A guide for migrating from 9810 to TWE

Objective:
This guide will outline the steps needed to setup the Trusted Wireless Ethernet Radio (TWE)
in order to complete simple Serial-to-Serial communication (RS232).

The steps shown below are simplest radio settings needed to configure the TWE radio for
communication in applications where a GE-MDS 9810 radio has been in service. (Not all
functions and settings of the TWE are referenced in the steps that follow. If you have any
questions on other settings, please reference the manual or connect with Phoenix Contact
Technical Service.)

Computer setup for communication with the radios

Set your computer in the 192.168.254.xxx network
Navigate to default IP address, 192.168.254.254 and login to radio via default IP address
• Username: Admin
• Password: admin
Master radio setup:
1. Go to Configuration -> Radio ->Settings
• Set the Radio Mode to Master
• Set a Network ID (this will be the same in every radio in the network)
• Set a Radio ID (this will be a different number for each radio in the network)
• Set the Data Rate to 125 kbps
• Set the Frame size to Latency
• Click Submit
• Click “Apply Radio Settings”
o This button appears after you click Submit
2. Setup for Serial Streaming
Go to Configuration ->I/O Ports -> Serial Ports
• Configure your RS232 settings such as Baud Rate, Data Bits, Parity and Flow
Control
• Set the “Connect to Stream” drop-down menu to “Serial Channel 1”
• Click Submit

3. Setup for over-the-air encryption (optional)

Configuration ->Radio->Security
• Set the Encryption type drop-down menu to Static AES,
• Select your level of encryption, 128, 192 or 256 bit
• Enter your encryption key
o This must match in every radio configuration in your network
• Click Submit
4. Setting the IP address of the radio (Needed for configuration of radio only)
Configuration->LAN->IP Configuration
• Set your IP address to anything you like. All radios in the network must have a
unique IP address
o After you hit the submit key, the IP address will be changed and you may
need to re-adjust your computer’s IPs setting to be in the same network
as the radio in order to communicate again.
Setup for Slave Radios:
Go to Configuration ->Radio->Settings
• Set the Radio Mode to Slave
• Set the Network ID (this will be the same in every radio in the network)
• Set the Radio ID (this will be a different number for each radio in the network)
• Set the Data Rate to 125 kbps
• Set the Frame size to Latency
• Set Roaming to: No
• Enter the Radio ID of the Master Radio in the “Fixed Master” Entry
• Click Submit
• Click “Apply Radio Settings”
o This button appears after you click submit
5. Setup Serial Streaming
Go to Configuration ->I/O Ports -> Serial Ports
• Configure your RS232 settings such as Baud Rate, Data Bits, Parity and Flow
Control
• Set the “Connect to Stream” drop-down menu to “Serial Channel 1”
• Click Submit
6. Setup for over the air encryption (optional)
Configuration ->Radio->Security
• Set the Encryption type drop down to Static AES,
• Select your level of encryption, 128, 192 or 256 bit
• Enter your encryption key
o This must match in every radio configuration in your network
• Click Submit
7. Setup of the IP address of the radio (Needed for configuration of radio only)
Configuration->LAN->IP Configuration
• Set your IP address to anything you like. All radios in the network must have a
unique IP address
NOTE: After hitting Submit, the IP address will be changed. This may require
you to re-adjust your computer’s IP setting in order to be on the same network
as the radio.
