ACTIVITY 7
Verbs in action
This activity uses verbs of one word. Verbs made up of more than one
word are introduced in Snakes and verbs on page 27.
Resources
● Blank paper or whiteboard and pen.
● Card or paper cut to make approximately 12 word cards.
Preparation
● Ask the child to think of a person, e.g. baby, child, dad, mum,
grandparent, and write on whiteboard.
21
● Write other sentences if the child is still unsure.
Verbs in action
● Explain that the verbs are in the past tense – the action has already
happened. Ask the child to look at the verb, e.g. tripped, splashed.
Explain that the verb is in the past tense. Ask how the ending of the
verb is changed to make the verb into an action that is happening.
● He . . . (tripped becomes trips; splashed becomes splashes).
Activity
● Return to the whiteboard and remind the child of the person they
chose at the beginning.
● Ask the child to think of things that person could be doing.
● Write the verbs on the word cards, one word for each card, and
arrange to form a list.
● Then ask the child to name places where the person might be.
● Write the places on cards, one clause for each card, and arrange in
a list to the right of the verbs.
● Ask the child to rearrange the cards to match the action to the place,
e.g. climbs up a hill, splashes in the swimming pool, sulks at the playground.
● Read the clauses with the child.
● Say, Maybe there are other verbs we could use so the verbs and places begin
with the same letter. If we can’t change the verb, perhaps we can change the
place, e.g. climbs up a cliff, sulks at the swings.
● Extend the child’s vocabulary as much as possible.
Extension
● Return to the clauses written previously. Add any more that the
child may think of.
● Rearrange the ideas into a catchy three-line rhythm and add a
fourth line to make a verse.
Pesters to go to the playground
Sulks by the swing
Slips down the tall slide
Trying everything.
22
● Repeat the same process with verbs to walk quickly, softly and angrily.
Walk this way
Activity
● Ask the first child to take the top card off the pile and then look at
the words in the list under the same heading. Ask him to choose a
word and keep it in his head.
● Ask the child to then walk around in the manner of the word he
has chosen.
● Ask the other children: How is (name) walking? Look at the words in
the list we have made under the heading (of how he is walking). Which
word do you think best describes how (name) is walking?
● Once the children have found the verb the player is thinking of,
cross it off the list.
● Repeat, giving each child a turn, or until all the cards have been
used.
Extension
● Ask the children for verbs that mean said.
● Make sure you get a range that covers the different moods people
may be in when they speak: quickly, softly, angrily, loudly.
● Write each word on a card (see table below for ideas).
● Write a list of verbs as before.
24
● Decide on a sentence for the children to say as they perform the
