VEDIC ASTROLOGY AND JAIMINI SCHOLAR | www.brankaastro.com

Namaste!!!

My name is Branka Larsen and that's me, some

years ago (), to the left.

I am a Vedic Astrologer and Jyotish is my passion

for over 16 years now. I was fortunate enough to
initiate my learning in one of the longest Jyotisha traditions in the World – the Sri
Acyutananda Dasa Parampara, stemming from Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Sri Acyutananda
was the head astrologer and he taught 12 students the Jyotish Vidya. Somewhere down the
line this knowledge was given to my Jyotish Guru Pt. Sanjay Rath and later on to little old
me.

Learning from the Tradition is of immeasurable value in absolutely every aspect of it. One of
the very common problems that astrologers face today is a shaky foundation or impossible
quest to memorize the untold number of results pertaining to different planetary horoscope
combinations. Instead, I was taught to learn the principle behind every prediction! This
approach is the key to understanding the ancient Jyotish texts and basically understanding
the horoscope from any angle.

Deciphering the classic Jyotish texts is one of my favorite things to do. Taking shloka (or
sutra) by shloka, translating it to English, to the best of my ability (I am by no means a
Sanskrit scholar!), and then understanding the words of the Rishi’s is like playing with Lego’s
(yes, I have two boys and way too many hours spent on Lego games).

This workbook on the Jyotish classic called Bhrigu Sutra, by Sage Bhrigu, is an example of
how it can be done by you, as a learning technique and as a method to improve your Jyotish
knowledge.

Hope you will benefit from this work, and if you have questions, feel free to reach out on my
FB page Branka Larsen Vedic Astrologer.

Gods speed!

BHRIGU SUTRAM BY
SAGE BHRIGU
Introduction
Sage Bhrigu is said to be the first propounder of astrology. Legend goes that the Sage
foresaw his descendants’ inability to provide a living for themselves. He then compiled a
Samhita of several horoscopes, with their accompanying predictions, to ensure the
livelihood of his descendants and all propounders of Vedic knowledge.

The Bhrigus, or descendants of Sage Bhrigu, took the responsibility of keeping these
compendiums updated as time evolved, ensuring the continued prosperity of the lineage.
Today the original Bhrigu Samhita is contained in palm leaf manuscripts, in select families of
India. Not all those who claim to have these manuscripts are honest, and have sought to
attach themselves unto the fame of the Sage’s work, speaking to the popularity of the
Bhrigu Samhita.

However, the Bhrigu Samhita is not solely a collection of horoscopes and predictions, but
also a compendium of principles to approach and predict the events of a birth chart. This
includes the results of the various Lagna or ascendants, the placements of planets in houses
and signs, the strengths of planets, the divisional charts placements and other aspects of
astrological lore.

The work of this scribe seeks to elaborate on one section of the Samhita, namely the results
of planets in houses, popularly known as the Bhrigu Sutras.

Minor part of the Bhrigu Sutras have been presented in this Workbook, namely, Sun in the
first six houses. This workbook consists of original Sanskrit sutras translated into English,
with a detailed commentary on the first sutra, as a guideline for the study of subsequent
ones.

So let’s start on our journey!!

अथ तन्वादिद्वािशभावस्थथतरदवफलमाह
atha tanvādidvādaśabhāvasthitaraviphalamāha

atha now; tanva part of the body; adi and other; dvādaśabhāva twelve bhavas or houses; sthita
standing, being placed in; ravi Ravi, the Sun; phalam fruit, result; āha command or interjection.

Translation: Here are the fixed results of the twelve houses beginning from the Lagna and
the placement of the Sun therein.

Guest commentary by Visti Larsen:

The following verses are taken from a series of verses or shloka, detailing the results of the
Sun in the twelve houses from the Lagna. The Sage follows the classic practice of mentioning
the results of the planets in the houses, a practice which could only be preceded by the
results of the twelve ascendants. An obvious question arises in that, how does the
ascendant or the sign occupied by the Sun change these given results? The Sage has been
kind enough to point out major differences that may occur in the prediction, should the Sun
be exalted, debilitated or in own sign, thereby assisting us with our understanding of the
Sun’s placement.

The Sage has also assisted us further, by indicating some of the changed results that occur
when the Sun is influenced by other planets, through aspect or conjunction.

Finally, the Sage has been compassionate enough to hint at the difference in results through
the amśa or divisional chart placements that we at this stage associate with the Navāṁśa (D-
9).

|| bhṛgu sūtram ||

However, a master key, secret or clue is required to unearth how the interpretation of the
Sun in any house is designed. It is the ability of the Jyotiṣa tradition to hold the principles in
a condensed and concise form, and carry these on from generation to generation, to help
understand the magnanimous literature that is astrology.

Herein, one of the main principles learned in the tradition, is that the Sun’s placement
affects other houses from it through the four trikoṇa or trinal groups.

 The 1st, 5th and 9th houses are termed Dharmatrikoṇa and from the Sun receive
Uttamaguṇa or highest benefits.
 The 12th, 4th and 8th are termed Mokṣatrikoṇa and receive Madhyamaguṇa or
middle, tending towards good results through some effort or education/study.
 The 11th, 3rd and 7th houses are termed kāmatrikoṇa and achieve Udāsīnaguṇa
causing indifference and a disregard.
 Finally, the 10th, 2nd and 6th houses are termed Arthatrikoṇa and experience
Adhamaguṇa or worst results.

Based on this principle we can confirm the prediction, that the Sun in the Lagna or 1st house
is great for health, as the Lagna affects the vitality and general health of a person, and is
blessed by the Uttamaguṇa of the Sun’s placement there. Conversely, as the 2nd from the
Sun suffers Adhamaguṇa, the eyes as indicated by the 2nd house from the ascendant, is to
suffer disease or ailment. As the second house indicates one’s lineage or Gotra, risk of
childlessness for men, or no marriage for women arises. The 7th house, being the house of
relationships, suffers the Udāsīnaguṇa causing one to be indifferent towards one’s spouse,
and risks having two marriages as a result.

Performing Kumbha or Arka Vivaha pūja is highly advisable to avoid such setbacks.

The 4th house being affected by Madhyamaguṇa gives good education and studies, besides
the 1st house itself being blessed by Uttamaguṇa to give great intellect.

In this way, we need to approach each verse of the Sage to gain a better understanding of
the house placements.

health. Person will be of pitta constitution and will suffer from the disease of the eye. He
will be learned and will imbibe good manners. He will suffer on account of acidic stomach.
He will be foolish and childless. The person with Sun on the Ascendant will have sharp
intelligence, will not speak much and will have habit of wandering away. He will be happy.

In case that Sun is placed in its own or exaltation sign, he will be famous. If such Sun is
aspect by strong planets, the native will become highly learned. In case such Sun is in the
sign of its debilitation, person will be dignified. He will, however, have dislike for knowledge
and will be blind. These ill effects will not be felt in case of the aspects of benefic planets.

If the Sun is placed in Leo in Rashi or Navamsha, person will acquire lordship over some
territory. If the Sun is placed in the sign Cancer, person will be knowledgeable. He will,
however, suffer from the disease of boils in the body. Sun placed in the sign Capricorn will
bring heart disease, whilst in the sign Pieces will give that the person is subservient to his
wife. If the Sun is in the sign Virgo, he will have only daughters. He will be deprived of wife
and will be ungrateful. If such Sun is conjoined benefic planet the person will be devoid of
diseases. Conjoined malefic planets, in inimical sign or debilitated, person will suffer from
fever in his third year. Such unfavourable effects will not be felt in case Sun is aspected by
benefic planets.

Commentary: Brighu rishi starts this brilliant work with Suns placement in lagna (ascendant)
and with that, the first sutra is ārogyaṁ bhavati or one who is without disease, healthy. Sun
is the karaka (significator) for the first house, being the life-giving planet in the universe, and
as such is very much prone to protect the health and life of a person. The ascendant is the
birth of the new life, it is defined as the rising sign at the time of the birth and is a crucial
point in determining the health and longevity of a native (including 8th and 10th house as
well).

pittaprakṛtiḥ netrarogī The Sun is a agni tatva planet, full of light and fire, and as such it will
give strong pitta dosha (pittaprakṛtiḥ) as per Ayurveda or one who has a strong digestive fire
and digestive fire is said to be the main factor in good health. But agni tatva has its burning
qualities as well (story of two wives). That is way it is said that strong presence of Sun on the
ascendant can give receding hair and one who wears eyeglasses, both attributed to the
disbalance of pitta in the body. Acidic stomach comes due to the strong pitta in the body as
well. Depending on the other influences on the Sun this results may vary.

medhāvī sadācārī vā uṣnodaravān Person with the Sun on the ascendant will be intelligent
and of a good conduct. Sun is the satva guna planet (next to Moon and Jupiter) or planet
with good qualities. He is also dharma karaka and as such gives the good conduct and moral
standing. Person is duty-bound and follows the dharma. On the other hand, Sun is the lord
of the fifth house in natural zodiac or Kal Purusha. 5th house is the house of intelligence and
Sun on the ascendant brings those qualities to the native. This is also the reason as to why
Brighu rishi is talking about children, intelligence and stomach in connection to the Sun on
the Lagna.

Brighu rishi is very clear in stating that the strength and beneficence of the Sun will have a
say in tilting those results towards auspicious or inauspicious, hence exalted Sun on the
ascendant can give fame. Exalted graha is akin to Vishnu amsha or the highest state which
means that this is not an ordinary planet on the ascendant but it becomes Rama (the avatar)
or Agni (tatva level) in case Sun is in its own sing, and should be worshiped accordingly.
