HOW TO GET BMW OBD1 CODES

Gathering codes on a BMW made before 1995 is performed using the check engine
light in the instrument cluster. Start by turning the ignition key to the on position
but do not start engine. Press the gas pedal five times to the floor in rapid
succession within five seconds. When the code gathering is activated the check
engine light will flash on and then off, count the blinks. The first set of blinks will
give the first digit of the trouble code, there will be a pause and then it will restart
blinking. This will be the beginning of the next code digit and so on. For example:
twelve flashes followed by fifteen more flashes the code number is 1215. Use the
chart below to define the code. Once repairs are complete clear the codes by
disconnecting the battery for five minutes.

HOW TO GET CHRYSLER CODES

OBD1
LEARN HOW TO GET CODES FROM YOUR OLDER
CHRYSLER, DODGE AND PLYMOUTH.
This guide will show you how to gather trouble code for Chrysler, Dodge and
Plymouth automobiles built before 1996. This computer system is call OBD1.
RETRIEVAL METHOD
1.
To start gathering trouble codes turn the ignition key on off in rapid succession
five times ending the cycle with the key in the on position.
2.
Once this activation has started the check engine light will start to flash. The first
set of check engine light flashes will be the first digit of the two digit code. After
the check engine light pauses for a short time it will start to blink again starting the
second digit identification and completing the code's second number. If additional
trouble codes are stored in the computer the first digit will begin to flash and then
the second digit. For example: check engine light flashes four times pauses and
then flashes three more times the code is 43.

3.
The check engine light will flash five and then five (55) meaning the code
gathering is over. The system will flash 12 if there are no codes stored in the
computer's memory. To clear codes disconnect the negative battery terminal for 30
seconds and reconnect.

Step 2
Ground a test light and insert the probe end into the number 1 terminal.
Step 3
Turn the ignition key to the on position and observe the test light. Long blinks
represent the first position of the code number while the short blinks represent the
second position of the code number. For example; if the light blinks two long
times, then blinks four short times the code number is twenty four. Turn the key off
and then on again to restart the test.

HOW TO GATHER FORD CODES OBD1

Ford vehicles manufactured before 1996 are equipped with the OBD1 diagnostic
system which is unique in the way trouble codes are retrieved. Each Ford car
before 1996 has the data connector in a different place such us under the hood near
the left fender or close to the cowl on the right side. It can be hidden by a cover or
a dead end connector. The connector shape is the same for all Ford OBD1 vehicles.
Ford OBD1 Code Gathering
 A test light is needed
 Located OBD1 Data connector
 Turn key on without starting engine
 Count the number of flashes (2 sets)
 Record and combine digits such as 3 flashed and 4 flashes = 34
 Lookup code definition for repair
LET'S GET STARTED
1. Located the OBD1 data connector usually under the hood on the
left side but it could be on the right near the firewall or battery.
Here is what the connector looks like

2. Insert a test light into the test connector to observe when the key is
turned on, also attach a jumper wire from the connector to the
signal connector along side of the OBD1 port.

3. Turn the key to the on position. This will initiate the code
gathering sequence which be produced in the form of two digits.
Count the first set of flashes on the test light and record it such as
2. The flashing will pause then start again delivering the sound part
of the code such as 5 creating the code 25.

4. Once repairs have been made to clear the codes remove the
negative battery cable for thirty seconds and reconnect.

HOW TO GET GM OBD1 CODES

Article describes diagnostic trouble code definitions for GM manufactured vehicles
made before 1995
Most GM cars (non classic) made before 1995 are equipped with the ODB1
computer operating system. This system is unique to the GM manufactured cars
which include: Buick, Cadillac, Chevy, GMC, Oldsmobile and Pontiac. To start
diagnostic trouble code gathering locate the ALDL (assembly line data link)
connector which is located on the driver’s side lower part of the dash on most
cases. In this connector are two terminals that need to be connected with a wire
jumper. Once the wire is inserted into the connector turn the ignition key to the
"on" position without starting the engine. The check engine light will begin to
flash, count the flashes, this will be the first digit of the two number code, example
for code 14, one flash, pause, then four flashes.
There will be a pause in the check engine light once the first code flashing series
has concluded, the second number flash is about to begin. Once the second set of
flashing has stopped the end of trouble codes is finished. If there is more than one
code stored in the computers memory the first digit of the second code will begin.
If there are no additional trouble codes the light will continue to flash the code 12
which indicates there are no more codes stored. Code 12 is normal to sometimes
flash first two or three times before the actual trouble code is displayed.

HOW TO GET HONDA CODES ODB1
Cars made by Honda between years 1990 and 1995 are equipped with the ODB1
computer operating system. If a check engine light is observed, one or more
diagnostic trouble codes have been stored on the computer's memory. A diagnostic
two terminal blue connector is used to trigger the code display mode which is
located on the passenger's side, under dash, near the lower kick panel. Use a
jumper wire to connect the two electrical terminals together to initiate the code
sequence after the ignition key has been turned to the "ON" position (do not start
engine).
Codes are presented by the number of flashes the check engine lightproduces. The
first digit of the code will be defined by long check engine light blinks followed by
short blinks as the second number. If there are only long blinks the code is single
digit.
For example if the check engine light blinks four long blinks and one short blink
the code is 41. To restart the code gathering sequence turn the ignition key "OFF"
and then "ON" again. To clear codes after the repair has been made, disconnect the
negative battery terminal for thirty seconds and reconnect.

Helpful Information
All Isuzu cars and light truck are equipped with the OBD1 computer system
(before 1996). The system triggers trouble codes once the computer system has
malfunctioned. These codes will present themselves as two digit codes and can be
read at the check engine light which is similar the the GM style of OBD1 code
gathering.

HOW TO GET JEEP CODES OBD1

Step by step guide on how to retrieve trouble codes from Jeep vehicles made
before 1995
Step 1 - Trouble codes are identified by a two digit code. To activate the code
gathering sequence turn the ignition key on and off five times in rapid secession
ending with the key in the "ON" position. This will start the code gathering, by
watching the check engine light and counting the number of times it flashes. The
first set of flashes will be the first digit of the trouble code. There will be a short
pause and then start flashing again, count the number and that will be the second
digit in the trouble code. For example if the first blink number is four and the
second number blink is six the code number is 46.
Step 2 - To restart the code gathering, turn the the ignition key to the off position
and wait 5 minutes and start over. When the code gathering has been completed the
system will flash a number fifty five which means the code display has ended. To
clear codes after the repairs have been performed remove the negative battery cable
and within two minutes and reconnect.

the first number of the two digit trouble code. For example, if the light blinks two
times and then pauses, the first number of the code is 2. After the check engine
light pauses, the start of the second digit generation has begun. For example, if the
second set of blinks equals eight, the trouble code digit will be 8, together with the
first digit the code will be 28. Because one or more codes can be stored in the
computer system allow the code gathering to continue until it repeats.

The OBD1 operating system is the first system adopted to the automobile industry
which marked the beginning of the automotive computer revolution. This system is
able to detect malfunctions in the operating system and store trouble codes in
memory. Once the code or codes are in the memory the retrieval method must be
used for diagnostic repairs. Cars built after 1995 are equipped with the OBD11
system which is more complex.

HOW TO GET MITSUBISHI CODES OBD1

Step by step guide on how to retrieve Mitsubishi OBD1 (1996
and earlier) diagnostic trouble codes.
Difficulty Scale: 2 of 10
Step 1 - To gather troubles codes from the system locate the
diagnostic data 12 port connector which is located under the
dash by the kick panel on the driver's side.

Step 2 - Use an analog style of voltmeter (sweeper arm) set the
voltmeter dial to continuity. Next, insert the positive lead into the
number #1 terminal and the black or ground lead into the #12
terminal. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position and observe
the voltmeter needle sweeping from right to left. The first set of
sweeps will be the first digit of the code followed by a second
set of sweeps which will be the second digit. For example, if the
meter sweeps twice and then pauses and then sweeps four
more times, the code number would be 24.
Step 3 - To re-start code gathering simply turn the ignition key to
the "OFF" position and then turn it back "ON" again. Once the
repairs have been made, clear the codes by removing the
negative battery cable for two minutes and then reconnect.

HOW TO GET NISSAN CODES OBD1

Step by step guide on how to retrieve troubles codes from
Nissan vehicles 1995 and earlier, including code chart.
Begin with the vehicle on level ground, engine off with the
emergency brake set.

Step 1 - To boot the computer in mode four make sure the key is
in the "OFF" position. Next locate the mode switch on the
computer which is either a small toggle or a screw style switch.
The screw style switch is activated by turning the screw one way
then back the other way.
SPONSORED LINKS
Step 2 - Turn the key to the "ON" position without starting the
engine, next flip the switch or turn the screw. The led light will
blink one time for mode one, then two times for mode two, three
times for mode three.
Step 3 - When the lights blink four times this is the mode needed
to display the trouble codes, flip the switch or turn the screw
back. The led light will now blink out the trouble code or codes,
the computer must be in mode four to retrieve the trouble codes.
Step 4 - The first led light will blink the first digit of the code
number, there will be a pause then the remaining led light will
blink out the second digit of the trouble code. For example, if the
first led light blinks one time, and the second led light blinked
two times the code number would be 12. Some Nissan models
are equipped with just one led light in this case the light will
blink the first part of the code pause, then continue with the
second number of the code. Once repairs have been made the
computer codes can be cleared by disconnecting the negative
battery terminal for three minutes and then reconnect it.
Helpful Information
A diagnostic code is helpful when troubleshooting a particular
problem that has occurred. After the trouble code is defined the
problem can be repaired and rechecked. Early Nissan check
engine lights are not used to blink out a trouble code like on
most vehicles but instead use a mode and retrieval method.
Most computers are located behind the glove box, under the
passengers seat or in the center console depending on year and
model and is set up to work in five different modes, the first
three modes of operation are used for the manufacturing and
assembly process, mode four is used for trouble code output
sequence and mode five is used to read oxygen sensor outputs.

HOW TO GET SAAB CODES OBD1

Easy step by step guide on how to retrieve and define Saab OBD1 trouble codes.
Difficulty Scale: 2 of 10
Begin by parking the vehicle on level ground, engine off, with the parking brake
set.

Step 1 - Saab has used the check engine light on the instrument cluster to alert the
driver that the car has encountered a malfunction of the engine or emission
systems. Once activated the check engine light will flash a one or two digit code.
Like most pre ODB11 operating systems the first set of blinks will be the first digit
of the trouble code, there will be a brief pause as the computer gets ready to blink
out the second digit of the trouble code.
Step 2 - To activate this code retrieval mode a switched ground wire must be
connected to the computer pin # 16. This can be done several different ways but
the most common method is locating the diagnostic connector which is near the
right side of the engine.
Step 3 - Once this is completed turn the ignition key to the "ON" position, the
check engine light will flash rapidly two or three times and then pause. The
computer is ready to produce the stored trouble codes.
Step 4 - Turn the grounded lead to the "OFF" position (remove the ground from the
circuit) this will enable the computer to produce the first digit of the trouble code,
pause and then produce the second digit of the trouble code. For example, if the
check engine light flashes twice and then pauses and then blinks three more times,
the code number would be 23. Some codes are a single digit in the case the check
engine light will only blink one set.
Step 5 - To clear trouble codes after the repairs have been made remove the
negative battery cable for two minutes and reconnect or turn the jumper lead to the
"ON" position, after three short blinks of the check engine light turn the switch off
the light will blink 12444. This means there are no more codes stored in the
computer’s memory and the system is reset.
