres. They are successful both as homemakers as well as
professionals, academicians, bureaucrats and politicians. Indian women have made a
name for themeselves that was considered a male dominated sphere by a society. in
2017, Shubhangi Swaroop made history by becoming the first women to be indued in
Indian navy as a pilot. In 2016, Olympics, all the medals won by Inidan were taken
by women players. Men should realise the power of women and women should also
realise their potential, what they can do for themselves, their family and for
their nation. Women are the building blocks of a nation. In words of Rabindranath
Tagore, "Woman is the builder and moulder of the nation's destiny.
